The way they portray PTSD in this film is so painfully accurate. I'm not a vet but I do have PTSD, I've spoken with many vets and we've almost in a way bonded because we suffer almost the exact same way, just from different subject matters. They see warzones, I see operating rooms. I had a botched surgery. But the feeling, that feeling of not being present, the unreality of your surroundings, the way he sits in that chair and his kids are running around playing and he simply sits there staring into the middle distance hearing gunshots as if he never left, physically he's in his living room, but his mind is still there. And he can't snap out of it, he can't escape it, it brings me to tears. Because that is EXACTLY how it feels. I once spoke with a veteran, a great man, he lost his leg during a training exercise in Haiti training other soldiers, he was some higher rank but I don't remember quite what. He served in the Middle East, and then went on to train other soldiers. In Haiti, he stepped on an old land mine that was buried god knows how long ago that no one knew about. He made it out of a warzone only to have that happen to him. He fell down into a bottle for almost a decade and climbed his way out. And I spoke with this man for almost an hour, and when I told him what I was experiencing and what happened to me, at 22 years old, this man who saw horrors beyond my comprehension, who lost a limb, told me that *I* was brave. That I was strong. And that my pain was just as valid as his own. And to never give up. I will never forget that for as long as I live. In comparison what i went through was NOTHING to what he went through, but it isn't what happened to you, it's the disorder and the way you suffer that matters, and we saw each other that day. I saw myself in him, and I think he saw himself in me. PTSD is a very, very unique disorder that it seems only those who suffer from it truly understand, but if you have it, it seems the reason why doesn't matter. We all simply understand, we all feel the same things, suffer the same way, and we recognize it. So whether you're a vet, or a victim of some sort of assault, a near deadly car crash, or any other life threatening or life altering event, the pain is the same. For those of you that also suffer, I want you to remember the man I spoke to. Because if anyone EVER tells you your suffering is not as bad or not as important as someone else's, remember him. Remember what he told me and what I am telling you now. Pain is relative, if you are suffering you are suffering, plain and simple. And any sufferer of this condition will tell you the same. You can make it through this, you can live, you can survive, you can thrive, and you can find peace.
I feel ya, ex Corrections Officer and have PTSD from a serious assault. Disassociation is pretty freaky. I had EMDR therapy and it helped a lot, I still have the odd blip but dealing with residual anxiety and depression as well. Most people think it's just in your head (well medically it is lol), but PTSD actually changes the biology of the brain, a lot of people will never understand. Keep on keeping on :)

@@alistairclifton1286 I'm really happy to hear the EMDR helped you my friend. I also struggle with depression and anxiety so I know where you're coming from. I'm a psych major and I plan to be a counselor and probably to specialize in trauma therapy so you're absolutely spot on. It physically alters the structure of your brain and also affects your entire nervous system which thereby affects your entire body, all of your muscles, your organs, everything. So it isn't just in your head, it's a serious physical illness as well as a mental one, and anyone who says "it's all in your head" is not only full of shit but also just lacks empathy. Never listen to those people, you'll make it, so will I, we all will. One day at a time. Good luck brother.

On your question as to why someone feels the need to serve:
There was a study done by both the US and UK militaries where they decided to see who the likeliest people to go rushing into danger/sacrifice for others/kill another person are. They found that by and far, the largest demographic who do that are people who were the oldest sibling in a family and the parents were unreliable for whatever reason. That "big brother" instinct
It always blows my mind when a veteran can survive war but gets killed by someone when they come home. So heartbreaking thinking of the relief loved ones feel knowing they made it home safe and then it’s snatched away smh.
Right, especially in his case being that it was someone he was trying to help with their own ptsd.

Ending explanation:
He had a neeting a veteran in 4 minutes, a veteran with PTSD he's was going to help. Chris took him down to a gun range, where the veteran shot and killed Chris. Chris was killed while this movie was in production.

@Jo Lane that was literally what the program was lol. It's to help the vets disassociate gun fire and loud noises with death, and instead associate it with good times. Helps them know they're not alone going through it. What happened is tragic but it's not his fault it happened.
I consider myself an old man now. But I joined the US Navy because America gave my family a better life. Immigrant family from the Philippines, my parents came for a better life. America gave them the chance to get that better life. Provide my parents the opportunity to give my brother and myself a life they only dreamed of. For that, my parents taught us to never take for granted what America gave us. To give back if we could. My dad cried when he saw both his sons in uniform. My mom, I only saw pride in her eyes. While others around my family looked down on the military, my parents only saw appreciation.
To me, that’s why many choose to serve and potentially put their lives in harm’s way. To protect a nation that might not necessarily appreciate the duty they choose to honor.
saddest end credits I've ever experienced in a theatre.
The whole entire theater did not make a single sound, and nobody moved until the end credits were finished. It was unreal.
I know I’m late, but i joined because my dad did 20 in the Air Force. It was a good life, good career. I didn’t have any direction with college or work, i wanted to travel, and it pays for school healthcare. I joined the air force 2019, coming up on 5 years I’ve been in and it lead me to meet my wife. Living in Korea. Wouldn’t change a thing. There was a feeling too growing up with a dad in the military, witnessing 9/11(my dad was in New York across the street when the planes hit, there’s even an interview of him if you care to listen i can link) to serve. It’s given me a purpose and helped me figure my life out. It’s not for everyone and i understand the feelings people have about the military. I take no hard feelings for it i just work on planes. But i know what that can lead to, and i respect people that can do these combat roles because couldn’t be me.

Chris Kyle was kind of a nut job imo, and this movie to me has always felt like very strong American War on Terror propaganda. Dude said in his book he sniped 30 people for looting during Hurricane Katrina from the top of the Mercedes Benz arena lol. and that also he was robbed at gunpoint and shot 2 people dead with no record of the incident. and that he punched out a senator for shit talking him

I joined at 25. I graduated with 2 degrees. and went to boot camp 6 months later. I enlisted and am happy I did it. 5 years USMC. I'm now 36.
It’s a good movie, but it’s important to remember that it is pure propaganda and an attempt for Kyle to rehabilitate his image. He had some very questionable and troubling behavior in both Iraq as well as in New Orleans during Katrina.
All that aside, I enjoyed the movie, I just wish they didn’t “cowboy up” the climax of the movie. He did enough verifiable things that were pretty amazing that they didn’t have to make things up to make it bigger than it really was.

*Chris Kyle’s Untimely Death:*
Kyle, 38, and his friend Chad Littlefield, 35, were both shot and killed on Feb. 2, 2013 at a Texas gun range by former Marine Eddie Ray Routh, who was later convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Kyle, Littlefield and Routh were all together when they arrived at a shooting range at Rough Creek Lodge and Resort, located about 70 miles southwest of Fort Worth, Texas. Family members said Routh suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder from serving in Iraq and in Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake, and Routh’s mother had asked Kyle to help her troubled son.
During Routh’s trial, Kyle’s widow, Taya Kyle, testified that Littlefield and her husband were close, and enjoyed spending time with veterans as a way to help them ease back into civilian life. She detailed her husband’s own struggles after completing four tours of duty in Iraq, saying he also suffered from PTSD, could be irritable at times and was slowed by physical ailments.
During the trial, attorneys said Kyle described Routh as "straight-up nuts" in a text message to Littlefield as they drove to the resort.
An employee of the resort discovered the bodies of Kyle and Littlefield, and each had been shot several times. Authorities said Routh fled the range in Kyle’s truck to his sister’s home, where he told her he had killed two people and was later arrested.
Chris Kyle had already written his bestselling autobiography, _"American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History."_ Published in 2012, the book appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list for 37 weeks.

I hope you explore more Clint Eastwood films. He's arguably one of the most successful people in Hollywood history. He has a long established great career as an actor yet also established himself as one of the best American directors of all time. It seems like almost every film he directs gets nominated for awards at the end of the year. Eastwood is a master at the topic you're exploring right now. A great example of it is his film "Unforgiven"; which is god tier at production design, setting, locations, etc.

The first movie that actually made me cry. I will always remember thia movie because it was the first time i went alone to the cinema and watch a movie in original version with english subtitles (im french btw) and i felt so much more into the story and i remember crying at the end because the story was tragic as f
THANK YOU for bringing up Medal of Honor. SUCH an underrated game series, especially the modern titles. They should restart that series.
The PTSD in this film is the most accurate representation I've ever seen in a film. Sometimes I feel like I'm starring at myself. And I loved the sandstorm scene. You were looking for what the significance was behind that scene. You also noted he left his rifle there. The rifle was never lost. Unfortunately it was auctioned off and Chris's wife paid 50 grand to get it back. But that sandstorm more or less meant he laid down his rifle and finally quit, went home. As a retiring boxer leaves his gloves in the center of the ring. This was an amazing film

Someone anyone PLEASE make a movie of Léo Major a Canadian war hero from WW2 and the Korean war. He liberated a whole town by himself.
@@KSDVLmom That's a fantastic recommendation. Not only is it a great movie, based on a true story, and part of Oliver Stone's informal trilogy on the Vietnam War (the other two movies being Platoon, and Heaven and Earth), but I still think it's the best performance by Tom Cruise, ever.
They train you how to turn it on, but not how to turn it off.
Do you really want to know why? If so, go watch the beginning to just about every interview Shawn Ryan has done with operators of all kinds. They go through their entire story, including why they joined.
They said that the only reason Kyle was able to find the enemy sniper was due to the glint of the sun off his scope. Said the standoff happened over 24 hours between the two, but that's how he found em.
Technically the movie it's ok I guess, but the story is... controversial and tarnishes it for me. Lone Survivor is a lot better and Marcus Lutrell (I think that's his name) seems like a decent human being.
Edit: and I think Lone Survivor demonstrates the warrior mentality of "you fight for the man next to you". I'm paraphrasing it, but that is something I've always admired about these men who put themselves in harms way. And in a fascinating way it can be love that pushes you to fight in a war. Love for your brothers in arms and your unit. Then there is the shame, which is a big part of the male psyche. To some men the shame of not showing courage when facing danger is more unbearable than the fear of pain and death.

Yes it’s a true story (Chris Kyle ) he was shot in the back of the head by a veteran he was helping and he had a Heavy PTSD episode of wat they say is “Pig-men” was wat he was seeing man I remember this was being made an he was helping make the scenes 🎬 the movie almost was done just a couple more scenes an editing and it was a wrap an then on the news they said he was killed I was like noooo shot he got assassinated on US soil by terrorist (because of the big price on his head set by terrorist ) but then the full story came out and I was heart broken 💔😢😭 still makes me fuckin cry till this day

I served US Army from 08-12. That about sums it up. Everyone has their reasons for joining. Some are patriotic, some are court ordered, some had no better options. But, when shit hits the fan, it's about your brothers to your left and right.

There was a huge spike in enlistment when 9/11 happened, of all races. He was raised in an era in which civil duty was really extolled as a great value. His character was always just to do what was needed of him
DUDE, youre talking about Medal of Honor 2010, the DICE game with awesome multiplayer. One of the greatest FPS games of all time and very underrated.
Fantastic movie. As for the impact of location: I think that scene in the supermarkt really drove that point home. That mundane overabundance of food where the hardest decision to make is if you take the fat free milk or not, contrasted with the harsh warzone environment. It's understandable why he kept going back for more tours.
So Taya Kyle, Chris Kyle's wife said in an interview it felt like Bradley Cooper gave her husband back to her for a brief time because he looked and acted like Chris.
Current active duty Army with one deployment to Afghanistan. You asked about what drives people to serve? I remember always being drawn to the military and telling my parents that I was going to be a soldier when I was ten. Also, when you go to wart torn third world countries your appreciation for America, even with all it's fault, grows exponentially. At the end of the day, if you weren't called to be a warrior you'll never fully get why others put themselves in harms way for the betterment of others.
It would be great if you would watch The Drop. Tom Hardy James Gandolfini. Totaly up your ally. Nobody has a reaction. The film is incredible.
You skipped over a huge part when he calls his wife from on top of the building at the end.... it really shows his emotions and character complexity which i think you didnt notice.

It sucks that the movie never cleared the story up. Chris and a friend were going to help another friend with PTSD. That guy had been also smoking weed and becoming increasingly more paranoid. When they were in Chris's truck driving to the range, the guy said later in an interview that he thought they were going to take him to the range to off him. He justified the belief because they didn't say a word to him on the whole trip up there, and *I think* were texting each other back and forth to be discreet in front of the guy. When they got to the range and had fired a series of shots, they went to go check out how they did. The guy was following behind and shot both of them to death on a whim. He took the truck back and actually bragged to somebody back home that he had taken some dead guy's truck, or had taken a truck of a guy he killed. He was insane. He's still serving in prison as far as I know.
As a movie, it's pretty great, as far as telling a true story, it stinks. It made a cold-blooded killer and a liar into a hero.
Never let the truth get in the way of a good story
If you hadnt heard any of the story, Chris Kyle was a sort of self-aggrandizing, reactionary figure whose book and this film contained a number of half-truths & inaccuracies (e.g. he did not snipe that sniper, he took credit for something he didnt do to build his legend). He was not a humble man. The film takes a more personal, contemplative & respectful view but follows the biopic trend of including the tall tales for drama's sake.
Kyle, along with his friend Chad Littlefield, tried to help veterans readjust to civilian life with perhaps misguided trips to a shooting range, and they were both killed in cold blood on one of these trips on the shooting range by a paranoid schizophrenic veteran who had been misdiagnosed as just having PTSD. They were both armed but never had a chance to defend themselves, suffering multiple fatal wounds fired from Kyle's own guns, bc that is how gun violence works.
Chris Kyle being a famous 'war hero' (in a violent occupation of another country based on deception, but that's not veterans' fault), Texas being Texas, and the US court system being the US court system, this dangerously mentally ill man was accused by prosecutors of faking it, despite having no rational motive whatsoever and a history of paranoid delusions. He was convicted to spend the rest of his life as a danger to inmates, guards and himself in regular prison without treatment, as so many mentally ill people are in the United States after never being diagnosed or treated and often left to deal with the courts & prison system.
The system failed at every step. An extremely mentally ill man was not diagnosed by the VA and his mental state deteriorated until he killed two other veterans who were offering their support, for no reason. The courts then denied that he was mentally ill to secure a conviction. Nothing was learned or gained, and lives were lost.
A typical SEAL coffin has 10-12 emblems pressed into it. Chris Kyle's had over 100.
I enlisted late at 26, to the Air Force, but specifically because I knew getting ACTUAL combat jobs were low. I had already seen friends who joined the Army who were all about violence until it actually happened and they are not the same now.
My job was aircraft maintenance (C130s and UH60s) so if someone like ME has to pick up a weapon, that's not good.
I saw this when I was stationed in Okinawa and I also was not aware on Chris Kyle's final days. Just dead silence in the theater.

As soon as I saw dude at the door I knew something stupid was gonna happen. I've never left a theater that was so quiet at the end of a movie. It was as if we were leaving the funeral ourselves.
True stories don’t always have a happy ending
It’s a terribly great story. So many good young men deleted in the name of politics and religion.

7:37 the question being asked is extremely complicated to answer. That question could be asked for many professions that require someone to put their life on the line for the "greater good". I imagine people who are EMT's and Fire Fighters have a similar mentality as people joining the military for the purpose of serving the greater good.
Such a tragic ending to his life. I’ll never get over how someone can endure and survive what he and his SEAL platoon did in Iraq during the height of the conflict in Ramadi just to be gunned down as a civilian in the states trying to help a fellow veteran.
I was so crushed when I discovered at the end that Chris Kyle was killed by a veteran. Horrible

This film was based upon a well known liar and murderer of his friend and fellow military man (let alone random civilians of other nations in the war).
Wish Bradley Cooper had not tainted his career with this p.o.s. person he portrayed, even though he played the fictionalized version of him.

Lone Survivor is another banger about the worst loss of SEALs ever. 19 Americans loss their lives in the mountains far from home
Survivors guilt is a real thing, I like that they stay true to that reality.

There’s not much more to it than that for some of us. I grew up traveling countries, starting in Japan, then Mexico, and then finally the United States. Having spent time in those countries, I can say that it is my opinion that the US is in fact the greatest country in the world. That was further confirmed in my time in the Middle East. For God, for country, and for those I love, I will do unspeakable things.

Hot Take: Chris was a great soldier, but he wasn't a great family man. When you have a newborn child and a struggling wife, you should do everything in your power to help them specifically. Being on the other side of the country is the worst thing you can do.

I'm probably going to get bombarded but I'm honestly sick and tired of the old "poor american soldier killed many in an illegal / war of interest and now he's sad because of all the things he saw. ( i know it's based on a very skewed true story). The last american war movie I appreciated was Green Zone, at least showing the reality of what the "righteous" allies have been doing more recently.

Protecting his brothers in the field, that is all that matters to him. Ask any of the people's lives he saved they can tell you why he is there. Chris Kyle was very real! An American hero.
He is also a liar and said lots of ignorant crap, but he was A soldier so that’s what mattered to him and the soldiers around him. That’s how humanity is often.

It's based on actual events but Kyle wasn't the greatest guy once people started diggin into him.
Regarding his death, I remember hearing about it back when it happened. I believe it was a guy he was taking out to the range that shot him and another guy there if I'm not mistaken. I forget if there was a motive or just mental illness.
I read that it was execution style too, Chris tied to a chair and everything.
Definitely mental illness, the guy got it into his head that Chris and the other man were planning to kill him, iirc.
it wasnt mental illness..dude was on drugs and he did it out of jealously ....shot both chris and chris friend and took chris truck.. dude deserve to rot in prison and should not be called a veteran he lost that title
I actually enjoyed your reaction to this not knowing that it's a true story. The real life wife actually broke down because Bradley Cooper portrayed her husband's demeanors and inflections too well. He transformed himself into the guy to honor his story. Really awe inspiring dedication from both Chris Kyle and Bradley Cooper. In their own ways of course.
Great movie! Although I don’t agree with all the things Chris Kyle had said and don’t agree with the war he was over there fighting. He served our county and I will never fault someone for doing that. It is sad what happened to him. We need more help for the mental health of our veterans and our country as a whole. Also gun law reform!
