Its all mental fortitude and focus, until they lose it, then it gets taken advantage of. Also, Jedi and Sith seem to only engage in lightsaber combat once they've determined they're of an equal force level and can't take each other out immediately using the force... This is why Darth Vader, in his full form, can pretty much crush literally anybody, and probably only engaged in lightsaber fights with Luke because he didn't actually want to kill him, but turn him.

DJSbros Well, in there defense Star Wars has been like this for years and years. If Lucas liked what people were writing and creating he would make it canon. The Star Wars Universe is basically a living place by now. Its sooo jam packed with facts like how a Pod Racer works to the Interior of the millennium falcon to the damn politics dictating the fates of many worlds to how Lightsabers are made to reasons why technology kinda sucks during episode 4,5,6. Its massive. Probably the biggest story ever constructed. Warhammer is up there as well. There are entire stories that take place Bespin and more.
@@SBragg88 It's not that he never used it, he was always using the force, it's just that Maul's fighting style was very much focused on improving what he was already good at; physical combat and pushing his own abilities to overpower his opponents. He wasn't as well attuned to the force as the Skywalkers or Palpatine so he focused on his inherent skills. Naturally he'll be able to push and pull and use the odd mind trick, but he was mostly using the force to focus his rage and improve his strength and mobility.

Given Dooku did not force choke or levitate Kenobi in Attack of the Clones, when they fought one on one, I'd assume Palpatine had something to do with this occurring in Revenge of the Sith. What better way to test Anakin's feasibility for a Sith than by removing his mentor from the battle?
Yeah a lot of things point toward it. The duel was to test Anakin so if Obi-Wan helped him it would ruin the entire thing. Additionally those two cuts to Palpatine in the movie seem kinda unnecessary otherwise and what a coincidence that they both happen right before Dooku uses the force on Obi-Wan.

+RastaGaming While Dooku was definitely more powerful than Obi-Wan, you most likely need to not only be stronger, but be much stronger than your opponent in order to break through their protection as otherwise the majority of fights would be determined by force powers rather than lightsaber combat as your opponent can't get a lucky strike on you when you're choking them. And as kaiserliam said, Dooku only used the force on Obi-Wan in that specific duel with Palpatine present.
I think it would have had terrible effects on Luke as the planet's connection to the Dark side managed to affect Yoda's mind. Imagine then the effects on a baby. Would Luke have gone to the Dark side? And that's aside of all the dangers on the planet.

Actually there have been plenty ocassions in the clone wars when sith force choked jedi mid-battle. For example dooku against anakin on naboo, or ventress against kenobi and anakin. Thats why i find that force shield theory a bit contradictory cause how could ventress break through the barriers of the chosen one and obi wan( who is however one of the strongest jedi) at the same time.

Well they thought that they had just beaten ventress so naturally they’d be off guard. Plus, ventress had just been abandoned and left for dead by her master so she was probably quite angry which strengthens her dark side abilities. Darth Sidious has far-reaching and ancient knowledge of the Dark Side from a lifetime being a massive dark side nerd. He's a Dark Side Otaku. Particularly, he is a master of Force Scream, which can temporarily disrupt even the strongest opponents force shield. Notably we see him do this when Mace Windu et al - attempt to arrest him at the end of the prequel trilogy. He twirls into battle (telekinesis of himself) but also lets out a bloodcurdling inhuman screaming noise - then proceeds to decimate 2 jedi masters in the span of less than a second: utterly embarrassing their combat prowess. The answer there is simple - Sidious's force scream disrupted their force shields temporarily, reducing their heightened reflexes, force speed, intuitive evasion, etc - and turning them into just dudes for a moment. The same is true in the case of Dooku force choking Obi Wan. Under any normal circumstance this wouldn't be possible, and Obi Wan is clearly surprised when it occurs - Dooku isn't strong enough on his own to do that. What Dooku knows that Obi Wan doesn't, is there is another Sith master in the room. Dooku isn't skilled enough to disrupt Obi Wan's force shield, and choke him all at once - while also 1v2'ing Obi Wan and Anakin: and he isn't - Sidious has modified a force scream to be little more than a 'yip!' - which he uses a few times actually - to quickly disrupt or alter a situation, without overtly Force Screaming. All Dooku had to do was recognize the opportunity and force choke. The best evidence of this isn't actually Dooku / Obi Wan, but Anakin. Watch him closely in the same scene. Sidious does his Force Yip, then it cuts back to the three of them - Obi Wan looks shocked (his defenses were dispelled with no explanation) and Dooku immediately Force Chokes, but Anakin nearly face plants despite that nobody has hit him (he actually had Dooku's exposed flank right when Sidious 'Yipped' (I'm having fun with this Force Yip thing). Dooku kicks backward, but the force with which Anakin flies away is completely unreasonable for a distracted kick - Anakin goes flying like 30+ feet and richochets off a wall: Dooku's leg didn't impart that much force, Sidious broke both their shields, and may have even contributed with telekinesis.
But that would have meant that Sidious had revealed himself. It is clear lyrics stated that he surpressed his aura until confronted by the jedi council. Other force users would have immediately seen him as being strong in the force.

Dooku was more of a duelist and preferred to fight with sabers, but would have been proficient enough with the force as he was a generally powerful force user and former jedi master, I think that obi-wan was caught off guard as he and anakin went in with the expectation of a saber fight and probably expected dooku to counterattack after parrying both obi-wan and anakin instead of using a force attack and then a physical attack on anakin

Lightsaber fighting forms called for different forms of focus. Some forms are defensive which also raise ones defense to force attacks. Others forms relied on focusing your attack which lowers your defenses to force attack. Since Obi-Wan knew that Dooku was a far superior lightsaber dueler, he would need to focus his attacks to get past some of Dooku’s defenses, which left him open to a force attack.
There was an old show on G4(TechTV?) called Arena, where two teams would go head-to-head in various games, and one of the regular ones was Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. In it, 2v2 Jedi would face each other and there was a common technique where one would Force Choke an opponent while the other would swing their lightsaber, being coined "Force Piñata". That's what I thought of, when I came across this video.
So I went to 4:13 and slowed down to .25 speed to try and analyze what happened in that moment to see if Obi-Wan had a reason to be distracted or lower his Force-Guard... and now all I'm noticing is a continuity error for Dooku in how he is holding the weapon. On the close up of Obi-Wan taking a swing at Dooku, Dooku has his left hand free and is swinging be back towards Anakin while his right hand holding his saber above his head moves to block Obi-Wan. Then in the next, backed up POV, shot Dooku suddenly has both hands on his saber as he lifts his blade up knocking Obi-Wan and Anakin's blades up as well just before doing the kick and choke throws. Continuity errors aside I think I'd just chalk it up to Obi-Wan getting a tad aggressive and trying to channel energy into his attack and pulling from his defense a bit (like how ships will divert energy from shields to weapons) and Dooku took advantage of that moment... maybe Dooku sensed a surge of offensive power in the force and realized that defensive power would be down so he did the choke.
If palpatine used any force ability to Strengthen count dooku The Jedi would’ve been able to detect it, revealing that palpatine was a sith which would have change the whole movie
In the clone wars Ventras (probably butchered the spelling) force chokes both Anakin and Obi-Wan at the same time. So to answer the question about Dooku, I think part of it is catching your opponent off guard. If you go to swing at your opponent, they may be able to catch you with your guard down and instead of blocking take advantage of your weak defense in the force.
With all this said, why didn't any of the Jedi just crush Grievous' chest like Windu in the OG SW:CW? To my knowledge, he wasn't Force Sensitive. I see it counter intuitive to go into Lightsaber Combat when they could simply crush his heart & lungs. Ehhh
I think a lot of Jedi don’t know that skill. It was a dark side skill. Windu was pretty good at channeling the dark side during confrontations, but I’m sure not a lot of other Jedi were capable

If anakin hadn't intervened, Palpatine would be dead (unless there is something in the novelization that contradicts what I said, which is possible. it's been a while). Being able to absorb force lightning with his hands wouldn't have changed the movie.
i always viewed it as "using the force takes willpower and concentration" and those are finite resources even for the most mentally strong of people. i.e there is only so much you can endure a staring contest before you have to blink or look away. the longer you try to hold out, the more variables are added to what you need to consciously control on your body in order to maintain eye contact and strains the brain exponentially as time passes. now imagine having to exert all that control not only on yourself but on things around you and imagine what kind of mental strain that would cause even on the most trained of minds. using the force is not using some video game like magic points, its simply a question of how hard and how long one can maintain their focus on what they do before their mind decides it needs a break

Actually there have been plenty ocassions in the clone wars when sith force choked jedi mid-battle. For example dooku against anakin on naboo, or ventress against kenobi and anakin. Thats why i find that force shield theory a bit contradictory cause how could ventress break through the barriers of the chosen one and obi wan( who is however one of the strongest jedi) at the same time.

Well they thought that they had just beaten ventress so naturally they’d be off guard. Plus, ventress had just been abandoned and left for dead by her master so she was probably quite angry which strengthens her dark side abilities. But I do sort of cringe whenever I see and I’m like “cmon chosen one you can do better”

Darth Sidious has far-reaching and ancient knowledge of the Dark Side from a lifetime being a massive dark side nerd. He's a Dark Side Otaku. Particularly, he is a master of Force Scream, which can temporarily disrupt even the strongest opponents force shield. Notably we see him do this when Mace Windu et al - attempt to arrest him at the end of the prequel trilogy. He twirls into battle (telekinesis of himself) but also lets out a bloodcurdling inhuman screaming noise - then proceeds to decimate 2 jedi masters in the span of less than a second: utterly embarrassing their combat prowess. The answer there is simple - Sidious's force scream disrupted their force shields temporarily, reducing their heightened reflexes, force speed, intuitive evasion, etc - and turning them into just dudes for a moment.
The same is true in the case of Dooku force choking Obi Wan. Under any normal circumstance this wouldn't be possible, and Obi Wan is clearly surprised when it occurs - Dooku isn't strong enough on his own to do that. What Dooku knows that Obi Wan doesn't, is there is another Sith master in the room. Dooku isn't skilled enough to disrupt Obi Wan's force shield, and choke him all at once - while also 1v2'ing Obi Wan and Anakin: and he isn't - Sidious has modified a force scream to be little more than a 'yip!' - which he uses a few times actually - to quickly disrupt or alter a situation, without overtly Force Screaming. All Dooku had to do was recognize the opportunity and force choke.
The best evidence of this isn't actually Dooku / Obi Wan, but Anakin. Watch him closely in the same scene. Sidious does his Force Yip, then it cuts back to the three of them - Obi Wan looks shocked (his defenses were dispelled with no explanation) and Dooku immediately Force Chokes, but Anakin nearly face plants despite that nobody has hit him (he actually had Dooku's exposed flank right when Sidious 'Yipped' (I'm having fun with this Force Yip thing). Dooku kicks backward, but the force with which Anakin flies away is completely unreasonable for a distracted kick - Anakin goes flying like 30+ feet and richochets off a wall: Dooku's leg didn't impart that much force, Sidious broke both their shields, and may have even contributed with telekinesis.
Budo Ka yeah looks like Anakin was just dumb and knocked himself off balance as his saber got deflected.
But that would have meant that Sidious had revealed himself. It is clear lyrics stated that he surpressed his aura until confronted by the jedi council. Other force users would have immediately seen him as being strong in the force.

Dooku was more of a duelist and preferred to fight with sabers, but would have been proficient enough with the force as he was a generally powerful force user and former jedi master, I think that obi-wan was caught off guard as he and anakin went in with the expectation of a saber fight and probably expected dooku to counterattack after parrying both obi-wan and anakin instead of using a force attack and then a physical attack on anakin
I don't think so. They've had plenty of duels against him and even switched their own saber styles to throw dooku off. He was simply too poweful

Lightsaber fighting forms called for different forms of focus. Some forms are defensive which also raise ones defense to force attacks. Others forms relied on focusing your attack which lowers your defenses to force attack. Since Obi-Wan knew that Dooku was a far superior lightsaber dueler, he would need to focus his attacks to get past some of Dooku’s defenses, which left him open to a force attack.

There was an old show on G4(TechTV?) called Arena, where two teams would go head-to-head in various games, and one of the regular ones was Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. In it, 2v2 Jedi would face each other and there was a common technique where one would Force Choke an opponent while the other would swing their lightsaber, being coined "Force Piñata". That's what I thought of, when I came across this video.

And I’m not arguing that fact there I was implying that Savage Oppress forced choked in the middle of a fight
So I went to 4:13 and slowed down to .25 speed to try and analyze what happened in that moment to see if Obi-Wan had a reason to be distracted or lower his Force-Guard... and now all I'm noticing is a continuity error for Dooku in how he is holding the weapon. On the close up of Obi-Wan taking a swing at Dooku, Dooku has his left hand free and is swinging be back towards Anakin while his right hand holding his saber above his head moves to block Obi-Wan. Then in the next, backed up POV, shot Dooku suddenly has both hands on his saber as he lifts his blade up knocking Obi-Wan and Anakin's blades up as well just before doing the kick and choke throws.
Continuity errors aside I think I'd just chalk it up to Obi-Wan getting a tad aggressive and trying to channel energy into his attack and pulling from his defense a bit (like how ships will divert energy from shields to weapons) and Dooku took advantage of that moment... maybe Dooku sensed a surge of offensive power in the force and realized that defensive power would be down so he did the choke.
If palpatine used any force ability to Strengthen count dooku The Jedi would’ve been able to detect it, revealing that palpatine was a sith which would have change the whole movie

In the clone wars Ventras (probably butchered the spelling) force chokes both Anakin and Obi-Wan at the same time. So to answer the question about Dooku, I think part of it is catching your opponent off guard. If you go to swing at your opponent, they may be able to catch you with your guard down and instead of blocking take advantage of your weak defense in the force.

I think a lot of Jedi don’t know that skill. It was a dark side skill. Windu was pretty good at channeling the dark side during confrontations, but I’m sure not a lot of other Jedi were capable

no? Windu had already successfully defeated Palpatine. Vapaad is extremely effective against dark side users and Windu had Palpatine on the ropes. If anakin hadn't intervened, Palpatine would be dead (unless there is something in the novelization that contradicts what I said, which is possible. it's been a while). Being able to absorb force lightning with his hands wouldn't have changed the movie.

i always viewed it as "using the force takes willpower and concentration" and those are finite resources even for the most mentally strong of people. i.e there is only so much you can endure a staring contest before you have to blink or look away. the longer you try to hold out, the more variables are added to what you need to consciously control on your body in order to maintain eye contact and strains the brain exponentially as time passes. now imagine having to exert all that control not only on yourself but on things around you and imagine what kind of mental strain that would cause even on the most trained of minds. using the force is not using some video game like magic points, its simply a question of how hard and how long one can maintain their focus on what they do before their mind decides it needs a break
