      Barrys, I remember it now, Barry would do the serving while his missus was in the back frying the eggs and bacon. They knew how to cook bacon as well really crispy, like it should be!!

    Allsorts next to Connells still going amazingly. If you need any adjustments or repairs needed to clothes etc, they are the place to go. Lovely family business.

    It's a shame you didn't fully show the end of Union Street, Blue Sheep Books is an absolute gem and the only thing my husband and I visit Wednesbury for every single week. There's nothing else like it in the town, the owner is lovely, and it's definitely worth a visit! As well as books they sell coffee, wine, cider, cookies, Pokémon cards and products from local craft businesses. They also have book clubs, taster nights, trade nights and other events.

      I regret. not giving them a mention I believe the shop was originally opposite the William Archer on the corner before moving to its current site. The shop is unique as I dont believe any of the Black Country towns has anything like it. Blue Sheep stands as a beacon for proper independent shops in the Town just wish there were more like it.. Many thanks for the comment

    As a 64 year old I enjoyed your walk around Wednesbury and I agree it’s like a lot of market towns all barbers, nail bars and the like. Surprised you didn’t mention Teddy Grays, love it there. By the way the record shop you mentioned was pretty much opposite Teddy Grays and it was called Discosound. I’m not sure when it closed but I remember having guitar lessons there in 1973 upstairs and they also had a lot of instruments and disco equipment in the same room. Record wise I remember buying a David Bowie American import from there in 1973 though a lot of my records were from Gould’s in Great Bridge, also long gone. I remember Austin’s the sports shop, parents bought me a few football shirts from there in late 60s , not forgetting Dubbin for the boots.

      @awalkwithphil  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Great memories I have to confess i bought an awful shell suit from Austins - the shame of it. The record and instrument shop was superb but nothing like it in the town anymore. Many thanks

    65 years ago I left wednesbury at 17 years old. Market Square is still recognisable, anyone remember the rising sun, and sawdust on the floor 😂, the gaumont used to go there Saturday's. Lots more memories, lots forgotten too, thank you for the look around.

    • @awalkwithphil
      @awalkwithphil  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Many thanks Alister, I remember the Rising Sun on the High Bullen. There was a rock group called Medicine Head and the lead singer was born just down the road in Moxley and it was said that there most famous single The Rising Sun was named after this very pub. Appreciate the comment

    • @alisterwest6987
      @alisterwest6987 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      That's something I didn't know about the pub, fun fact, as I was walking past the pub as a school boy, was rather amused at a lady dragging her husband out of the pub, cursing him for being in there, landlord I presume, standing behind him in a apron looking stern 😂😂😂 that's when I noticed the sawdust. 😂

    The church you mentioned was called St John’s , the white building that you referred to was the original school hall. The old police station was in the other side of the church in Holyhead Road.

    Hi Phil Wednesbury looks a bit run down just past webbs and the lamp at the end of that row of shops was Kwik save super market and across the main road I'm not sure around that area I remember Wednesbury Baths and your right Phil that old Church was St Stevens and there was a Vicarage near there and its nice to see the pubs are still open all the best Paul

    Wednesbury is finished now thanks to out of town shopping and the internet. it’s very rare I go to Wednesbury for anything I’d rather go to Blackheath it’s a lot busier. St John’s church was demolished and the bungalows built, the white building was a Quaker meeting house I think
