Whilst the Japanese were ruthless with grandiose displays of honor that were not only a shock to some, but earned the respect of many. I stand with the United States at all times because I once stood as my country's strength and deterrent. However, a warrior no matter what deserves the respect of his enemy. Even more so when it comes to naval engagements.

@Ark Technical He was shot while shooting at a fishing boat. With a heavy artillery gun. From a u-boat. Like it or not, the guy died a funny death. War is already terrible enough, the least you can do is joke about it.
Silversides crew distinguished itself and the boat. The boat is currently a museum, berthed in Muskegon on Lake Michigan. Sank numerous navy and merchant marine Japanese vessels, saved six pilots who parachuted over the water. I've been inside it, and I can't even begin to imagine what a WWII submariner had to deal with. I'll pick infantry any day, and cheerfully so during a war.
Goes to show how technological superiority can be beaten by sheer force of will sometimes. (Yeah, I know, the fishing boat didn’t win, you get the point.) The Japanese spirit to fight on never ceases to amaze me.
I have heard this and other similar stories before. I always wonder why did they get so close to their target. The Captain choose to get too close. Could have sunken them from well beyond their ability to return fire. Oddly the Captain was not Court Marshaled for unnecessarily endangering the ship and crew. But then the US Navy has always had a low regard of enlisted personnel life values.
What do you know? Are you a Navy Vet? Try this. It was the crews first engagement and they were inexperienced and kept missing. The entire engagement is line of sight. Machine gun bullets can travel well over 1000 yards. Engaging an unarmed or lightly armed vessel with a deck gun was SOP back then. No skipper would waste his torpedoes on a liow level target like that. Skippers are out to sink gross tonnage of shipping or valuable military targets.
@@anthonyrosa5006 The 3 inch is accurate to a lot more than a 1000 yards. They could have backed off to 1500 and sunk it. Losing a man to mg fire in that situation was criminal.

I guess it's because the 76. 2mm deck gun was no more accurate than a 7.62mm machine gun considering they were on the waves?
Tapis T hehe
