Submarine Startup | USS Silversides Lost Boat Ceremony

During Memorial Day Weekend, people gathered at the USS Silversides WWII Submarine for the Lost Boat Ceremony to honor the sailors who lost their lives over the years. At the end of the ceremony, they startup up the USS Silversides Submarine, which can be seen in this video.

Silversides was tied up at Navy Pier in Chicago around 65 or 70 years ago and was open to the public. I got claustifobia walking through when it was tied up. Not for me in war or peace. Bless those who served.

Machinery: Diesel-electric drive Four 9-cylinder Fairbanks-Morse diesel engines at 1,600-hp each driving General Electric generators and electric motors for 5,400 shaft hp. 252-cell Gould storage battery.

A great tribute. It would be interesting to know the process of the water flowing out of the pipes and how they seal the exhaust on diving. Great work, thanks.

Water is injected to reduce radiant energy from the exhaust piping and to reduce corrosion of the exhaust piping from high temperatures. Each submarine is equipped with one emergency diesel engine. There are valves which seal the exhaust pipes when submerged.

If they waited until the starboard engine reached near full rpm before opening the overboard exhaust valve they might have blown a beautiful smoke ring across the water.
