As you said, Mario was originally just an expy for Popeye, but there's plenty of other Smash characters with seemingly trivial origins - Diddy Kong pops to mind, created just to be a way of having a life bar without an intrusive HUD, yet he's a Nintendo icon and has two beloved starring roles to his name. "Waluigi would make no money" is just... have you seen how popular those Waluigi song parodies are? they have views in the multi-millions - and something people tend to forget is that - keep in mind I'm not defending the "vocal minority/silent majority" line of thinking at all, I'm in the camp that if it's a vocal minority they're more devoted and as such would be more happy if their requests are met, but there's a huge silent majority who simply don't care for speculation or leaks or competitive play - a gargantuan majority that's only so silent because of the nature of the internet - kids. Go into the comments sections for those Waluigi parodies and sort by new, then keep track of all the poor grammar, misspellings, and random humour - this is an untapped market that probably isn't going to be buying the full Fighter's Passes, whether that be due to unfamiliarity with their contents, or just their small wage of pocket money. "No moveset potential" is just not worth our time to debunk, it's such a stupid argument.

The reason for Waluigi's wildly different habilities may be because that draws attention to him. There's a moveset concept made by a youtuber called Duke of Dorks that bases itself solely on this characteristic of his, making him a fourth wall breaker, which is surprisingly fitting for him. Anyways, great video! Always happy to see the more stupid fan-made theories being debunked, and your logic is really good!
Couple things: 1. Piranha Plant was put in the game so that Petey Piranha could be in smash ultimate to satisfy the “everyone is here” slogan since Petey Piranha isn’t anywhere to be found in the World of Light mode. 2. Yes Geno is more obscure but he represents a game that certainly needs more representation in Super Mario RPG. But at least Geno got a full outfit and not just a hat… 3. Waluigi didn’t make the cut simply because Nintendo and Sakurai didn’t WANT to put Waluigi in smash. Nintendo stays throwing jabs at Waluigi even if it hurts his fanbase.

InkThinks i mean “Byleth 2” as something that everyone (at the time) questioned as it seemed no one asked for it. I wasnt clear enough with what my aforementioned argument was about, you see i argued against someone that said Fire Emblem reps would be more profitable than Mario reps as Fire Emblem would get more attention from it. However that was after Byleth and everyone made it clear there were too many Fire Emblem characters. I would agree Nintendo are known for assessing risk factor but i think they know Mario reps would be safe bets for easy money. Piranha plant is an example, completely out of nowhere for some money and people do like it.

What we do know is that Sakurai believes that Waluigi isn’t fit to be a playable fighter, as he is still an assist in ultimate. Sakurai prob believes that Waluigi being an assist reflects his role in the Mario series: Being present in games but never getting his own spotlight. Because Sakurai hasn’t made Waluigi playable in any smash game since he was introduced as an assist in Brawl, it’s likely that Sakurai thinks Waluigi being an assist fits his character perfectly. But, Sakurai has gone back on decisions before, so we’ll never quite know for sure.
I'm mixed on Waluigi. I grew up on Mario Party 3 so I feel like he should already be in the game, but I'm not exactly hoping we get Waluigi over someone like Crash. I'll play him if he gets in the game but I won't lose sleep over the lack of him.

I think they will just replace Walaluigis assist trophy to another character that functions the same as his assist power. Pretty simple right? The ol switcheroo. Then make him a character.
I think there’s really only three things working against Waluigi. 1. He’s an Assist Trophy, and we’ve yet to see one become playable in the same game. 2. His content would have to pull from multiple older games, which seems to go against Nintendo’s idea of first-party Smash DLC to sell specific Switch releases. 3. While the fan outcry for Waluigi happened months before launch, we don’t know when the full DLC roster was finalized. And without an official recent Smash Ballot, Sakurai could have dismissed the Waluigi fan support as a passing fad.
I think out of these the first point is the most convincing to me, I could legitimately see it working against him. The other two are quite as convincing to me

I always found the reveal of Fighter's Pass 2 to be interesting. It was Five more fighters... and what's this?! A sixth one! That last fighter slot being shown separate from the rest of the pack always felt significant to me. It could just mean "This pack has one more than the last pack did :o" of course, but I always had this gut feeling that it was... "And THIS one is the one you've been clamoring for!" ...and I don't think it's unfair to say that Waluigi is the most demanded character from Sakurai's perspective. So with WL you have a character with at LEAST a STRONG fan demand, that ALSO they happen to already have an in-game model to use as a starting point, that ALSO you already have all the rights to, that ALSO has been in a staggering number of (currently unrepresented!) games in the form of both the Mario Sports and Mario Party games. It's the closest thing to a slam-dunk left on the table for Sakurai, even if it's meme-y.

My only two arguments have ever been, "Waluigi hasn't been in a Main Series Game," and "Waluigi wouldn't be fun to play." 1) I say Main Series because, as you point out with "He doesn't have his own game," a lot of characters don't. All the games Waluigi has been in pretty much count as an Off-Series. 2) What makes me say, "Waluigi wouldn't be fun," is strictly that he's a cornerstone to the Mario Bros and Wario. Waluigi has connections to Luigi and Wario, and the same goes for Mario. Luigi was a clone of Mario until they gave him his own personality. Wario has his own personality but still tries to copy Mario for some moves. Wario and Luigi don't copy each other, but their formulas are similar when dissecting their moves. In the end, when trying to picture it, it may work, but not completely or satisfyingly. Is this the only option, not at all. However, it just feels like the choice they would make.
Great video! I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks Waluigi is great for Smash. He’s got quite the history, with moves like swimming through the air and spinning into his Gamma emblem from Mario Power Tennis. His stage could be Waluigi Pinball and his final smash could be Thorny Waluigi from the Mario Super Strikers games. His taunts could even be posing with a rose in his mouth or doing his famous crotch taunt. There’s a prophecy that states he’s gonna be the final DLC character added to Smash, acting as a grand finale or fan send-off of Sakurai’s hard work. We will just have to wait and see what the future holds, but I’m proud to be on Team Wah all the way! 😁
INFERNO95 Because limitations don’t really exist. People thought Pac-Man wasn’t gonna make it in due to lack of moveset, but they made it work. Nobody expected ROB to make it into Brawl because he’s not even a video game character, yet he’s in. Min Min was a spirit, but that didn’t deconfirm her. The point is that just because Waluigi is an assist trophy doesn’t mean he can’t get in.
What people mean by Waluigi having his own game being a factor is he needs a series to represent. He is a spin-off character. Not a Mario character. People call him a Mario character but he has never shown up in a Mario game that is not a Mario spin-off, if that's all it takes to be a Mario character then the Rabbids should be Mario characters because they had a spin-off together. It just doesn't work, Waluigi needs either his own game or an appearance in a main Mario game so he can represent a series in smash, otherwise he would have to represent a spin-off series which he would be the first character to ever do so.

I don't really think that they would need to remove assist trophies in order to feature them as fighters, but I would agree that waiting until the next game is likely the more realistic scenario. I think the only argument against Waluigi is that he’s an Assist Trophy. Unless I see an Assist Trophy become a fighter I think this rule still holds up, but I’m not going to say it’s impossible. Any character has a chance as long as they originated from a video game, I feel like that’s one big rule that’s never going to be broken.

Regardless of the canon argument, he has defenitely never been in a mainline Mario game (3d/2d platformers) and if he was truly worthy of smash bros nintendo would have added him to some Manline Mario game by now. This literally happens to every spinoff you can think of. A cannon character appears in a spin-off. Oh well i guess that means that game is cannon too. There are characters that were used even less and were much less known than Waluigi.

It's a game made in Japan so you gotta look outside the western perspective before making up claims because Sakurai is from Japan so his priority is going to be characters well known in Japan hence why some people get mad at inclusions (unless you are implying Japan doesn't matter and no one knows fire emblem).

InkThinks i mean “Byleth 2” as something that everyone (at the time) questioned as it seemed no one asked for it. I wasnt clear enough with what my aforementioned argument was about, you see i argued against someone that said Fire Emblem reps would be more profitable than Mario reps as Fire Emblem would get more attention from it. However that was after Byleth and everyone made it clear there were too many Fire Emblem characters. I would agree Nintendo are known for assessing risk factor but i think they know Mario reps would be safe bets for easy money. Piranha plant is an example, completely out of nowhere for some money and people do like it.

What we do know is that Sakurai believes that Waluigi isn’t fit to be a playable fighter, as he is still an assist in ultimate. Sakurai prob believes that Waluigi being an assist reflects his role in the Mario series: Being present in games but never getting his own spotlight. Because Sakurai hasn’t made Waluigi playable in any smash game since he was introduced as an assist in Brawl, it’s likely that Sakurai thinks Waluigi being an assist fits his character perfectly. But, Sakurai has gone back on decisions before, so we’ll never quite know for sure.

I'm mixed on Waluigi. I grew up on Mario Party 3 so I feel like he should already be in the game, but I'm not exactly hoping we get Waluigi over someone like Crash. I'll play him if he gets in the game but I won't lose sleep over the lack of him.

Waluigi is an assist trophy and even if an assist trophy character could get in there’s so many better choices then waluigi
I think they will just replace Walaluigis assist trophy to another character that functions the same as his assist power. Pretty simple right? The ol switcheroo. Then make him a character.
I think that there are a lot of simple solutions!
I think there’s really only three things working against Waluigi.
1. He’s an Assist Trophy, and we’ve yet to see one become playable in the same game.
2. His content would have to pull from multiple older games, which seems to go against Nintendo’s idea of first-party Smash DLC to sell specific Switch releases.
3. While the fan outcry for Waluigi happened months before launch, we don’t know when the full DLC roster was finalized. And without an official recent Smash Ballot, Sakurai could have dismissed the Waluigi fan support as a passing fad.
I think out of these the first point is the most convincing to me, I could legitimately see it working against him. The other two are quite as convincing to me

I always found the reveal of Fighter's Pass 2 to be interesting. It was Five more fighters... and what's this?! A sixth one! That last fighter slot being shown separate from the rest of the pack always felt significant to me.
It could just mean "This pack has one more than the last pack did :o" of course, but I always had this gut feeling that it was... "And THIS one is the one you've been clamoring for!" ...and I don't think it's unfair to say that Waluigi is the most demanded character from Sakurai's perspective.
So with WL you have a character with at LEAST a STRONG fan demand, that ALSO they happen to already have an in-game model to use as a starting point, that ALSO you already have all the rights to, that ALSO has been in a staggering number of (currently unrepresented!) games in the form of both the Mario Sports and Mario Party games. It's the closest thing to a slam-dunk left on the table for Sakurai, even if it's meme-y.

I think Nintendo gonna prefer to promote other franchises in the DLC. I don't see waluigi it's the most profitable decision
My only two arguments have ever been, "Waluigi hasn't been in a Main Series Game," and "Waluigi wouldn't be fun to play."
1) I say Main Series because, as you point out with "He doesn't have his own game," a lot of characters don't. All the games Waluigi has been in pretty much count as an Off-Series.
2) What makes me say, "Waluigi wouldn't be fun," is strictly that he's a cornerstone to the Mario Bros and Wario. Waluigi has connections to Luigi and Wario, and the same goes for Mario. Luigi was a clone of Mario until they gave him his own personality. Wario has his own personality but still tries to copy Mario for some moves. Wario and Luigi don't copy each other, but their formulas are similar when dissecting their moves. In the end, when trying to picture it, it may work, but not completely or satisfyingly.
Is this the only option, not at all. However, it just feels like the choice they would make.
Even if there WAS a "cannon" in the Mario series, explain why Dr. Mario is a playable character. He hasn't even appeared in spinoffs.
Great video! I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks Waluigi is great for Smash. He’s got quite the history, with moves like swimming through the air and spinning into his Gamma emblem from Mario Power Tennis. His stage could be Waluigi Pinball and his final smash could be Thorny Waluigi from the Mario Super Strikers games. His taunts could even be posing with a rose in his mouth or doing his famous crotch taunt. There’s a prophecy that states he’s gonna be the final DLC character added to Smash, acting as a grand finale or fan send-off of Sakurai’s hard work. We will just have to wait and see what the future holds, but I’m proud to be on Team Wah all the way! 😁

INFERNO95 Because limitations don’t really exist. People thought Pac-Man wasn’t gonna make it in due to lack of moveset, but they made it work. Nobody expected ROB to make it into Brawl because he’s not even a video game character, yet he’s in. Min Min was a spirit, but that didn’t deconfirm her. The point is that just because Waluigi is an assist trophy doesn’t mean he can’t get in.

What people mean by Waluigi having his own game being a factor is he needs a series to represent. He is a spin-off character. Not a Mario character. People call him a Mario character but he has never shown up in a Mario game that is not a Mario spin-off, if that's all it takes to be a Mario character then the Rabbids should be Mario characters because they had a spin-off together. It just doesn't work, Waluigi needs either his own game or an appearance in a main Mario game so he can represent a series in smash, otherwise he would have to represent a spin-off series which he would be the first character to ever do so.

I dont really disagree. I dont think that there is a ton blatantly working in favor of him besides the obvious sense of competition of prominent mario characters. I don't really think that they would need to remove assist trophies in order to feature them as fighters, but I would agree that waiting until the next game is likely the more realistic scenario. That said, just like you mentioned, it isn't impossible or really even unlikely, the timing would just seem weird. Im with you

I think the only argument against Waluigi is that he’s an Assist Trophy. Unless I see an Assist Trophy become a fighter I think this rule still holds up, but I’m not going to say it’s impossible. Any character has a chance as long as they originated from a video game, I feel like that’s one big rule that’s never going to be broken.

Regardless of the canon argument, he has defenitely never been in a mainline Mario game (3d/2d platformers) and if he was truly worthy of smash bros nintendo would have added him to some Manline Mario game by now. But he hasn't even been referenced at least.
Speaking of which just because something cannon has been mentioned in a spin-off it doesn't automatically mean it's cannon at all. This literally happens to every spinoff you can think of. A cannon character appears in a spin-off. Oh well i guess that means that game is cannon too. That is the weakest argument to justify his non cannon appearance. Pirahna plant. No one may have asked for it but at least it is widely recognizable by almost every Mario fan unlike waluigi who only the more hardcore fans. Plus it appears in the best selling Mario game as a antagonist all players run into.
Sure waluigi appeared in Mario kart and other popular spinoffs but some people never choose him or didn't get as much of an impact as pirahna plant because not everyone choses waluigi in those games
Heck i could argue goomba is more deserving than waluigi if anything because he is the first enemy we see in super Mario Bros or almost any Mario game. It would be a halarious addition.
Anyway my main point is that waluigi doesn't add to this gaming celebration as he is made as a spin-off only. Not mainline. Hence why Sakurai didn't want him to be added because he sees the bigger picture. Plus nintendo doesn't like to please memers (Steve has sales to back him up, Ridley is an iconic cool villain against Samus in Metroid. Well received game. Etc) what would fans do if nintendo were to let him join? They would probably never stop and would ask for Goku and other more crazy characters and nintendo knows well about this.

@@soaringstars314 I don't know. Daisy hasn't really been used in mainline Mario games since 1989. Many people have heard of her mainly because of her appearance in the spin off games. There are characters that serve even less of a purpose than Waluigi does and they are already in Smash. No one really knew what Fire Emblem was until they were put into Smash. There are characters that were used even less and were much less known than Waluigi.
@@Dragular daisy was still in a Mario platformer regardless and nintendo did acknowledge it during the timeline in the 35th anniversary (which btw shows that they care more about super Mario land than Mario galaxy 2). also super Mario land was a beloved game and i dont think you should downplay it just because it has been irrelevant. Nintendo clearly loved super Mario land as they have referenced it time and time again. We have other characters who haven't appeared for a while and joined but no one was mad (banjo and kazooie) so no, that is a bad argument. btw daisy is a echo so it's really easy to put her in especially since they recycled almost everything for her (voicelines)

Even if I get a little annoyed seeing fire emblem characters overrepresented, Fire emblem was obviously not known because they were only localized in Japan until 2003 around their inclusion in smash. Smash isn't a western game and never has been. It's a game made in Japan so you gotta look outside the western perspective before making up claims because Sakurai is from Japan so his priority is going to be characters well known in Japan hence why some people get mad at inclusions (unless you are implying Japan doesn't matter and no one knows fire emblem).

I was only stating how most people know Daisy for the spin off games that she's appeared in since she's only appeared in one mainline game and took a hiatus until Mario Tennis on the Nintendo 64.
