- This video shows the very FIRST training session teaching Lilly to HEEL!
If your dog/ puppy does not thoroughly understand the Heel position, it is UNFAIR/ INEFFECTIVE to apply corrections for not heeling! This is STEP ONE! If this 'DRILL' is not mastered, we can not move on to the next step!

Happy Training!
For a society of instant gratification, 1-2 months is forever. Almost eternity. 🤣🤣🤣Thanks for keeping it real and sharing.
I’m working towards changing that mentality!!
Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
I would like to see more small dog training if possible. Thank you for the video!
Well done Andy. Yep I've got a 13 week GSD. She's calming down and your tips help. Much better than jerking on a leash and choke chain. Keep up the great work and thanks.
Thank You for the video!
I've seen a ray of hope....finally ❤❤
Thank you so much for this vid
Loving the videos and channel. You've been my go to for working with my 3 month old Mali.
Wish there was more options in my area for getting involved in French ring. You have definitely been an inspiration. Thank you
Thank you!
At last and thank you a video that doesn't start with putting a slip lead or prong collar on to teach heel.
This is such a smart video . Never say Never. This little dog is so cute and your manner of training her is amazing. I like the fact there’s no other way to train a small dog except to bend over. My knees wouldn’t allow me to do the crouching nor will my back. Therefore, you know it, I have larger dogs. Awesome content Andy.
🙏🏼
I’ll do a lot of work on a table.😂 Heeling I teach a stationary head position and then moving one step at a time to stay with left leg to avoid so much eating eating in heel with handler bent over. That’s a lot of luring.😮
“You’re gonna have to bend over” I’m dead lmao just rescued a shorty Jack, legs are a whopping 5 inches long. My back hurts already but this video has me feeling determined !!
I'm over 70 with knee trouble, so what kind of dog did I get? A tiny yorkie, of course. I'm determined to train him and have made much progress on things other than heel. I'm starting heel training, but it's killing my poor old body. I'm so grateful for your video to point me in the right direction. I need all the help I can get.
I have a bad back (and neck and knees and hips and…) and what has helped me a ton is peanut butter on an extendable spoon LOL
Those banners look fantastic? Where did you get them from?
Hey, I realise after watching this I has jump to slip lead far to early! So I am going to teach the heel position and start again. What is that frozen treat you use please? Great video, cant wait for next steps (I have watched Lincoln but keen to see more with Lilly) 🙂
What are your thoughts on a target stick? Especially for people with limited mobility.
Haha! Surviving on ibuprofen and prayers since I inherited a chihuahua/papillion two months ago and have had constant back and knee pain ever since from training him. In a perfect world, we would all have the right breed to suit our needs and abilities but there's no such place. Here's to hoping he learns fast enough that I don't have long term consequences 🤞
I have a couple in my puppy class and they have 2 dogs just like this. 6 Months old!! They are over 70!!
Great videos as always Andy! Do you ever use targets/target sticks in your training? I know it's different to luring but I wonder if it's possible employ these to build a heel for those who can't bend down so much... I've no idea but be fun to try
I’m sure it’s possible!
stupid question: I can do this in the house as well right? Sadly, I cant kneel lol thank you. I have gotten more information from you then most out there!
I looked it up on your training dog store, i don't see the vest for sale.
Please make more small dog content
I will try! 🙌🏻
Do you have a lot of treats in your hand when doing this with a puppy to keep them engaged or is it more about making them work and stay engaged to get however many it is that you have in your hand?
Looking forward to getting going with my 9 week old gsd. Thanks!!
Is there a video for getting your dog prepped for the first step? Mine keeps pausing to look around and waiting even alone in the house or backyard?
Hi Andy! Currently training my new 1 year old jagdterrier I just got. He acts out a lot when meeting other dogs, do you have good experience with using this exercise when meeting other dogs to distract? Great video, thanks!
Hey! No I do not use this for anything having to do with other dogs. This is strictly obedience training 👍🏻
When should I start to introduce pressure from the collar, slip, prong, e-collar or any other tool?
Pressure from slip/ prong when they can do what you see in the video consistently 👍🏻
Would it be right to give the dog the food with a spoon attached to a long stick?
Brandon macmillan has a telescoping treat/lure stick, So you don't have to bend over.
I have not mastered the use of it cuz I don't get many littles,
I’m not a fan but thanks for watching 🙏🏼
Of him or the stick?
I do like you do, was just saying cuz might help someone watching
I much prefer it from hand!
Great content, I've picked up a bunch of awesome stuff from you!
@@thepackbigd Both 😂
I agree though and appreciate the comment, maybe someone out there will benefit from it
🙏🏼🙏🏼
1:03 Advise for most. Those who know, knows. Never train on a full stomach.
Some years ago i was doing this with one of my dogs. Just some training. But i made a mistake. I switchet to the ball too fast. So i went back to the food again and did more training before switching back to the ball. It was like my dog lost focused for a short period of time while i used the ball. So more training it is. And we love it. Another great video. Keep them coming please.
🙏🏼
Thanks Andy. When do you incorporate "heel"?
“Maybe the small dog ain’t for you then”🤣🤣
So what are you using for the lure/dog food in your hand? Is it something the dog just licks on or are you releasing something?
Kibble
What is the best way to transition from heel with the lure to doing it without a lure?
Negative reinforcement 👍🏻
Andy, I rescued a Mal puppy 2 weeks ago. He's now 12-13 weeks. Been watching all your videos and I thank you for your information. He came from a litter of 13 and the shelter that took them in didn't have space for all of them and they were housed together. I've been crate training him but all he does is cry, I've moved his craye5to a quiet room, feed him in crate, etc. I'm really concerned about separation anxiety. I feel bad hearing him cry the whole time he's in there but I'm sticking it out. Any advice on how to help make this easier for him?
Stay the course for many months. Vocalization is perfectly normal. Don’t feel bad, the dog will sense this as weakness 🙏🏼
How's he getting on?
Has he learned to self sooth yet?
@shiva8265 he's great! Took about 2 weeks in the crate before he was ok being in it. Now he's just about a year old and he uses his crate on his own. We don't close the door anymore because I want him to be able get out and stretch when we're gone for more then a few hours. We keep a nanny cam on the crate and most times he goes in and stays until myself or my son get home.
Hey Andy what about using a stick you know the one
Heeling stick?
@@AndyKrueger yes thats the one
Where's the PIG??. Need more PIG training. Great advice as always
Haha! 🙏🏼
And this is why i have a bad back need bigger dogs 😂
It freaks me out that I’ll be talking to someone about something specific in dog training, like today, training a small dog, and you will post a video that day about that topic.
This has happened 2 or 3 times now 😂 very convenient though
Haha!! Yes! 😆🙌🏻
Little dog is capable of very flashy stylized heeling.
Great job Andy. Question. Does it matter if your dog is in the left or right side?
No it doesnt matter, some people do left because when they walk the dog the road is on the right side. For others, the road is on the left so they train the right.
Really hope that one day I may own one Mali puppy from you❤
From me? Sorry I’m not a breeder 🙏🏼
@@AndyKrueger I meant I would love your recommendation…and I really like the way you train your puppy
I know it was not required in this video but I have recently watched several of your videos and have never seen a correction in the form of positive punishment. Do you ever use that quadrant?
100% I use positive punishment. Very necessary 🙏🏼
@@AndyKrueger thanks for the super quick response. Recently discovered your channel and am quite enjoying it.
Once mastered, are we going to get a video for the next steps?
Yes! 🙏🏼
Andy do one on reactive dogs plz
@@samali4327 What about this can’t be done with a reactive dog?
@@AndyKrueger Can't wait! Thank you!
@@AndyKrueger that's a very good point. If I can break his concentration yes it will work but I would love to see a professional do it. I am getting there with a slip lead and distractions.
Just would like to ask you sir how much will i ask a client for a client to teach his dog to heel and how many days do ypu think it would be . Would it be a week and for how much? Thank you..❤
Sorry, not accepting new clients right now 🙏🏼
I will try this. My puppy is pulling a lot and its hard to enjoy a walk.
This might sound like a stupid queation, but for how long each day do i do this?
30 min 👍🏻
it is rare to see a small dog working on heel. thank you. btw, no need to mark and pay at this point?
Why do you train them to your left side? Is there a reason?
Personal preference 👍🏻
Are you not marking it for video sake or is it just a little early?
This was our very first session, ever! I’ll load the markers separately then combine once they’re meaningful 👍🏻
@@AndyKrueger gotcha. Thanks Andy!
Train them to get into the heel position first then start walking, much easier and quicker
This is not a heel, this is drip feeding.
I don’t get why you don’t have way more subscribers, I see dog trainers on social media that have no clue on what they’re doing but with million of subscribers. I really don’t understand. People don’t want to work on training maybe, they want a magic wand!
How do you do this if the dog isn’t food or toy motivated? I’ve searched everywhere for a solution
The dog is extremely over fed. Huge diet
@@AndyKrueger nope she is fed half of a 1/4 scoop of dry kibble and 1 small packet of wet food based off of her weight - and this food… I completely trust. Not to mention she is fed once a day.
@@MirandaBown2011 She is.
@@AndyKrueger nope.
@@MirandaBown2011 Haha ok. It’s a big mystery then.
If you have a small dog, and you cannot bend over constantly or walk on your knees-“then maybe this trainer’s method is not for you!” This guy needs to gain some more skills with small dogs, since many older owners have small dogs and they cannot constantly bend over or walk on their knees.
I'm old & arthritic, you wouldn't happen to know of any training videos that might be more beneficial?
You can teach heeling by rewarding with play time. Bozo.
As odd as it may be and feel, would walking on your knees be okay? Let’s put the comfort aside.
Sure!
Can you make a video on what to do if your dog won’t eat out of your hands?
