I still dont understand the hatred towards big boss, what did people expected him to do, i still think kojima couldnt get over his father death, its sad to see that big boss being a salladin level hero at the game, my father is also a ex soldier until he was arrested illegally in his country, I wont say every battle he went through was heroic but absoulutly not this "evil" either, kojima is a genious but i still think some of his ideology is really unrealistic and shadowed by his father death, this is just a bad revenge taken from his father for passing away and being absent, i want to finish the video but it still pisses me off, some of the things big boss did was wrong but today at our world people would loved him, look at the wars today nobody has to make war we allready have wildest ones happening every 20-30 year, the same boss at peace walker would be called hero today
This is absolutley sensational work. MGS is my favourite series in any kind of media, I literally said "wow" as the credits rolled. You absolutely nailed this, and should be very proud of the final product, Javed! Thank you for this.
I’ve listened to so many metal gear breakdowns over the years and this is by far the best one, and the first time I’ve heard about how his personal life influenced the games. Awesome work and I hope to see more!
The sheer amount of nuance packed into these games is amazing when paired with their lack of subtlety. It's breathtaking, honestly. Thanks for covering this.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I want to express to you my deepest gratitude, but i don't even find the right words to do so. This is the most beautiful, complex, well-narrated and complete documentary about Metal Gear Saga's message and Hideo's vision, topped with great visuals and a sensational choice of music. Chapeau and, once again, thank you my friend.
If there's something I've learned about how Japanese game developers convey story in their games, it's that they imply a heavy amount of subtext within the themes of the narrative.
Javed, this honestly moved me to tears more than once. As someone who's felt the shadow of his father over him since he passed over 30 years ago and someone who recently lost his mother, and is finally on his own first the first time, and also now technically an orphan, some of these themes absolutely crushed me. Your insight and ability to tie together all these elements from the series just resonated so well. This was phenomenal work and presentation from you and all connected with this video. Thank you.
I find it interesting that Kojima's troubled relationship with his father brought about many kf the themes of metal gear the same game series that me and my father bond over despite the family troubles we've had.
One of my earliest memories is my Dad playing Metal Gear, which he then used to teach me how to play games. We'd joke that I was so similar to him in nature and appearance that I was his clone. Up until the series ended, each installment was an event that my Father and I would use to discuss our experiences with it. Much like Big Boss and Zero, we both interpreted what The Boss, and in turn, Kojima, was trying to relay in different ways. By moving on to something like Death Stranding, I like to think that Kojima has realized that in his void, he has created a media that brings people together. Even Father and Son. And though that hole he tried to fill came from loss, he has inadvertently given life to a community, his own Outer Heaven.
Thank you, this was beautiful and I can see why so many people love this series. I have never played the games, but I have hear lines, ideas and discussion of theme from them. It will always have a modern sega with a message, that I don't know if any other creator could equal, but it does inspire.
Well, I just finished and can definitely say this was a great start into hopefully more longform content on this channel. Well produced and narrated, interesting info and theories, I enjoyed the whole thing immensely and I'm not even much of a Kojima fan. Great work!
This was awesome. I'm kinda proud i picked up on some themes as I played the games but there was so much more behind it all and that they all reflect Kojima's own journey is a great piece of information to tie it all together and give a whole new perspective. I teared up again at 4's climax in Haven with Snake in the hallway as it was describing breaking out. Really hit close and then giving me a new appreciation for V because playing it, it did feel so empty and it was hard to pin down why but this really gave such a great explanation and orientation of how it fit in with the overal narrative of the MGS world and Kojima's world. Really great work, this was amazing!
What an incredible analysis on information that feels very new to us fans who don't have access to the Japanese novelizations/documentaries. I would have never guessed that Kojima was reflecting on his parental trauma in such a way. Fantastic work - this should be shared with him.
Wow...I really appreciated the focus on the themes as opposed to the insane lore. I actually didn't know that the ending of MGS:V was ever completed, but that way it ended makes perfect sense for the series. Fantastic video.
Wow... this was very high quality, well researched and well presented documentary. I hope it pays out all the effort you've put into it! This should be played at national TV channels within education/culture categories :)
Man this was an amazing reflection on such a great series, and the creative motivations behind it. Thank you so much for your hard work and for sharing this
Incredible work as always by Javed. Writing, art, editing and narration absolutely top tier. A fantastic and thoughtful exploration of MGS and its creator.
A nice video, from which even a hardcore fan like me learned some new tidbits. Interesting way to tie the content and themes of the games to Kojima's life. There are some factual errors however: Psycho Mantis killed his father. His mother died in childbirth, which is tied to the murder of his father, who blamed and hated his son for the death of his wife. Also for the Beasts in Metal Gear Solid 4 the cause of their PTSD isn't the death of their parents alone but a more complex background. For two of them their parents dying isn't even known, as it isn't touched upon. And another thing is just my personal opinion: I think the echoing effect on some of the narration & ingame dialogue is overdone a bit. I get that it's to give things more emotional weight but imo it does the opposite. Especially in this quantity. But just my two cents!
Metal Gear has always been my favorite series. From the almost comedic characters and interactions to the deep meaning. This was masterfully done and really put new things into perspective
This makes me wish I paid way more attention to the story of the games I played when I was younger. I never put together the patricide themes between the games.
This video explains in great detail why I think that judging the stories of the MGS games individually is a bad idea...they all came from the same mind and they're all meant to be looked at and reflected upoin as a collective.
you know, i never expected it to end this way. i always thought that the void will remain empty, and so now i get validation why... soo thanks so much for that analysis, it was very useful and it helped me see i have taken the right way
GB, I found you with the God of War video on your own channel, hope you keep this up you are my favorite Videogame Essayist. Another masterpiece here. Please do one for Ragnarok, your original opened up the story of the first one so much it changed how I view the game completely.
i feel that no mention of konami's abuse/exploitation of kojima does this analysis damage.... the desicions konami made towards him are also valid towards how he made games the way he made them.
An insightful video about the series my father and I loved to play together and share. I wish he was here to see this as it could give much more insight then I ever could since I started with MGS 4 as a child an a lot of the themes and elements of the story went over my head
Beautyfully crafted Video. There's so much in this Video about H. Kojima i didn't knew, besides consuming Almost every bit of MGS and Kojima related Stuff. Thank you for this and please keep Up the Work.
What a beautiful documentary, absolutely amazing! When it comes to mgs content i've seen it all and still every second of it was worth watching and I learned a lot. Thank you!
The reasoning for Liquid in MGS is spot on, since a lot of people really believed that the great wars would be a memory of the past when the Soviet Union fell. The story of the first MGS is pretty reasonable, all in all.
I really hope the algorithm favours this like it does with Good Blood's other work. Good idea editing the title to including his name. I really hope viewership picks up.
Big Bosses curse seems to be revolving around the idea of Kleos. Only 11 minutes into the video right now, but I'm starting to relate it to the stories in The Iliad.
2:34 Haven't finished the video yet but had to comment. I was just talking to someone about this. That every one of Kojima's projects features a different form of either familicide or conflict within a family. Even P.T.(which is possibly the darkest example of this). This combined with the fact that he rarely(if ever) mentions his family, immediate or otherwise, always led me to believe there's something that happened in his childhood that may have impacted him. I remember their being a rumor back in the day his dad was possibly connected to the Yakuza.

@@cameronmiller7978 Agreed, 100%. A review of the whole mainline franchise where it ends on an inspiring, yet nuanced note, was a pleasant surprise.
It fascinates me how Kojimas's work continues to be incredibly on the nose and also obfuscated at the same time
Absolutely phenomenal. Javed's voice and vision are gifts to us all. SO good and so well done.
Hope you’re doing well!
So much of this SAILED over my head as a teenager. I really should go back and replay them...
@KingBubblesV replaying these games with a critical eye as an adult is quite an experience. Especially MGS2 for me.
The sheer amount of nuance packed into these games is amazing when paired with their lack of subtlety. It's breathtaking, honestly. Thanks for covering this.

This was incredible. It might be the best thing Second Wind or the old site has ever done, and possibly ever will do in the future.
If there's something I've learned about how Japanese game developers convey story in their games, it's that they imply a heavy amount of subtext within the themes of the narrative.
men will literally develop a multi-billion dollar franchise Instead of Going to Therapy
He needed those billions to afford therapy xd
Obviously.
I eat the cotton candy from my walls
Honestly I wonder if he just hasn't said publically if he did go to therapy.
Just like how certain people will make cartoons as therapy

This is great content. Second Wind is really blossoming as a channel

I've watched the old Ocarina and God of War videos multiple times so it was a treat to see another fantastic piece from you.
Amazing video.
And I'm not crying, you are!
I really hope Hideo gets to see this & its translated for him as this isn't just an incredible documentary, its a work of art.

This small documentary was a work of art.
Holy crap, I must see what other stuff you have also made
Great job on the research and script, taking even small projects as Bokura no Taiyou into account on Kojima's overarching motifs. Kudos! ✌🏼
This was a pleasure to watch! Thank you for making this video!

But where does Metal Gear Survive fit into all of this?
@@HotNSpicyProduction the garbage
@@ThumpingThromnambular I second this motion.
Survive is what happened when the father went out for a pack of smokes, but don't worry I'm sure he'll be right back....
Metal Gear Survive : The search for more money
I like to think its a videogame in the Metal Gear world
Wow... this was very high quality, well researched and well presented documentary. I hope it pays out all the effort you've put into it! This should be played at national TV channels within education/culture categories :)
Yall need to find other ways to promote/market this, this is insanely high quality
Thank you so much for this video man, I'm definitely rewatching this later on.
Man this was an amazing reflection on such a great series, and the creative motivations behind it. Thank you so much for your hard work and for sharing this
This gonna go crazy, already know it. Anything Good Blood is a must-watch.
What an incredible piece, I enjoyed this long-form video immensely! We need more game journalism like this.

This is INSANE production value holy shit Javed you knocked it out of the fucking park
Magnificent long form Content. Really enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing.
The echo effects were a bit much, but this was a great listen.
agree
If you haven't seen Javed's videos on Zelda, you should really check those out as well. The guy just does quality work.
happen to have an link? i cannot find his vids
Fascinating! Thank you for creating this excellent documentary!
I always enjoy looking at a creator's past to further understand their works. It adds another layer of depth that is often ignored.

amazing video, didn't expect any less from goodblood
Just like Mr.Kojima's works, this too is a work of art.
Just commenting for algorithm right now will watch at dinner time with a full meal
This is such a fresh take on MG, great work
I can't wait! I've been looking forward to this since the first moment it was announced.
