Carbon fiber in football boots isn't a new idea. When we've seen it recently, it's been in the form of a soleplate insert, but not too long ago, we used have several options with full carbon fiber soleplates! For 2024, Puma is bringing that option back, but in a way that we have genuinely never seen before!
In today's video we take a closer look at new Puma Ultra 5 Carbon, their latest "speed' boots that are all about responsiveness! Specially, because of it's unique carbon soleplate, it's 32% more responsive than a plastic one. Does this translate to actual performance gains though? We discuss the good, the bad and everything in between, covering every detail that you should know about if these $290 "speed" boots have piqued your interest! Is this the best boot tech of 2024?

Honestly, it's so refreshing seeing a company go this hardcore to create such an aggressive speedboot while other companies are going more conservative. Plus, they just look like speedboots from the future. Makes the new f50 seem normal comparatively
I love speedboats
Depends on the preference though. I personally feel the new F50 still looks better and I prefer a more neutral soleplate that is safe for more than 1 kind of pitch while also being lighter overall.
They look very much like a prototype boot. I’m a fan! I think we can all appreciate Puma taking a dive in the deep end of the pool with the major redesign of the Ultras.
Carbon fiber in football boots or running shoes is not supposed to make you faster. It reduces the energy loss when pushing off "preserving" energy.
That's why it's big in marathon running
Totally true for running shoes, but that’s not quite the implication Puma, or other brands for that matter, have made as it relates to their “speed” boots. While stiff for a football boot, it’s still nowhere near as stiff as you’ll find in high-end carbon plated runners
Who cares it looks cool 😎
Whilst all the hype is around carbon soul distance running shoes where the goal is to preserve energy, most running brands (puma included) make sprinting spikes with carbon souls promising an instant return of energy and as such faster sprints. The hype machine seems to be focused on the former because there is a genuine, noticeable difference in performance over distance that doesn't appear to show up to anywhere near the same degree when applied to sprints.
@@Soccerreviewsforyou correct. a 3mm TPU plate would be stiffer than the CF plate of any boot
carbon fiber in road running shoes function via the stiffness of the plate+the curved forefoot. because the plate is so stiff when you plant your foot there is less energy going into compressing the midsole. more energy is instead transferred into the carbon plate, where the curved forefoot allows for a more efficient stride essentially "rolling" your foot forward. That is simply not the case for cleats because their carbon plate is way too thin and does not have the right curvature to allow the "rolling" mechanic. at under 1mm in thickness they cannot be made to be stiff or they'll simply break.
cant wait to use these on AG 🥰
I think they knocked out f50 by a mile. Very impressive product.
I prefer adi boots over most others, but these look way better than the F50. Want to try them just because of that plate!
So excited about this. I love how they look. To me this and the F50 compare to a Pagani and a Ferrari. The new pumas look fantatic for the boot aficionado, while the F50 have a more general appeal. Don´t think this carbon versions will fly off the shelves, will try to cop when they have a nice discount.
BTW, would be cool to see a channel where you discuss car stuff, something like "Car solutions"
Really want to try these. And i would imagine that these actually do give a perfirmance benefit with a full carbon fiber plate, however incrementally
Colourway reminds me of the Al Rihla match ball for the 2022 World Cup
I understand that generally boots may not make someone significantly faster. But to say that a performance oriented carbon plate does not have any observable performance gain would be false. The difference may not be statistically significant but it may in fact make u faster, all top running shoes have carbon plates and they do in fact make u slightly faster. If your slow your slow. But technically it does make a difference, and not stating that would be unjust scientifically.
The harder the slplate the faster u run, I’m a sprinter n I know
Puma should just patent this sole plate for all their elite boots. It’ll be a major game changer
Could you please let me know which one you would choose out of these: Phantom GX2 Elite vs NB Tekela 4 vs Puma Ultra Carbon vs Adidas F50? Could you also factor in Predators and X Crazyfasts, Mercurials and Mizunos.
Bro, that selection is a buffet of boots, got a particular style of boot you actually like or you just picking on looks?
@@andrewpalmer1873 I want one that is performance wises the best while looks are kind of relevant.
Why are you sleeping on the Mizunos
On feet they look so cool🤩
What's the actual point of all these technologies if they don't have do anything? Yes they feel stiff and are more responsive, but if they aren't actually improving your performance then it's pointless. Either way I'm happy Puma have actually made a proper speedboot. The vapor and F50's are a disappointment for me. I've ordered the MG version of the ultra. A review of that would be great Josh.
Josh, would you say this is the closest thing we've seen to the Superfly 2 or 3s since? I remember those were also designed loosely on a track spike and I loved the way the plate felt
It’s definitely a similar concept, but they ultimately feel way different. Superfly 1, 2 and 3 were pretty terrible boots to actually play in
Could you compare these with the new f50?
I have narrow feet and it seems like half size down is the way to go.
Puma could compete at the market
Josh, I’m always playing on AG. Would they fit there or do you have a similar boot who support AG better?
I would not recommend this stud pattern for use in AG. Nothing really similar to these either, at least when it comes to the stiffness of the soleplate
Josh are you rooting for the Oilers?
Just waiting for the discount from puma
The Ultra 5 Carbon, the weight is surprising, to be honest. You would think that a boot like this would mirror the Puma Ultra BMW SL, in terms of weight. What are Puma saying the point of this boot
It's about the right weight. Not lightweight. That's where you get the materials and components to work together.
3 studs at the heel 🤔
Almost the as much as the Mizuno.
bro can you suggest me a good nike boot im 13 yrs old and im just gonna start my academy so i need a good boot
Just depends on your style of play. Generally speaking the Mercurials are speed boots, wingers, strikers, dynamic players tend to choose these. Tiempo's are control boots, typically associated with midfielders and center backs/defenders, but they changed quite a bit from what they use to be, no more leather like they once were. I don't know too much about the GXs but they seem to be a sweet spot of control and speed. Don't get too fixated on one particular brand tho, find something the works for you and it'll be better for your feet in the long run.
Congrats on starting your academy journey, be open to learning and take it all in. Best of luck! 🤙
These just reminds me of Mizuno Alpha which are better and cheaper 😄
Definitely some similarities with the upper, but the soleplate and stud pattern couldn't be more different.
Are these replacing the current ultra ultimate or is it more of a one off?
I believe this is a replacement given the 5 in the name, but I’m not sure if it will be the only top end Ultra model from Puma. I guess time will tell
Will they be durable tho
I foresee a lot of torn ligaments and tendons in the future of players who use these boots on AG, hell maybe even firm ground 😂
I pray for the fouls who think you should wear these on AG 🙏
The back studs are brutal
@@andrewpalmer1873 they’re all brutal lol
Josh do you think mercurial vapor elite FGs are okay to use on AG/Turf?
not Josh but do this all the time. AG is not too bad but they will be super clingy on shorter turf.
If you’re okay with that feeling and voiding your warranty, they do just fine
They definitely wouldn’t be ideal. That’s an aggressive stud pattern for an artificial surface, both in regards to stud length and shape
Nope, not safe. Footlooseboots did a video on that, check it out.
Anyone remember Pumas 99g boot which only lasted like 10 games?😂😂
Are they light at all?
Anyone know about the durability?
Josh which boot would you pick if they were at the same price, Tiempo 10 Academy or last year Future Pro?
I would personally lean towards the Futures
Thanks, I really appreciate your answer! Keep up the great content, this Ultras look super cool, I’ll wait to see what your thoughts on their takedowns are
they look like the most goofy boots yet 💀
Pity you cant buy em anywhere XD
Puma’s durability is often questionable
What is this
3rd time the charm
Yeah they must be cool and all as a track spike on field, but imagine actually trying to play in these, those studs will NOT manipulate the ball well in a way and they will feel so stiff on feet that it’s probably gonna feel like pure shit and pain to play in for 90 mins. Let’s not even get started on my knees hurting just looking at those studs, no matter what surface your playing on
The stud tips are actually quite grippy on the ball and for how stiff the soleplate feels in hand, it still manages to move with the foot nicely when actually playing in the boots. It’s a stiffer feeling plate for sure, but not in any way that feels uncomfortable. The stud pattern would not ideal for harder ground or AG, but that’s the case with most “speed” boot FG layouts. I can’t stress enough how they feel way more solid than they look like they would be
@@Soccerreviewsforyou interesting, i just like my football boots pretty old school and don’t fall for any of these marketing gimmicks that’s why. I just want something that plays the game well and feels really comfortable, I’ve been wearing 3 pairs of Legend 9s now for the past 3 years and absolutely love them. I’m looking to get something maybe a bit more niche, something like a Mizuno Morelia or Neo non-beta. That’s why I tend to shit on these boots with all sorts of “tech” on them cause idk I think it’s a bit useless, at the end of the day it’s my legs running not my shoes right?
