  • Darth Maul from The Phantom Menace never uses force lightning...why is this? We don't even see him use it in the Clone Wars, or Rebels for that matter, either. Why? Star Wars Dar Side users always use force lightning, even the fallen Jedi, Count Dooku. What is Maul hiding? Why doesn't he use it?

    If you have to have been hit by force lightning to learn how to use it then how did the first person to ever use force lightning learn how to use it?

      Goat on a boat Probably tried to harness pure electricity using the force and then had it accidently hit them. Therefore growing an affinity to it in legends, it does seem silly.

So why doesn't obi wan use force run at the end of the movie to beat the laser gates and help qui gon beat darth maul?

What they did with him in the comics clone wars tv show and rebels truely made him the most interesting character and one of if not the most complex and cunning person in the galaxy. All I know is whenever he shows up big time consequences happen. As good ole jr, from wwe would say business is about to pick up. And it always did. Anytime he came on it was just watch tv. I hate how they went with his story after episode 1. As much as killing him off in episode 1 was a mistake- it happened and the way he died left no doubts as to whether he could have survived that. Maul died in episode 1 and the rest is more bad Disney fan fiction.

    let's not forget in legends, sidious sent maul to an training academy thing where e was trained in combat and was specifically not allowed to use the force. so that's why he is so good as a fighter and in my opinion why he prefers not to use force powers such as lightning and force choke

    Darth Maul definitely understood Force lightning. He simply preferred not to use it. He was trained from a small child to be an assassin, and prefer to kill up close. Not to mention, he probably understood that the more powerful Jedi can reflect lightning back at the user. He has studied everything about the Jedi from Sidious. He was well-trained and they were no match for him

  • @7strSlnger678
    @7strSlnger678 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    I love Maul. He was extremely powerful, but I think his personal code defined how he used his abilities. So I think he has the ability to use Force lightning, but chose not too. I believe he was stronger than Dooku as well.

    • @gregoryl.levitre9759
      @gregoryl.levitre9759 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As much as I like the character of Maul more than Dooku, Dooku would have mopped the floor with Maul's face. Dooku was an exceptionally powerful Sith, just below Sidious in power level (which was why Sidious sacrificed him- he knew he was a real threat to him), and he was extremely experienced, not only in darkside abilities but he was a fully trained Jedi before falling to the darkside. Maul was a Sith Assassin whose specialty was martial skills and martial use of the force and that's it. And we do see him pull off some subtle moves in the novel Darth Maul: Saboteur, but nowhere near the level of mental chess that Dooku played for decades.
      Darth Maul is powerful, but he is not exceptionally powerful as Sith go. I could easily name at least a dozen Sith off the top of my head that would take him down in mere moments.

    Dooku was a very skilled and calm fighter who tended to taunt his enemies using his superiority and arrogance and he was kind of a scholar of a force user, maybe truly not that powerful but very skilled and hungry for knowledge as he was a very precise and patient character which is also displayed by his actually superior use of the dark side not being corrupted by it - without the red and yellow eyes and the corrupted flesh. It seems he was well aware of how to use the dark side as was Palpatine before his life was threatened fighting Mace Windu where he suffered severe damage exceeding his limits and drawing a lot of energy from the dark side so that it first became visible that was a dark side user. Maul who on the other hand used the dark side all the time to fuel his physical strength has from the beginning shown the taint of the dark side.

    • @gregoryl.levitre9759
      @gregoryl.levitre9759 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, Dooku was exceptionally powerful, not only as a force user but also in overall economic power, influence and life experience. He is also the only Sith of that era (including Sidious) who possessed both Jedi and Sith training and decades of experience in both roles.

  • @SelahViolinist
    @SelahViolinist 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I like to think of the whole "who beats who" in Star Wars in a more "elemental" sense (like water beats fire, etc.). Darth Maul beat Qui-Gon because Qui-Gon's fighting style was better suited to open spaces (wasn't it similar to the crazy style of Yoda?) whereas Maul's was more flexible and could adapt to the closed spaces. Later in the clone wars, I think Obi-Wan was able to beat Maul (for the most part) because Obi-Wan's defensive fighting style and trolly personality were well suited for aggravating Maul. Then, Dooku could beat Obi-Wan because Dooku's finesse in dueling could get past Obi-Wan's defenses, and Anakin could beat Dooku because Anakin was able to overwhelm him. Mace Windu is a strange one to analyze. I think Windu would easily beat Maul because Windu's Vapaad would draw in Maul's intense rage and use it against him. With Dooku; however, Windu's Vapaad would have much less rage to draw in, so that fight would be close to a 50/50. And yes, I believe Windu did beat Sidious because of Vapaad (at least you can think of Windu as a glass cannon/one-trick pony). Finally, I think Maul was definitely stronger than Dooku before Maul got cut in half, but afterwards Maul became less powerful overall (I mean, if the Chosen One lost half of his potential due to being cut in half, why wouldn't Maul?).

Furthermore, no one would suspect that he would use it, therefore it is very likely that he CAN use it. But, as you said he just doesn't like to. In fact I think that darth maul can use a great many more powers than we see him use, he just thinks of them as trump cards to turn to when it is absolutely necessary. After all he is still sith, conserving his life takes precedent over something as silly as disliking a technique.

      @kaisercronik8249 7 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      What you say doesn't even make any sense. Balance means harmony in the context of "bring balance to the force". Anakin brought balance to the force when he killed the emperor. That meant no Sith, but one Jedi, not equal numbers. The reason he had to wipe out the Jedi order, was because they became servants of a corrupt republic, rather than acting in accordance with the force. By wiping out the Sith and leaving Luke as the only remaining Jedi, Anakin brought balance to the force, because from then on Luke was able to create a new Jedi order, in tune with the force, rather than subservient to politicians.

    So i don't under stand why a lot of people don't believe maul was a Sith Lord, they say he was a Sith Assassin or a Sith Warrior but not a Sith Lord. In Rebels (cannon) he claims "Formerly Darth, now just Maul" meaning at some point he considered himself as a Sith lord worthy of the title of Darth and no longer does. And in the EU Darth Sidious named his apprentice Darth Maul, Sith Lord after he’d passed his final test by showing the desire to kill his master. Other than that i like the video and agree on a lot of the points.

    I think Maul knew how to use it, he just preferred to use other techniques and attacks. I think that he and Dooku were on par with each other, both in terms of skill and power. Dooku was more of a duelist than a fighter, but he made up for that with his strength and proficiency in using the Force. Maul on the other hand, was a warrior. He knew how to fight and fight dirty. Maul was skilled in the Force, but preferred to get up close.

  • @christophersanchez7731

    I think Maul is capable of learning Force Lightning but couldn't for two reasons
    One he prefers to fight physically preferng to defeat enemies with his physical prowess as you stated in video
    Secondly it's the same reason why Asasji Ventress and the Imperial Inquisitors didn't learn it, they were all minions of the Sith, Maul was perhaps intended to replace Plagueis as the Second Sith before Anakin and Naboo came into the picture, as he was given the title of Darth
    But while Plageuis lived Palpatine had to appease him by limiting Maul's knowledge, teaching him only how to fight physically and be an assassin as well as a living weapon
    Not only Maul wasn't taught Force Lightning he didn't know how to defend against Force Attacks as he didn't even block Lightning with Lightsaber
    In contrast to Dooku who while a placeholder for Vader, was Trained as a true Sith Lord. He was trained to command and to lead as he was tasked to help cause the Clone Wars in a public sense
    Dooku didn't just learned Lightning but how to defend against it as he deflected the Redirected Lightning from Yoda at Episode 2
    Maul's education as a Sith Lord was incomplete as evidenced to his vulnerably to not only Lightning but Force attacks in general
    Had he not fallen at Naboo, Palpatine freed from Appeasing Plagueis would have completed Maul's training in Dooku's place
    Although it seemed Palpatine had plans for Dooku before Maul's failure
    He might test the two's worth by pitting them against eachother on which would be Sidious' apprentice to serve in the Clone Wars."
    Should that happen it's unknown who would win if Maul was given some formal training after Naboo
    Maul has potiental
    Dooku was one of the finest swordsmen in modern history at the time
    If he was fresh from defecting from Jedi with no formal Sith training such a fight between Maul and Dooku could go either way
    Maul might win with physical power, as Dooku's style Makashi is weak lacking kinetic energy and weak against strong acrobatic opponents like Maul
    Dooku might win with Pure skill
    But again fight could go either way. That could make a good fan-fiction or video (like what if Maul hadn't failed Naboo and was pitted against Jedi Master Dooku for Sith Mantle )
    Anyway to conclude Maul's training was incomplete
    He's capable of learning Lightning if he tried but might not because he prefers physical fights
    But also because Maul like the Sith assassins and minions after him had an incomplete education on purpose as Plagueis ordered Palpatine to only teach him to be a warrior and Assassin not a true Sith skilled in Force as well as Lightsaber combat
    Thus because he never completed his training he never learned Lightning from his master, and was ironically vulnerable to Lightning because he was also never taught how to defend against it

As to why it could be that he wanted to make sure the ghost took off so he destroy the rebel fleet. If he killed them could incite fighting to the bitter end. Or could be that it would be better send inquisitors after them just to see if his inquisitors are worthy of living. Or be some other reason. Maybe Star Wars Theory has more information.

    Oooh, good one. and I think I agree with your conclusion. I've always sorta looked at Force-lightning as the Sith "finesse move," in a way, and Maul was all about gettin' up in your grill and takin' you out. Yeah, he had finesse in his acrobatics, I will give you that, but his pscyhe was more brutal than that.

That way he could employ it into his fighting style without compromising his morals or code of conduct

    There are two old C-canon references to Maul using lightning that I know of. TCW Magazine, US version, issue #13 says he could use it, and we see him use it in the final fight in The Phantom Menace game. There is no call to game mechanics for this, and there is no canon contradiction. However, you used the plurals "games" so I'm interested to know what other games there were. The link you showed wasnt' TPM because he used red lightning in that one.
    Also, Maul was very powerful and had potential. He would never have been an equal to Anakin's potential, but this is another discussion that I have solid points from original sources to back up if you ever feel like discussing them. For the most part, I'm just interested in the other games, if you please don't mind sharing the titles. :) I did give just share the magazine info. :D

      Video games differ from Developer to Developer. Many of the inconsistencies of this universe are due to so many different companies making SW video games and taking the liberties to do whatever they want that adds what they think is funner game mechanics. In actual SW lore Darth Maul did not train in force lightning and did not even care about channeling it. His focus was 100% martial skills and the force abilities that enhance them. He was a darkside thug basically.

    You clearly know nothing about the samurai. Seriously, do some reading about them. The myths about them are all based on one book - Bushido, The Soul of Japan. Which was written purely to sell well in America. By a Japanese mam who had studied and lived in America.
    Just like how most of the pirate myths are based on Treasure Island.
    They did not live by a rigid code of honour (they betrayed each other all of the time); they only comitted ritual suicide if they were forced to (which is pretty much the same as being killed); they always preferred long distance warfare, they used guns and cannons as soon as they came to Japan, and longbows before that, whenever they could because getting up close and personal was dangerous.
    As a student of history, it bothers me when people clearly have views on world events based on The Last Samurai and nonsense BS like that.
    What I find funny is that everyone thinks of the ninja as sneaky backstabbing assassins, which they were, but they were also the only ones in the samurai period who were loyal and trustworthy.

    Maul and Duku were completely different in their approach to the force. Maul was assassin, warrior, up close and personal, made the dark side his thing. Duku was different in how he shrugged aside teachings from either light or dark side exclusively, prefering a more middle path between the two. Where this suggests he never fully mastered light or dark abilities, compared to those who focussed only on one aspect, his neutrality allowed him to use the whole force. A great, great shame he wasnt given development in the films as unlike Annakin, he brought a better chance of balance to their universe. Given some opportunity, Duku could have become a linchpin in the story. A quick betrayal from Sidious saw his head removed, imo was a copout from Lucas & co who saw a problem complicating storylines too much and decided to knock him off

    Maul's my favourite character and there is a lot of shadow that exists around him. There are things I've read about him being able to control certain creatures like those squid things in Solo and various others that other Sith couldn't. He was one of the few Sith who could use Force Scream - to name a few things. I've always thought ht had the ability to use it due to his Dathomirian heritage and Magick that's in his biology. But with his fighting style and - as you say - preference with being up close and personal - he probably neglected to use it because it took the fun out of the fight itself

    After all he didn't use it, even in desperation, against sidious.

    I believe that he very easily could, but like every other warrior, and even some gamers, he vastly preferred his own method of doing things. A real world example that I can give of myself would be when playing some video games with abilities that ultimately make the game significantly easier than I wind up making them because in the moment I tend to forget that I have those abilities because I don't really use them all that often, only remembering after the fact "oh shit, I could have done that, that would have made things so much easier right there!"
    tl;dr, I'm pretty positive he knows but either prefers other abilities over force lightning or gets so caught up in the moment and what he's doing that he just forgets to use those abilities. Most likely the former.

    Nah I think you're pretty spot on. He could have used Lightning, but because of his ego and pride, one of the weaknesses in both jedi and sith, he never saw it as an option to use. Up close battle really was his passion and desire. It's his savage way and preference to see killing up close by his abilities with wielding a meele combat weapon, which of course doesn't mean he would've never thrown his weapon like a javeline or similar.
    Palpatine in that regard is the exact opposite of him. He gained his position by deceit and backstabbing, not hasitating to use foul play and manipulation to it's highest agenda to achieve what he wanted, disregarding his age in the later movies.
    He was so to say "a brilliant coward". A puppet master who liked to see his playthings dancing to his tunes while he sat back and enjoyed it. Certainly, if push came to shove he had to fight, but not without a backup plan, probably due to his "clairvoyance" abilties.

    While playing Jedi academy and outcast, I noticed that more often then not using sith lightning against force users doesn't deal as much damage and is prohibitively expensive in consuming force power, by they time you have regenerated enough force power to respond to other threats and such you may very well already be dead. Unless you just stall for time and run. Which are not always options. Using force power to absorb enemy attacks, pushes, rage, speed, etc when used correctly seem to deal more damage per force used when incorporating them in saber melee.

    I think this is just a case of fight amnesia. These guys seem to forget that they have some good Force and lightsaber attacks at their disposal.
    One of my favorite ideas that we've never seen in film is turning off the lightsaber as a feint. When the attacker is thrown off balance, you reactivate your blade and strike.
    I think part of this fight amnesia is because the lightsaber duels were meant to look cool before moving the story along. The original movies weren't defined by them. Looking back, most people say that the best parts of the first three movies were the duels. That's fine, but if the story isn't that good to begin with then the duels won't save the movie.
