Johnny wrote the song, its one of the few songs Johnny wrote. Listen to the “Outlaws Prayer” What’s truly upsetting Johnny has not been inducted into the country music hall fame. Johnny and George Jones were best friends. Johnny died broke. George buried his friend in the in the plot George had already purchased for him and his wife. George has a huge grave marker beautiful. Johnnys grave is just a few feet away. The plot is fenced in, has a gate visitors can enter. Now that is what you call a true friend. I had the pleasure of visiting Nashville back in April. They have a bench for you to sit on, I took my guitar and played He Stopped Loving her today for George, and Juke Box Charlie for Johnny.
@@noelco2 yes, Johnny had his problems in life. However, his private life holds no bearing on his public life and his music. When anyone one of us can stand up to announce they've had no issues in life, they they may cast a stone.
He wrote this song when he was going on trial for aggravated assualt for shooting a man in a bar in 1985. This is the original wrote & sung by Paycheck
Donnie Lydell AKA Johnny Paycheck. Johnny actually wrote this song and recorded it first. There's another great song by Johnny called outlaws prayer you should check out Don. It's almost gospel but I think you would really like it
It's tough when you come to the realization that you are in the December of your life.Johnny did in fact write this. He also sang on Daryle's recording of this song. It was the last thing he sang because he died very shortly after. This is tough to listen to when you are 70 and in bad heath.
Now you found the MAN for the right song! Johnny had some great hits, but had a rough time as life passed on. I understand George Jones paid for Johnny’s funeral?
One of my favorite Paycheck songs. You are right about reacting to It earlier with D.S. His cover is good but you can just deal Paycheck’s soul in this.
it's funny because I had not heard this recording. I have usually seen him do it live on different t.v. shows. My sister saw him here in Maine near his end and she said he had an oxygen tank backstage with him and he would use ir right before he came out. Love love love his unique ness.
I clicked on this because the only one I had heard recently was George Strait's version. I had no idea that it was a cover. This just proves that I guess I need to go back and pay attention to more older country. Loved it!
@@mikebarnett9012 He did 2 years out of a 7-10 year sentence. Went to prison in 1989 and was paroled in 1991. He said prison was the best thing that happened to him
Talk about a man opening up his soul in a song. I saw him perform this on an old Country's Family Reunion show. I think they were surprised he sang it. Seems that was one song that he rarely , if ever, performed anymore.
A sad fact about Johnny, is that he died completely broke. He didnt even have enough money to pay for his burial. So his old friend, who actually gave him his start in music, by having Johnny as his bass player, payed for his funeral, burial plot and his monument. That friend was George Jones. He's buried just a few short feet in front of George in Nashville, in the Jones family plot. Being a Tennesseean, Ive visited their graves, and you talk about a humbling presence there. Great reaction Brother.
Very good song, great take on the material sir. Paycheck released this late in his career when he had clearly seen more success than he was going to see again. Little known fact Paycheck had perfect pitch.

I could have swore that you reacted to Daryle Singletary's version of this song when he passed away which would have been 4 years ago, but I cannot find the reaction anymore so not sure if I am misremembering or if it got taken down.
@TheNascarfan999 Good memory, as I reacted to it quite a while ago. About a year ago some videos were taken down by me due to potential copyright issues, and not that I'm fairly sure they've been resolved (they may not have been issues in the first place, TH-cam doesn't tell us), I may be able to reload some of the ones taken down.
Yeah Don, if you listen really close to what he's saying while looking in the mirror, after the second time he looks in the mirror he says there wasn't a nickels worth of difference from the first time, and then say's he and that violin are just alike, and to music they'll both give their lives.
@@RockN2Country good to see you too Don. I was just very busy with moving into my new home & finishing up my job & now I'm retired, finally. Enjoyed seeing you this morning.
that line "we give our all to music and pretty soon we'll give our life" hits harder now that both Johnny and Daryle are gone

An old weathered Johnny Paycheck was actually on the very end of Daryle Singletary's studio recorded version.
9.8 perfect.
Mr. Jones had a ' real' song, called " Wrong's What I Do Best" .
The singers at the end were singing an old gospel song: Precious Memories. Lots of people have recorded it.
You're in good company "idiot" Don. That's why you're one of my favorite people.
Great song. 👍

I always heard he came out with this song just right before he was sent to prison for shooting that guy.

It also makes me a bit sad to think that George Strait is at a time in his life or career that he felt to add this song to his last album.
A very emotional song about dealing with growing old. One of my favorites by Mr. Paycheck, Another good one is "Outlaws' Prayer".
It's not about growing old. He wrote it reflecting on his life after being charged with a shooting in 1985 and waiting for the outcome of the trial.
