    I live right next to the inspiration for Amon Sul! Tolkien envisioned Meon Hill as Weathertop. It’s a beautiful hill especially at the top. You can see for miles around and you can see the Malvern Hills from the summit. It’s a great feeling knowing you live by some Tolkien history.

    I think Weathertop was the point where Frodo understood the seriousness of what he was actually in possession of and for the first time the hobbits realized that Strider as they knew him was much more than they realized and hence Aragon was now in their minds though they still did not know his significance.

    • @jimbombadill
      @jimbombadill 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually Sam began to suspect Aragorn after the attack, and Pippin didnt get that Aragorn was "kingly" untill just before meeting Denethor. Its indeed the first time Frodo see the wringwraits unvailed but even then he didnt make the connection to the ringwraiths, that Gandalf had mention to him in the shadow of the past.

      Yeah it's amazing how blade in the clavicle will do that to you. It amazes me how light the other ones took it and frodo at least knew not to have a fire but it was too late the other ones took it a lot more serious after that point. It also shows what a badass strider really is he bought him off by himself.

    Weather top was a centralized defensive position (still is really) that allowed the controller of the tower to have significant warning of impending attack. Being sufficiently warned provided time to prepared and fortify making any attack that much more difficult and that much more expensive for the attacker in terms of men and equipment, while aiding the defender significantly. The fact that it housed a Palantir only enhanced it as a tactical superiority position. Having a tactical and intelligence gathering advantage over an opponent and knowing what they are doing is invaluable to any Commander or Ruler looking to repel an attack, or even to launch one themselves.

    Before I learned the real reason why it's called "Weather"top, I used to imagine that a herald of Arnor would go up there, take a peak at Palantir to survey the lands, and goes "Hmm...Cloudy today in Arnor, but look like it's gonna be quite sunny and warm down there in Gondor." You know, like a Middle Earth 2nd Age version of our today's weather broadcaster. And so, I thought, that's how it got the "Weather" in its name.

    I like to think of it a bit like a rally point and refuge for the Dunedain Rangers of the North. Aragorn is clearly familiar with it and knows it to be a good vantage point, and with its central location it makes sense, obviously they had and used Bree as well. After the war of the ring it was probably used as a base for the Dunedain Rangers, possibly gifted to them in honour of halbarad.

      @robertdendooven7258 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is the exact question I have. A watchtower in the middle of your Kingdom? Why was it built by Elendil in the first place? Also, if the armies of Elendil and Gil-Galad stopped in Rivendell to create armaments, why not just stay in your own lands until just before all the weapons are finished being made? It would have been better if Tolkien had said they stopped at Rivendell to train and send messengers out to all the peoples/races that made up the Last Alliance. I wonder if Tolkien had ever considered giving the War of the Last Alliance more detailed timeline instead of just the very important events. I have always wondered how Anarion held off Sauron for a few years before his Father, Brother, and Gil-Galad showed up?

      @@robertdendooven7258 I've never questioned the presence of a watchtower on Weathertop; it is a strategic position overlooking the Great East Road. The only hint we have about why the chief stone was placed there is that Elendil himself placed it there at the beginning of the kingdom. Logically, HE should have possessed the chief Palantir. But then again, the chief stone for Gondor was in Osgiliath, not Minas Anor/Tirith. Maybe the Lieutenant of Elendil's forces and a garrison were stationed there. It does offer visibility for miles east and west.

    One question has always nagged at me. If it were so simple for a Wraith to turn others into Wraiths by merely poking them with their blade… why aren’t there more of them? After all these millennia there are still just nine.
    No doubt that Frodo is not the first one to be saved from this fate by Elrond. But not all who were wounded by a Wraith would have had such good fortune. Safe to assume many would have been put out of their misery before the change was complete. But not all.
    And it begs the question, why not just have them create an entire army of Wraiths? Send the nine into some hapless village and _poke poke poke poke poke poke_ and just wait. Couple days later, presto… an army of Wraiths!

    I think the important part of Weatherop is the apparent link to the Witch King. I wander if the magic of the area gave him extra strength, because, he had ceased to be mortal long ago. In this world, ghost seem to haunt the place they died in. It is the last memory they had, therefore it lends them strength. Maybe that is why it was the meeting place for the Nine to reclaim the One. What do you think?
