@@warbuzzard7167 yeah they did it with the apache when it came out, they tested it against some warbirds but there's other helis out there that need a go
@@pestuff70 That's how helicopters fly at speed. Landing and taking off like an airplane is also pretty common depending on loading

14:35 - About the Apache control issues in DCS - there is a pretty amazing post written about these issues on the Steam reviews page for the Apache module. It's written by a career Apache mechanic that isn't an Apache pilot himself, but was working on Apaches for two decades (IIRC) and can operate the heli in the full motion sim he has access to as a part of his job. He wrote that he can cold start the Apache and feels pretty good about doing short flights, keep it in hover, doing simpler maneuvers etc, but since obviously isn't officially qualified to do it in the real thing, he does it in the full motion simulator that's normally used to train Apache pilots.
He stated that the DCS Apache is WAY harder to control than the real thing. That is apparently caused by the fact, that the DCS Apache lacks certain important feature the real deal has.
The real heli has an updated modern FBW package that constantly modifies and sort-of "autocorrects" the pilot's inputs, as a result of which the overall experience of controlling the heli is much smoother, and causes the perception that the heli is much easier to control.
The Apache is possible to fly even without this mode, but it's a nightmare to control, and the onboard computer considers flying without it an emergency. He also wrote that Apache pilots HATE flying the bird without it, and dread the moment when it disconnects.
So, he basically claims that the DCS Apache is like flying the real thing, after the flight computer crashed. Oh and it feels way too heavy.

from an outsider POV looking at how these helis fly in DCS and looking at them in IRL videos they do seem a lot more clumsy than they should be
@@hertzwave8001 Yeah, i guess that that was his main point. The real heli is actually somewhat easier to fly than the DCS version. Definitely.
There's other thing to keep in mind - a lot of the unreal weirdness in GR videos is caused by it being a multiplayer environment.
Some of the collisions in Grim Reapers' videos look like DCS has extremely janky or even downright crappy physics engine, and while the jank might be true to a certain extent, it's usually not as bad as it looks on the recordings.
The landing gears disappearing into the ground (or ramps), planes phasing through buildings, wide variety of clipping issues, anti air assets aiming/chasing stuff that isn't there anymore, things like that. A lot of the odd stuff that happens in the videos is caused by sync issues, lag etc.
I guess that unless (until?) we have some sort of near-zero-latency networks and code to match, multiuser simulator environments will probably always have these odd clipping/passing-through-each-other issues and visual nonsense.
Or, maybe, just maybe, DCS might have a crappy net code.

After watching another military pilot flying in DCS crash repeatedly on another youtube video, I think this is (and has been for some time) kind of an epidemic in realism games to make things way harder than they are in real life as if it their intent is not to be realistic but to fool the dumb or masochistic players into thinking it must be authentic if it's difficult.
There are loads of guys on forums making developers ruin their games because they are hellbent their belief that realism always means an unfun pain in the ass. A good example is how realism shooters have tried to make hip firing feel really unpredictable and strange when pointing and shooting at a man sized target with a gun in real life is just as natural and intuitive as pointing your finger.
Never in my life have I known something I needed so much until I received it. Full fidelity WWI fighters for DCS...

I would say losing track of which you was manning the guns and which was flying the aircraft constitutes a pretty serious breakdown in cockpit resource management.

@@KortanaDCS you really do have a wonderful voice. You can learn from the best online now, and you can do jobs from home or anywhere. Back when I started, my childhood friend told me how much he made a year doing voices. We use to do them as kids. He made $3 MILLION/year. That was in 2002. I did a “Mr. T impersonator” on the TV show “My name is Earl”. I was there for 20 minutes, and got paid $8,000 for 20 minutes work. Of course that was over the years and most of it was from residuals. But still. I’ve done a lot of commercials, both local and national. I got my wife into it and she works a few times a year(she has a beautiful voice like you), but she’s an actress and focuses mostly on that. You could make a lot of money with your voice. Besides all that, you are so dang good at DCS. It’s really impressive. I am totally hooked on GR. And I don’t even play the game. Although I am tempted to. You guys are the best! Take care.

Never thought I'd see a flying boat enter a deep stall and start bouncing in the air. Standard flight model at its finest.
He wasn't stalling, he was t-posing to assert dominance.
I was disappointed the tailgunner wouldn't work in the boat. That would have helped a bit, I think. Also, the boat's guns should have been able to track some, not just shoot straight ahead or behind. Still, very exciting video with a few surprises!

Hard to believe an Apache cannot shoot down a 100mph plane!
It's not that it can't, it can. They're just bad at using helicopters. Generally speaking, there's only a handful (if that) of good pilots in their group that are in the videos. That first AH-64 pilot looked as if he was TRYING to screw over his gunner.
Let alone outrun and outmaneuver the whole biplanes and triplane. Given Apache max speed is 300km/hr. It can easily outrun all of them.
An Apache can launch both aim9 and stinger missiles. All that apache needs to do is to hover, then find the plane and then press the button... and kaboom.

See, what you gotta do is get up real high with the helicopters to where you can use your helicopter as a turret while you freefall. All the planes can do is circle around you.

Great battles on this one. Choppers had no chance with Roy Schieder in the seat, you really needed Blue Thunder on this one. Those WW1 birds ate them up 😆with those tiny BB guns.

Rules-- Zeppelin's fight AC-130's and vise versa, Boat Planes fight UH-1H's, and vise versa! However UH-1H's can only attack Zeppelin's with Door Gunner! Boat Planes can only attack AC-130's side with Cannons!

one of the battles at the end had a chopper with 3 human gunners.... even vs the flying boat that identified as a helicopter, the door gunners could barely get a bullet on target.

Yeah, but then you are a static target. And some helos can’t pitch the gun so if the target is too high or low then you can’t hit them anyways.

@@wyattyc9326 Hovering has its disadvantages as well, as the guy above said. Exceed the bank angle to try to hit the planes and you'll stall the helo. Only very few types with door gunners and mobile turrets would be able to hit back a few times.

I'd say the apache would be the best in this scenario since it can track air targets with the 30mm. Instead of having 2 human pilots that don't communicate well have ai gunner and human pilot. Benny Hill would be a good artist for this video. Side note why run from the planes when they can simply hover and get their guns on target. Since they already know they can simply absorb the rounds.
That's what I thought was strange. Why are they trying to dogfight the planes with the helos? Of course that's gonna end in disaster. The first couple of rounds with the Hind were the right idea: get in a position and stay there taking shots at the planes.
@MelodusDethicus They removed all the benefits of having a helicopter. Nose down, gun can't hit the targets. Doing flips and trying to jink that way. Just use your power advantage go straight up together, cover eachother amd when the planes strafe hit them with the much bigger guns. Planes are always most vulnerable in an attack run.

As an American I'd say Britain's finest plane is the spitfire, that's my opinion and my favorite plane of all time with the F14 in a very very close 2nd

this reminds me so much of the swordfish sinking the Bismarck the canon AA of the Bismarck unable to effectively damage the canvas skin of the swordfish they're able to hit but the HE filler is unable to activate on the canvas so the shells passed through relatively easily causing little to no damage
That's what i was thinking. I'm not sure how DCS models it, but I doubt canvas would detonate the shells, and the airframe probably wouldn't propagate the damage as far in WWI craft, so they might keep flying in rags for a while.

That was something less than exciting. I fully expected it to be a turkey shoot with the helos destroying the bi and triplanes. Maybe your helo pilots need some practice or something. I expected at least one helo to hide waiting for a biplane to come sauntering by and the helo blast him right in the face. Oh well, maybe next time. Keep up the good work. I like it.

Seems the Apache is modeled far too heavy in the game. In the scenario you were in you shouldn't be flying all over the place stick right in with the building, don't need those radical maneuvers, move slower if at all, which will also make the guns much more effective on target. Also it seemed like the look down shoot down wasn't working or being used. If the choppers are going to try and dog fight, I only saw one RTT by an attack helo throughout all the sims you did.
As I binge wacth this weekend, this has to be my favorite episode I've watched so far!
Great video and I loved this concept, and it shows you how dominate a piston engine aircraft icould be against helicopters, if they have big enough guns. Until.the Sa342 misses came out.
Yes, the WWI aircraft did had SFM over the helicopters, how the aircraft with tatics on display, these old aircraft did much better than I thought they would.

Should have set this in Normandy for that WWI flavor. The S.E. Va was that fastest WWI fighter. No. 56 Squadron flew them. Werner Voss fought six of them and held them off for ten minutes before being shot down. The fight between No. 56 Squadron and Werner Voss, who flew a Fokker DR.1, is one of my favorite stories from WWI. The other is Ernst Udet versus George Guynemer. Those two fought until Ernst's guns jammed. At which point Guynemer let him go with a wave.

That Camel sounds like an old mower that was left on my property when I bought this old house... it is a 1950's something Ryobi push thing that's 32% rust that chokes on having to cut more than 3/4 inch of grass... it's not even one horsepower, it's more like one sickly old Shetland pony with a scoffed hoof and lame hind leg horsepower. There's a cord you have to wind around a spindle to pull (which was missing, I use some old static line) and the throttle is either OFF or ON so yea, pretty much a Camel. They sound exactly the same!
Can't wait to see the WW2 vs helo's vid... that should be a bit fairer than an aircraft where your only chance is to scream "BANZAI!" and go "Fox-4"

The Official Simba Fan Club performed a small interal ballot and found if our members were to go outside today and look to see this fight happening 78.3 % would NOT be suprised after the events of the last 3 years and 22.4 % said they would cheer for the WW1 planes.
