"It's a bittersweet moment for me with this engine. This is the winning Engine Builder's Shootout Engine from 2007. About 6 months ago, I was contacted by Bruce McKean, a colorful older person from Queensland, Australia. Bruce wanted an engine he could brag to his friends about. He frequently referred to the Shootout Engine as something that resembled the look and power he was after. When I told Bruce that this engine was available, he had to have it! Worried that my 84 year old customer might have a handful with this engine and not wanting him to get hurt, I slightly de-tuned it. Compression is now at 9:1, the camshaft has been changed to our #2288, Ignition is our Magna-Spark Ready-to-Run using an MSD digital 6AL box in conjunction with our programmable Black Box. The exhaust was changed to a custom A-1 Low-Down with 1 3/4" primaries and custom made 1 3/4" heater boxes.
The engine will be going into a 1973 Karmann Ghia. Bruce plans on driving it to car shows and the local "old Timers" hangouts. With 200 HP and close to 170 ft/lbs. of torque, I'm sure he will have fun with it as i did in the shootout."

I had a 1910 in a 71 super beetle baja .
It was built by the empi company to showcase all of their parts. Was custom painted 9 color oldschool fade style by a well known guy that I can never remember the name of. Got it for 2 grand barely running and spent 3 days fixing and turning it and it did wheelies in first second and a bit in third gear with 35x12.50 tires on it. Sold it for around 5 grand afterwards.
Still wish I had kept it.

There is something so satasfying about the sound of taking a VW aircooled motor and turning it into a 200 horsepower machine especially knowing it originally was made to have 36 horses In a stock configuation i actually have 2 freinds that are brothers and both are mechanics in a family business one is a Chevy drag racer and the other is a VW guy Ive always loved hearing them argue over their opinions The VW guy has a point with his brother who is always building first generation Camaros or 55thru 57 Bel Airs and does spend ridiculous amounts of money to get a car dialed in to his liking where the VW guy Has his machining costs but many of the parts are pretty in expensive he often purchases at swap meets and other gatherings at his leisure we all lived relatively close to Carlyle Pa. and could drive there for the day and back home the same day

That sounds beautiful. How is the longevity of an engine like this? Is it a 1/4 mile at a time engine, or could it be put to use road racing or in a street car and have reasonable life? Your kits are extremely tempting.
Pat's Engines are built to last. With proper care and maintenance, they should last for a very long time.

Has anyone had any problem with serpentine belts not slipping enough and their fans exploding even though they're balanced? I mean if CB using them they must be successful but I've heard a lot of bad things and I'm about ready to purchase an MST kit

what would 0-60 be like with this engine on a beetle? (new transmission of course).
That's what I would really like to know as well. I've had a few fast cars in the past and Horsepower means nothing to me. The only way you can get an idea of how fast a car is, is by 0-60, 1/4 mile times.

@@lrreidjr I have a 2300 series engine built to @ 220 HP in a 2006 Trikeshop Roadhawk Limited Edition. My average is 16 MPG ... @ 20 MPG highway at legal speeds. Hope this helps ... ^v^
