How to Not Stall a Manual Car - Clutch Control Tips and Tricks

  • Stalling your car, whether it's petrol or diesel, is a concern that almost every new or young driver has when they're first learning to drive, about to take their test or even if they're a little rusty after not driving for a while.
    The main ideas with clutch control are patience and sensitivity. When you set the throttle at a certain RPM you'll want to hold the biting point of the clutch and wait until you feel your car moving before releasing the clutch completely!
    Good luck on your journey of learning to drive, drive safe!
    Cheers,
    Alex.

    I was taught diesel, I pretty much never stalled and I was more or less a confident driver. My first car was a petrol, and the second time driving it I was at a junction with a pretty steep slope and a pissed off taxi driver beeping his horn constantly behind me. After around my 5th stall he finally went to go around me and as he passed he shouted "learn how to fucking drive". It was a pretty traumatic experience to say the least! moral of the story, petrol cars are much harder to master and taxi drivers are bellends😂😂

    Using a manual transmission.
    1. Inertia is your friend.
    2. You're not racing, once you're moving, you have plenty of time to shift.
    3. The hand brake is your friend when learning to hill start.
    4. Engage clutch rapidly, release slowly.
    With practice, your speed will increase and you won't need to use the hand brake for hill starting.
    Hill starting
    1. Engage the hand brake to hold the vehicle. This means you don't have to worry about rapidly moving your right foot from the brake to the accelerator.
    2. Release the foot brake and press on the accelerator.
    3. Slowly release the clutch until you feel the vehicle attempt to move forward
    4. Release the hand brake
    5. Continue to release the clutch and increase the accelerator.
    And as mentioned, with practice, the time it takes from releasing the foot brake to moving forward on a hill start will drop to the point where you won't need to use the hand brake and inertia will be enough to hold the vehicle in place while starting out.

    4:50 This is why I'm thankful for tutorial videos. My parents are both great drivers, but neither one of them told me I wasn't supposed to lift my whole leg when using the clutch, probably because they couldn't see what my leg was doing while they sat in the passenger seat. No wonder I keep stalling so much (besides the fact I've only been practicing a couple days), I'm releasing the clutch too fast.

      bit sometimes if u have a newer car like from 04 and up
      these cars have drive by wire which has a slight delay aftwr u hit the throttle. meaning it will start to move a xouple3secs after pressing gas. so its easy to miss the time and pull off clutch too early thinking the car was gonna move as soon as u hit the gas.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Hi woollen hat - that is a great comment. Yes, too often new drivers feel pressure by other drivers to hurry. As you said, you have to focus on what you're doing, take a breath and make the right choice. Some times that means stopping. And yes, when learning to drive standard you can't always put your heel on the floor. Thus, it's important to isolate the clutch and learn clutch control before adding the throttle. All the best, Cheers Rick

    I had so many issues when I first bought my manual. After a I drove with a good friend I learn a truck that helped me more than anything. KEEP YOUR HEEL TO THE FLOOR. I used to use my entire leg. I didn't have very good control and would stale more often than not. Once I was able to keep my heel to the ground I found I stalled less.

    I can upshift once I’m going and I can slow down/downshift decently but starting without stalling always sucked and even when I got it into first and started moving it was a slow process. Your tip on getting the revs up before the bite point helped out a lot and no other video seemed to mention that. Thanks a lot man!

    Thank you! I love your videos. I have a driving lesson tomorrow so watching your videos is like a last minute prep for me haha. I struggle with this problem and always get scolded by my instructor whenever i stall my car. I find it especially difficult whenever i wanna reverse really really slowly for parallel parking because that's when the car will usually stutter and stall. so hopefully tomorrow I'll do much better. (whenever i get scolded i always wish that i am learning how to ride a horse instead or maybe i should just drive an auto or maybe i shouldn't be such a noob haha)

  • @theWolfXLIV

    Glad you mentioned about petrol vs. diesel in terms of stalling because a lot of driving instructors have a diesel car (eww) for their learners and actually teach them to pull away using no throttle, just feeding the clutch out! Ridiculous really because the learner's first car will almost certainly be a small hatchback with a 1.2 or 1.4 L petrol engine and what's the first thing they're going to do when they pull away? You guessed it, stall and potentially have a crash. Who likes diesel clatter anyway? And the acrid smell from the exhaust.

    • @theWolfXLIV
      @theWolfXLIV 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I kind of disagree there as a self-confessed diesel hater. One reason is that modern diesels of course are equipped with a particulate filter which makes the car only suited to longer journeys, i.e. A-road or motorway driving whereas many people are just popping down to the shops or going a mile or two to work or school every day. This is partly the car sales executive's fault for failing to mention this upon purchase and partly due to the government about 10 years ago (wrongly, in my view) pushing diesel powered cars. Plus the emissions even with the DPF are still bad, although the CO2 emissions and therefore the road tax may trick you into thinking otherwise. Namely NOx emissions

    • @robotraptor3369
      @robotraptor3369 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Yep. im one of those new drivers who has just been taught in a diesel and told not to apply any gas when pulling away or on a hill start. just bought my first car, a petrol, and stalling like crazy, no idea what im doing. nearly had an accident today after stalling on a busy junction. really dangerous for instructors to be teaching people in diesel cars. basically their doing it because its easier and the student is more likely to get a first time pass which great for their driving school but not so good for the new driver who loses control of their new petrol car and ends up in a collision.

      I agree! A few years ago when I was learning, my instructor had a diesel car. Of course, after I passed, I had a petrol and I was so confused and frustrated as to why I was stalling all the time. I felt like an awful driver + the added pressure of stalling in situations where they’re waiting for you. I had to google why it was happening!!!
      A lot of the time it’s because diesels save more fuel because you don’t need as many revs to get it going. That’s why instructors have diesels

    I learned manual and I found matching rev is far more distracting. I think it is better if you get a "feel" for it. Starting off, beginners face problems with the first gear. So when starting off don't let go off your clutch in first gear when accelerating. It will prevent your car from stalling. Then just immediately switch to the second gear. This will cause slight clutch wear, but you will eventually get a hang of it with more experience.

    5:18 there's another driving instructor here on youtube conquer driving teaching the exact opposite. To not use your heel on the floor when handling the clutch because it makes you eventually lose grip of the clutch. I do agree with him on this, using heel off the floor enables you to maintain a good grip on the clutch when pulling it down and up repeadtly.

Then when the traffic is about to turn green, put your foot into the clutch, put it into 1st gear, take off the hand break as you are about to move and slowly take your foot off the clutch. Trust me it will prevent you from stalling at the traffic. That's what I did when I kept on stalling at the traffic. It really helped me

      @@user-lj6jp8qp7z I wouldn't recommend using hand brake for hill starts, your car can move ever so slightly backward even when hand brake is on while on a hill. What I do is I keep my feet on the brake pedal and have a clutch on the spot when lights are about to turn green, then lift the foot from the brake and give a little gas so I get moving. This method cannot be done with low horsepower cars though

    I know one thing that helped me out tremendously was parking in the garage. Because now you're attempting to move forward (or in reverse) but with the restrictions of limited road - somewhat like a traffic jam, but no traffic. Once it dawned to me that I never stalled while doing this is when I realized where the biting point was and I haven't stalled since. That combined with anticipation and keeping your distance forces you to "ease" into the speed instead of the habitual "drive when the next car moves".

    don't really have an issue with stalling or hill starts anymore, thanks to buying my own car and practicing during COVID with my dad just waiting for my new test date now! however I had my first official lesson back and was talking to my instrucor about the whole using your heel as an anchor to find the bite point and that I couldn't do it due to my car having a high bite and the lack of flexibility afforded me at my ankle due to a achilles injury. He showed me another downside to it. when you push your foot down and use the heel as the anchor your foot tends to naturally slide meaning every time you do it your foot is slightly further back on the clutch pedal until you barley have any contact and thus have to re-set your foot. Not saying it is viable as it clearly is as load of people do it but I just find it fascinating how many different ways their are to drive and achieve the same outcome.
