This video explains in great detail why I think that judging the stories of the MGS games individually is a bad idea...they all came from the same mind and they're all meant to be looked at and reflected upoin as a collective.
But you see, given nowadays, it is clearly that it is more of a collective rather than a singular mind. We also know that this collective is what made the series into a solid thread. If it were for Kojima alone, the Series may have turned out rather differently. And not in a good way I dare say. Kojima is not as a visionary as we would like to think he is.
@@cobra8888 Nobody ever said these games are soley from Kojima's mind, he himself said that he had help from others, but even those others went out of their way to say that he is a genius and a visionary and they said that he always gave people the chance to share their ideas with him (Yoji Shinkawa for example, said that Kojima trusted him on character designs and rarely asked for changes). So to say that "he's not the visionary that we think he is" is not accurate...a visionary doesn't just push their own ideas, but rather they have the intelligence to let others influence their works and take the best elements of that influence.
@@Miyakolover I understand that. But given some of his choices and if it weren’t for the team around him, the series would have came out vastly different. So example, what purpose does it serve having Otacon and Snake be executed by firing squad at the end? That would have been canon if it weren’t for his team meddling.
@cobra8888 It was meant to mirror the unjust execution of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, but just because some people didn't like it it doesn't mean that killing Snake and Otacon off is bad from a narrative standpoint. I'd still give him credit for listening to his team personally, I don't know why you overplay that having people on his team giving their opinions saved the series from ruin. EVERY dev effort is a group effort, it just that Kojima had the most influence on the success of the series.
@@Miyakolover If that was the case then they would have proved that ending not canned it. Look, if we were talking about the general appeal and all the initiative the series created, then you and I and everyone else will give credit to him as a genius. I owe it to him cause this is my favorite series. It is just that when one digs deeper into the themes of the games, then it is obviously either a) it is one reading too much into it or b) taking away credit from others. Like I don’t think MGSV is how he intended it to be as the video suggested. Sure one can believe that, but not Kojima’s intentions.
Metal Gear has always been my favorite series. From the almost comedic characters and interactions to the deep meaning. This was masterfully done and really put new things into perspective
This was good bro thanks for the video. As an MGS fan all these years its good to see other perspective on the game that I love. Thanks. Appreciate the work.
This was a really smart and interesting video essay. As someone who never played a game in the series it definitely made me interested. If the video is missing anything it's a larger framing device. Maybe a cold open about a different piece of media that ties in thematically to drive home a larger point. Still , I appreciate the dive into scripted long form video.
Incredible video. The talk about filling voids reminds me of something from the tao. We all contain a void. A cup is 90 percent empty space, if it weren't it wouldn't function as a cup. A room is 90 percent empty space, otherwise it wouldn't function as a room. The void we feel is the space we require to function as vessels.
I don't know if you intended this piece to be inspiring but this was, by far, THE most sensational essay I've ever watched. It was superbly written and unlocked a lot of knowledge that was input into this. There were motifs between 4 and 5 that I didn't even know existed. The recent MGS boom on TH-cam has been a blessing and this is definitely one of them. Thank you for this. :D
Big Bosses curse seems to be revolving around the idea of Kleos. Only 11 minutes into the video right now, but I'm starting to relate it to the stories in The Iliad.
You know why this is one of the best franchises of all time? Because you can spend this long thinking so deeply about its themes and writing… and never mention that there’s one time you have to fight an assassin who fights by shooting bees at you.
Lol! Or a guy who thinks he's a spider. The bees represent stinging insults and memories and The Pain represents the constant nagging pain of the subconscious in the cave of our mind and sometimes you just have to dive down and keep submerged to sneak up behind it and smoke it out... Or something. Lol.
A nice video, from which even a hardcore fan like me learned some new tidbits. Interesting way to tie the content and themes of the games to Kojima's life. There are some factual errors however: Psycho Mantis killed his father. His mother died in childbirth, which is tied to the murder of his father, who blamed and hated his son for the death of his wife. Also for the Beasts in Metal Gear Solid 4 the cause of their PTSD isn't the death of their parents alone but a more complex background. For two of them their parents dying isn't even known, as it isn't touched upon. And another thing is just my personal opinion: I think the echoing effect on some of the narration & ingame dialogue is overdone a bit. I get that it's to give things more emotional weight but imo it does the opposite. Especially in this quantity. But just my two cents!
Man this was amazing. The last 3 minutes triggered my trauma response 😢. This was so heart felt. Thank you for writing this. We are so fond of Kojima in ways we never knew and this video made us realize we were just like him all along. Suffering in darkness waiting to be released one day.

Kojima: "So anyway, I'll make tactical espionage action game once more. Until then, here's Norman Reedus with his fetus."
This was good bro thanks for the video. As an MGS fan all these years its good to see other perspective on the game that I love. Thanks. Appreciate the work.
Dude, thanks for the work, this was really amazing!!!!
This was excellent, those audio transitions are brilliant
Absolutely amazing video. One of the best I’ve watched about Metal Gear. Thank you for this
Incredible video.
What about Peace Walker?
watched it twice and cried both times. well done. beautiful video!
And still, some guys have the balls to come up and say "Kojima didn't write the story, it was done by his staff while he stole the credit". 🙏
Big Bosses curse seems to be revolving around the idea of Kleos. Only 11 minutes into the video right now, but I'm starting to relate it to the stories in The Iliad.
That was phenomenal through and through, great job all around!
What a doc! Awesome work y'all!
Lol.
Sublime! Thank you for this beautiful work! ❤
I can't wait! I've been looking forward to this since the first moment it was announced.
Wasnt expecting much going in, but this was a fascinating exploration of Kojima!
Why doesn’t this video have millions of views? It’s the best video I’ve ever seen on TH-cam.
*Standing ovation*
Incredible work. Thank you!
This is one of those documentaries that's so well made you could show it to your non-gamer parents or spouse during movie night.
Fascinating! Thank you for creating this excellent documentary!
Man this was amazing. The last 3 minutes triggered my trauma response 😢. This was so heart felt. Thank you for writing this. We are so fond of Kojima in ways we never knew and this video made us realize we were just like him all along. Suffering in darkness waiting to be released one day.
Beautyfully crafted Video. There's so much in this Video about H. Kojima i didn't knew, besides consuming Almost every bit of MGS and Kojima related Stuff.
Thank you for this and please keep Up the Work.
This is the high quality that Second Wind needs, thank you for the work!
We’ve reached a point where it’s rare someone can do a long deep dive into this series and have it be completely new and fresh, and you’ve managed to do just that! Sensational video, thank you for this 💚
I am giggling and kicking my feet and smiling brightly! What a delightful video!
This was amazing to watch, I cried a bit by the end if I’m honest :,) You did an amazing job with this ❤❤❤
