    Hi James, I was an extra on this film, which was shot back in back in 2001, and released in 2002. (I was just one of the random faces in the crowd.) There's a lot of facts about the making of this that I want to you to be aware of. I got to know a few of the PA's and crew. and I was close enough to the phone booth to hear the louder dialog.
    1. The movie was filmed in downtown Los Angeles.
    2. It was filmed sequentially from page 1 to the end, in order. (except for the 2nd unit shots in the beginning that were shot in New York.)
    3. The entire film was shot in only 9 days in LA.
    4. The breakdown scene by Collin Farrell was a rehearsal take that the director used because it was 75% improvised. (And imo, I think he made the right choice.)
    5. The final scene when the shooter talks to Stu in the ambulance, I'm surprised you didn't recognize him. The shooter was Kieffer Sutherland.
    I've been waiting a long time for someone to review this movie, and I'm glad it was you. Having been there all 9 days, I guess I'm a little bias about this one. It was truly one of the best experiences of my life. I loved your reaction. Thanks.

      Completely agree so underrated and for some reason just overlooked or ignored at the time ,Idk why maybe it was considering there wasn't much comparison at the time, nowadays these ,someone picks up a phone and a random person starts giving them instructions are ten to a penny, but at the time it was quite different and it shot so well it makes you feel like you are in New York watching this up close and personal , I love this film and think it it is a forgotten gem definitely

      Interestingly, the movie was filmed with actor Ron Eldard (Black Hawk Down) cast as the sniper, but Joel Schumacher decided he didn't have the right voice. So he brought in Kiefer Sutherland (who had already been in three other Schumacher movies) and re-recorded everything with his voice, and re-shot the final scene with Sutherland. Nothing against Eldard, who's a good actor, but he made the right choice, because Sutherland was perfect for this role.

    • @xandra_5099
      @xandra_5099 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @jculver1674 there's something about his voice, especially in this movie, that makes it so soothing yet so diabolical at the same time! That's why it makes so much more sense he chose Keifer. Very cool

    Fun Fact: the original concept of this film, one centered around a character at a phone booth for the duration of the film, was first brought to Alfred Hitchcock. He loved the idea, but neither he, nor the writer, could think of a good reason as to why the character would be at a phone booth for the whole film. Not until decades later, which is what lead to the movie you just reacted to.

    Phone Booth is an underrated gem! I'll say this about Colin Farrell: I wasn't sure about him as an actor until I saw him in this. The range he shows here is a great indicator of what was to come in films such as Banshees of Inisherin. He's terrific! I think the frustration you felt was intentional, the movie presents a scary and frustrating situation to the main character, he's stuck in that booth, and his agency has been taken away.

  • @dante340
    @dante340 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Fun fact: The film is set in New York, but (minus a few establishing shots) the majority of the story and phone booth sequences were actually filmed in Downtown Los Angeles lol

    I have a hunch the red dot wasn't in the original script, but was added digitally by the studio in postproduction because they were afraid it wasn't clear enough who the sniper was aiming at in certain scenes. It's just a theory, but it explains why no one seems to notice it. Plus, the idea of a laser sight painting a visible red dot on its target is largely Hollywood invention, not based on how real guns work.

    This movie is probably the best of the "Person w/phone in dangerous situation" mini-genre of the early 00's. The guy who wrote this movie also wrote the script for 2004's "Cellular". This and Arlington Road are two of my favorite thrillers from the late 90s/early 00s that somehow drifted into obscurity. Colin Farrell is amazing. I love that this film is so short. If you can get the job done in 80 minutes, then do it in 80 minutes. Nothing more frustrating than a bunch of filler to pad a movie out to 120 minutes when you don’t need it.

Though it's no less compelling. Shout out to Robert Redford for making that work so well. For aspiring screenwriters the script is worth checking out just to compare with other scripts. For a film that is a little bit like this:
    -'Taking Of Pelham 123' (1974 version). A group of criminals take a subway train hostage, so it's another film with a claustrophobic feel that takes place in a small number of locations. It was also cited by Quentin Tarantino and Chris MacQuarrie as a film that inspired them
    As for Colin Farrell, for me his best performance is in 'In Bruges', but this is a close contender

    I was 9 when this came out, and really wanted to watch it for some reason. 😂 My cousins came over to the crib and we rented this, and bringing down the house 😭🤣 This shit is intense!

    I think they were going for a similar shock value of the reveal of John Doe in Seven with this movie. Both villian actors were kinda big at the time, I guess? I mean, I was like "Oh shit, Kieffer Sutherland!?" But I dunno that had the same impact as the former.

    Watching back with you here I had a lot of fun!
    And indeed, the acting is incredible!

    For some reason..I rarely see reactions to these good underrated movies, everyone wants to watch the same thing..however this is one of Colin Ferrell's best films, it really was the first time I was introduced to him.

    “Breakdown” starting Kurt Russell. “Soldier” Starring Kurt Russell. Both very underrated.

    This movie can easily get overlooked as a fun but dumb cheesy movie. Whoch is whybi think it gets overlooked a lot.
    But actually giving it a closer look its a very well constructed and well written movie that deserves a lot more attention.
    Also side note a lot of kinda the multiscreen camara shots is inspired by the show 24

    At 4:48 in this reaction, the pizza guy is sent away. Before leaving he glances up - same direction as the shooter. Pizza Guy is a victim all along, maybe was getting released if only Colin had accepted the pizza?

    Buried (2010) and The Guilty (either the 2018 danish original or the not quite as good 2021 American version) would interesting movies for you to watch after this. Both have a similar use of location - hopefully not a spoiler :)

      Speaking of movies taking place in one location, Polanski's Carnage is also a good one.

    I enjoyed this, but ...... wondered if this was a remake of a Spanish short film classic, La cabina. It was not, but maybe inspired by it, and I sooooo recommend that film.
    The film is 95% silent film so need to worry about Spanish, made in the late 60s/early 70s, I think. What a film! Never forgotten it since seeing it very late night as a kid. Won't give it away, but WHAT an ending! and you can get it on TH-cam. Did I mention? WHAT an ending!

    I guess my only "complaint" is that Kiefers voice is so distinct so you alresdy know who the caller is (unless you didnt know who he was already).
    Idk if they could've disguised it more, but it kinda took away the mystery, to me. Granted I only saw this just the one time. Still a good movie though!
