  • The Cliff May Rancho Estates, 1954. When you think of California and its rich history of Architecture you may think of Joseph Eihler, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, Gregory Ain however not many people think of Cliff May. With only a few tracts by May there's no wonder why some folks dont know about him but Vinny and Amy knew exactly what they were getting back in 2019 when they purchased their home. Far from an ideal and traditional Cliff May Rancho they saw what others couldn't, Lots of sleepless nights and months of hard work to get the home up to snuff but they are finally able to call this home. The 700+ home tract in Long Beach is one of the biggest Cliff May tracts and one with such a tight community of enthusiasts that in the past 10 years has seen a renaissance of new owners coming in to preserve these homes and that's exactly what Vinny and Amy did.

    I live in this neighborhood. One thing he can do when he has the roof redone at some point is to have foam core added before they put on a new roof. It costs extra because the fascia around the perimeter of the house will need to be replaced with wider pieces to now hide the 1 1/2" foam core. It was worth it for the significant drop in temperature as soon as they installed it.

    • @freshtapcoke
      @freshtapcoke 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Plywood with a reflective barrier might be worth looking into as well. A lot of the heat coming in from the roof is radiant heat.

    Actually you are the MOST exciting person to talk about these houses. Why? Because you ARE actually excited about it. It always amazes me how morose and sad most architects sound on these videos. I guess it is part of the culture but if it was me putting together a house like this I too would be as excited as you are. Cheers 🥂!!

    If you're not from Long Beach, you may not know the area he's in. But there's some real mid-century modern gems on that end of the city that haven't all been renovated into HGTV junk. Super cool to see that someone in the car space took a similar approach to rebuilding a home like this one and still maintaining why people would want a home like this in the first place.

    I keep coming back to this piece. It just gives an awesome feeling that I can't really pinpoint. Perhaps it is accessible - Vin comes across very humble and self-deprecating. He acknowledges he doesn't know what exactly makes it all work so nicely, but his eye for detail works with the modernist principles perfectly. I feel like this is a house that gets lived in and I can imagine some good late night chats happening at that outdoor area. Love the garage and love the street presentation too. Enjoying the vids with car fans - really satisfying.

    The Cliff May Rancho Estates, 1954.
    When you think of California and its rich history of architecture, you may think of: Joseph Eichler, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, or Gregory Ain, to name a few. However, not many people think of Cliff May- with only a few tracts developed under his career, there’s no wonder why some folks aren’t aware of his rich contributions to California midcentury-modernism. The 700+ home tract of Rancho Estates in Long Beach is one of the biggest Cliff May tracts, and one with such a tight community of enthusiasts, that in the past 10 years, a renaissance of new owners have come in to preserve these homes- and that’s exactly what Vinny and Amy did.
    Unlike most others, Vinny and Amy knew exactly what they were getting when they purchased their home back in 2019. Far from an ideal and traditional Cliff May home, they saw what others couldn’t despite the home’s numerous renovations and uncharacteristic presence in the neighborhood. And now, after spending many sleepless nights and months of hard work to get this home up to snuff, they’re finally able to call this place home.
    everything else about the video is great quality, but the grammar in the description really wasn’t really up to par with the rest. kind of took me out of the fantasy and made the work presented seem more like an amateur operation, if you get me. so here’s my attempt at revising the description to better reflect the otherwise fantastic work you’re doing! i hope i’m not being too pretentious lmao. oh well if i am, it needs to be said if you’re serious about your craft. and if you are, i hope you receive this message well haha. with love, someone who wants to see this channel succeed!!

    In palm springs this style is called Alexandrian - after the developer. I grew up in Orange Ca in this same style, exposed underside of roof, window arches, no ac, wall heater in the center hallway. But we had the pool = loved the pool. Shoot on our block I could count 10 pools. My neighbor was an original buyer in 1955 - she paid $5000.00, 3br, 2 bath - Mrs. Dirking. now there close to a mill for a 1200 sf home on 3600 sf lot. Cheers. Thanks for sharing your story bro,

    I’ve owned and lived in a larger Cliff May in Thousand Oaks for the last 20 years. It was in bad bad shape when we bought it but it was such a cool house that we couldn’t pass it up. Unfortunately, we didn’t realize all the work we needed to put into it and while it is a great conversation piece and the indoor/outdoor living aspect and overall vibe are awesome, I don’t think I would do it again. Just not worth being able to talk about how cool your house is when nobody really cares. They are not very practical from a comfortable living standpoint and are very hard to cool and heat. Putting solar on the roof helped so at least when it’s hot 3 months out of the year we can run the AC all day to keep it somewhat comfortable and it won’t cost a lot. We will be putting mini splits in soon because standard central AC just doesn’t cut it. There’s no workaround for heating it though. It’s expensive and because of the floor to ceiling windows that make up the entire back wall of the house it’s extremely inefficient. We actually built an addition onto the main house to make it more comfortable while keeping the main house as it was intended to be. Still, I’ve gotta say, when people walk in it takes their breath away.

A couple years later a beautiful window took it place but I couldn’t stand the unit. Would rather look at my wall patch. And in the end setting a goal and focus on that goal.

    Love the house and the fact Vin's a car guy. This is the second or third video I've watched of cool MCM homes in the SoCal area that have a backdrop of the most wretchedly ugly transmission towers that look like they're in the backyard. For a State that loves nothing more than virtue signalling how they impose an oppressive, costly, and mindless bureaucracy upon property owners, its shocking to see them allow those mega EMF emitting, cancer causing towers so close to peple's homes. Love your home and your cars, Vin, but dont stay too long. Oh, and keep up the good work, State of California.

    As a LB resident, The homes and architecture were based on post WW2 futurist but simple Cottage style homes. They are still a big deal throughout long beach and you drive around the older neighborhoods you still find them. They really are basic in amenities but that also in the Socal we don't really need to worry about running AC hard until peak summer otherwise its off and we don't run heating hard til peak winter otherwise its off. But infrastructure in LB is taking a turn for the worse IMO.
