We just got a 5 month old puppy. I have to admit, in the past I would have thought, "I guess this dog is the type that gets easily distracted." I'm trying to watch and rewatch several videos a day because principles of positive dog training don't come natural to me. Thanks for all the great information!

My dog is 3 months and I started to walk him, first he was stubborn and was pulling the leash and a just made him some treats and every time he was focusing on something else and I was calling him and made him come to me everytime and sit next to me
After like 3 days I just started to get him off leash and he is now very close to me and comes when I call him. I'm so proud of me and him, having the fact that he is an Akita and they are really hard to train
Maybe this will help you to with your dog

I just got myself a 6 months old puppy (I'm 19) and like you, I also always wanted a dog since a very young age. The reality is, the first 2-3 weeks will be very tough. The puppy will poop and pee all over your house, he will get some separation anxiety and he might also bite everything. In addition, my puppy costed me around 500 USD for the first month, so you gotta save up so money. But at the end, it will all be very very very worth it. Good luck!!

Hey Zak! I love your videos; they have been super helpful for me in training my high-energy, easily distracted small dog!
A question about leash training: I live in a large city and have been working with my dog on listening to me despite the loud sounds of traffic, other dogs, and general city craziness. We have mastered this kind of activity inside the house and in quiet parks with no other dogs around. However, when I use high-value treats to lure my dog into following me and paying attention to me on the street (no dogs, but many sounds and cars), he ends up sitting and waiting for me to reward the sit command. He does pay attention to me, which is great! But this means we end up on really long walks, without really accomplishing the leash skills that I envisioned.
I love that he is excited to sit for me, as I use the sit command frequently to get his attention in the house as well as around distracting food and dogs. I do, however, want to work on walking on the leash! Do you have any advice for distinguishing these two commands for my dog?
For context: He is very adorable and lovable miniature schnauzer mix (of some sort?), but not the brightest. It took many months of training to master sit/stay/come/down/off, and he is still defiant at times on all other commands besides sit.

Hi Zak! Great video as always.
Could you possibly think about doing a training video on dogs around cyclist? I have a well trained border collie who's great off leash, however when he sees a cyclist he either freezes in his path or runs around frantically (which as you can imagine has almost caused multiple accidents). I try my best to avoid popular cycle routes, or grab him before any cyclists come, but this isn't always the case as some of them approach so quickly.

Zak I don't know if you will ever read this but I just adopted an older dog from a shelter and his pervious owner passed away. He is very loving and I would never ask for a different dog but he doesn't play and he is very uninterested in training. I have taught him sit lie down and stay but other than that he just is too stubborn to do. I would love for him to get his energy in playing but don't know the first step in getting him even interested in a toy. Please if you read this, help! Thanks for all you do with teaching the dog owner world about the best ways to train a dog.

Hi Zak, I love you're videos - your techniques have been so helpful in training my new rescue dog, Archie. I have two video requests for you (not sure where else to post):
    1) What do I do if my dog gets in a fight (scuffle...nothing too serious) with another dog? Do you try to break them up? Let them work it out? How to address with other dog's owner? Obviously best to prevent this situation from occurring in the first place, but good to know what to do if it does occur.
    2) How to train my dog to not approach porcupines when he's off leash and potentially out of sight. Again, obviously best to avoid this situation! And potentially that's the only solution??
    Thanks!

My first education in Behavioral Sciences/Psychology, for application with all living creatures was a tremendous help with animal training after I spent many years working with special needs kids who cannot be subjected to adversive techniques - or, as dogs, only learn fear, negative attention getting, etc.
People need not get a university education to try to understand the psychology of the species of pet they choose to train. The key IS to understand the inherent language of your chosen animal.
I have worked primarily with Parrots and Dogs, but the first understanding Man must have is that he is not superior in his intelligence, only different relevant to the species.
I purchased a new puppy at 12 weeks, and began leash training with her immediately. Being SO young, I expect distractions, but we live in a large city where she not only needed to overcome fear of all new things, she also needed to focus her attention on me. To assist, I did not use treats, but instead used specific repetitive words and phrases. "Here we go" Good Girl, Safari!, and as she walked/trotted by my side continued to communicate, "Good girl!". At crossings, a consistent, "Stay" with leash taut, then, "here we go!" to start the walk across the street.
Her positive reinforcement also includes frequent stroking, and my tone of voice was ever enthusiastic, yet very quiet.
Other important commands that are useful for good behavior, we have started in the home. "Sit", "Down"(lay), more of "Stay", and frequent attention using only her name are worked on daily with both words and hand signals.
House training words, again in repetition, Dogs name, in my case, "Safari", once I have attention, then, "go outside for pee-pee?", and once outside when she sniff around, quietly, enthusiastically saying, " Good girl, go pee-pee!", until she does her business, and I repeat the phrase as I reward her.
Dogs are capable of understanding the tone of voice, and cadence/sounds of the specific command. Whether they understand the words specifically, well, as with humans, it's the association that we understand with particular words and sounds, not the words themselves. So, credit your dog with a similar capacity to do so!
I made a habit of getting up each two hours overnight to take her out using the routine described above, and throughout the day, while observing her behavior, in combination with a regular bathroom schedule, helped keep accidents down to a mnimum.
Now, here we are at 15 weeks.
Safari is entirely house trained and in three weeks has had only 6 accidents. At night, she wakes me for outings only when needed, but if she wakes me, I immediately pop the repetitive question, "outside for pee-pee?" and by her response - especially if excited, can tell the difference between needing the outdoors as opposed to needing water ot attention.
Observation on the part of the human is as important as the dogs attention on the human.
Other accomplishments include Safari performing all basic commands with words or hand signals, treats or no treats , new and fun learning exercises, like "dancing", standing on hind legs, "Up", "Rollover", and she can distinguish between several of her favorite toys: Piggy, Chewie, Puzzle, and a couple of others she is still learning.
One important advance is her attention off leash in the park. I have slowly introduced her to new dogs, highly distracting situations with dogs, children, birds, etc. all together, and now have her complete attention 95% of the time.
If you train your dog off leash, and they stray, call their name in a playful enthusiastic way...if you sound firm or angry, your dog will perceive your feelings of annoyance or worry and may not come. Instead, walk/run in the opposite direction while calling them and they will want to follow you. As soon as your dog catches up, give them an enormously loving greeting - and a treat if needed - and your dog learns that coming to you when called is a great thing!!
As mentioned in this video, it's time with your dog, mutual understanding, and patience that will rep the greatest reward!
Remember, your dog is very intelligent and intuitive, and understands when you look upon them with nothing but love!

Hello Zak. Maybe I just haven't found it yet, but I have been watching a lot of your videos and haven't seen one addressing the issue of familiarizing a dog with cars and riding in them. I bring this up because nearly EVERY dog owner will at one point or another have to transport their dog in a vehicle. How do you go about making the experience of riding in the car enjoyable for your canine companion?
    Thanks,

I have a 3 year old Jack Russell named Biba (also my nickname) she is really smart and she's my best friend and we have so much in common (like really) we have much room and we have a big garden so she has plenty of space to run around..... Now she is my best friend since she was born (our 2 dogs had puppies) She had puppies twice but we got her sterilized and she is fully recovered.... But now when I say best friend I really mean we're buddies for life.... She always lays with me and even sleeps in my bed.... She seems to get a lot but she just acts like she doesn't know what I want from her.... She did this before, like when we had puppies they couldn't get up and we helped them on the couch she would pretend that she wasn't able to get up so we would help her.... She doesn't come when I tell her to, she doesn't sit when I say so, and she never listens..... Like when she's inside she pretty much goes where I go but still won't listen.... She does listen to my stepdad but she's kind of scared of him because when she does anything naughty she gets a (soft) slap on her butt (if you get what I mean we don't abuse her don't worry)..... She doesn't do much bad but she just won't listen..... And with the leash no matter where we go she keeps pulling she doesn't even care where we're heading.... I still love her tho....

I also wanted to add that I started using small bits of chicken as special currency. But the smell must be really strong because after awhile she stops paying attention and sniffs all over the place. And then when I bring out the regular doggy treats or dog food, she's not interested.

    Zak,
I want to start off by saying that I love watching your videos. I have used them for instruction training my almost four month old Golden "Zoe"! I have two issues that I hope you can shed light on, how to stop. 1. She loves to chew and rip up grass outside. 2. I have red colored mulch around some landscaping, and she loves to chew on it as well. How can I get to stop both habits?
    Thanks,
    Love your shows!

I really love your videos and find them really helpful. I got a puppy 6 months ago and started watching your videos and now my puppy can do sit, paw, high five and lie down and fetch. But when my puppy is with my other dog he sometimes jumps up and licks his face and ears and I'm wondering how I can teach him to leave my dog alone?

I've watched so many of these! But my pomeranian, Maki never takes treats outside, she's so distracted. I always end up picking her up to walk past distractions. I wonder if I should try using a toy for leash training instead but I don't want her to think it's playtime 🤔

He puts up a leash walking video every month if this technique worked for dogs who need to learn how to walk on a leash he could probably have just put up one.

44prot. Keeping up with Zak is easy. All you have to do is search dog training every week and the sponsored ads show up on top of the results.

44prot, no I didn't think you were suggesting it was difficult. As a matter of fact I do it w/o even trying most of the time. (trust me)

Thank you for great instructional videos. I am interested in how to teach my unnutered male dog not to constantly mark territory when walking. He tries to mark every bush and every corner eventhough he doesn't have a drop of pee. He is a large breed and pulls a lot to mark and sniff.

I would love to be able to train my dogs, but we are having SO much trouble! We have a 13 week old pitbull/blue heeler mix and a 2(ish) year old pitbull / (Mastiff??) mix. The puppy is incredibly energetic which we love, but would like to know how to focus her energy into good things, and the adult dog is incredibly laid back and calm, but is untrained other than potty training. Is there any tips or trick I could use, or a good place I could take them to help me train them?

Hey Zak :) we adopted a 6 year old akita german shepherd cross and I'm after some advice with barking. We've had her around a week and she tends to listen, sit, even outside by the road she will sit, she doesn't pull on the lead etc, many good qualities.
There's 3 of us in the house, one works nights and one works shifts, she tends to bark when she hears someone enter the house or when someone is walking up the stairs, how can we stop her barking at this? I try to get her attention with treats and to sit but she continues to bark

    Hey, Zak.
I've been watching your videos for a while now and I've been trying to train my dog and he's a small dog like that but I have more problems.. I've been trying to do your tips and tricks and to be honest my dog doesn't listen? He's now 9 months and he can't potty train (he will continue to pee in the house), we can't get him on a collar of leash without him fighting (we don't even do it forcefully), he will bite everyone and we don't know how to train him. Any advice? (My dog is a pomsky)
