I would add a metal plate with the appropriate hole size to the wooden entrance as predator birds often peck away at the opening to gain access to the chicks. I have recently set up a couple of Hedgehog houses plus a feeding station using eufy wireless security cameras. Video is 2K and stored locally without needing to access the cloud. Next project is to update my bird box camera that uses a shop bought nest box £12 and a Blink battery powered video doorbell looking down into the nest. It is triggered whenever a bird leaves or enters. I will use a eufy wireless doorbell as that gives all the detection features and 2k video. Just need to wait for the next eufy sale before I purchase. The video from the Hedgehog house is outstanding, I even had a visit from the local Hedgehog resue centre to take a look at the setup.
Thanks for the tip. I have been investigating how to make a hedgehog house actually - there's a family of hedgehogs who live in and around our garden and have done for about 6-7 years. Would be great if they could nest somewhere I can keep an eye on them!
respect to you into about buying it yourselve... I do wish most reviewers actually bought the stuff themselves (idealistic), but YT used to be mostly normal people sharing what they had bought, was much better. was hoping this was an older video, so there might already be an update ? Now you've got me interested is there isn't a local/DIY alternative.
There's always a DIY alternative. Get a weatherproof camera, stick it in a normal birdhouse. The thing with this one though is it's all ready to go, much easier, but you pay for that of course. It would be impossible to run this channel like it is if I had to buy everything - I do rely on companies sending me products to review, but I do pick and choose them carefully. That means they'll usually end up being positive reviews because I have declined the products that I don't think will be suitable, but it does create a bit of a bias. Double-edged sword if you like!
@@SpeakToTheGeekTech Yep it does look nice... I think I'll go for a bird feeder instead, this seems the best available... ideas for yourself if you want to add one Camojojo Hibird Bird House Camera...
1:13 kudos for that stance. Really, the review was very positive! Wouldn't the poor birds be kept awake at night with the white LED's glaring over them. Why not IR LED's? Pity they didn't include a little hood over the hole to stop driving rain going into the box! Also need a smaller hole 4:57 , as predating birds could, get in there and attack song birds. The birds using the box may prefer to have a little stick (think branch) sticking out below the hole so they can perch before going in. Would be worth researching that.
I'm not a bird expert by any measure so I'm not sure whether the always-on LEDs disturb them or not. I can only assume they are ok? My thoughts are IR LEDS would have been better but I hope Birdfy know what they're doing. I have an option of fitting a smaller guard but chose the middle sized one based on the size of birds around here. Getting a lot of interest from starlings and even a blue tit.
It's certainly not cheap! (all puns accepted). The motion detection works in a different way to a regular security camera so whilst I think you can pay for the storage plan for motion detected events, I haven't tried that. By default it only records a daily event under 'prelude' and then will record when it thinks it sees birds. If you want a live view of a location then it's great but I wouldn't recommend it as a security camera.
Ha! Well of course, but sometimes you just don't want to be climbing a ladder because you recompiled the software on your ESP32 but accidentally disabled the Wifi library... so I decided to go off-the-shelf for this one. I am considering a home-made hedgehog house though.
OK this is getting weird now. All your smart tech is near identical to at home setup. The nestify solar panel didn't do a good job keeping the box charged for me, so I had to use some old shed solar panels with a leisure battery and usb charger connected to keep it alive. During the spring we had a sparrow make a home for a week and then gave up. Hoping for a curious reoccoring visiting tit to shelter in winter in the box. Maybe fw updates over the year has fixed this problem along with WiFi cut out issues. That was annoying to fix when I needed to climb a 5m tree to reach it.
Haha great minds! No Wifi issues at all for me, but I have an Eero node inside the garage that it's attached to. The solar panel is right next to my main home solar panels facing the same direction so about as optimal as it gets - it's kept it charged over summer (I've had this about 2 months now, such is the delay in me publishing!), but Winter will be the real test. Absolutely not a sniff of interest from birds yet though :(
@@SpeakToTheGeekTech it's very exciting when a birb arrives, brilliant picture quality too. It's been 6 months and the nice bamboo finish is showing signs on weathering. Who knows, once it's blended in with the tree colour maybe the birbs will see it as a safer space. The bird feeder is also a great product in the netvue birdify range. Nighttime visitors like cats / squirrels / rats mix up the usual Robin, tits and sparrows
Appreciate the independent review, thanks!
Thank you so much!

I thought it might be a "cheap" alternative to an outdoor security cam. Had £85 off voucher at Amazon at the moment.

And no mention if it works in home assistant!
That's because it doesn't :( None of the Netvue products appear to work with Home Assistant anymore although they used to at one point.
@@SpeakToTheGeekTech what about an rtsp stream?
Nope, everything is totally locked down so far as I can tell. No ports open that I can find.
Surely you want the storage done locally and recognition done by Frigate.
I'll get my coat.

Oh I forgot to add, it became a breeding ground for earwigs!! That was our summer activity
