Excellent introduction to the super bargain faithfull no4 smoothing plane. Yes, it is not a 100 year old Stanley, or a brand new megabucks Veritas, but it’s an affordable - I paid £25 a couple of years ago - and therefore accessible hand tool for the weekend woodworker . Just spend some time setting it up and sharpen the blade. I do own more expensive planes, but this little beauty comes with a lovely padded bag and is great for site work, and not as desirable as the more esoteric brands, making it a lot less likely to be pinched. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.
Thank you for the kind response. My work life have been dragging med away from my hobby. But i hope to be able to make more content soon. And yes for the price its an excellent handplane imo. If anybody else is reading this: Would there be an interest for a more indepth video about the Faithfull no 4?
These planes usually have a very good iron. Hope you don't mind but I have 3 suggestions, first regardless of how flat it seems, always flatten the sole first , it only needs doing once unless you drop the plane . Then flatten the back of the iron, that also only needs doing once. Then learn to sharpen free hand. Throwing away the fiddly guide is the best thing I've ever done and still get my irons razor sharp. Good video and happy wood working.
01:15 you can see it has been used on narrow boards already. Normally the plane with be greasy right out of the bag. But they're great planes for the price. I have the 3,4,5 and 6.
I just received the Faithfull Nr7 (46 euro), it is flat, square . I only sharpened the blade with the technique of Rob Cosman (1000 diamond stone and 16000 glas wetstone) in just 5 minutes. Today i ordered a Nr4 (32 euro) hope this will give the same result (my "Nooitgedacht nr4 is old and i can not get any new blade, at least not for 32 euro)
It is assembled when you receive this plane. If you want more details about sharpening or assembling look for Rob Cosman on you tube he is a master in planing and sharpening
@@bm4159 I do not think he is talking about sharpening but how to actually set the plane up with a sharp iron ready for use. Too many videos focus on the sharpening rather than how to set it up.

What you did not show off camera is probably one of the most important aspects of this video

Did not explain how the assembling and setting works, it stays a guesswork. Too many important things happened while out of camera :(
