Travis, Thank you!!! I have an 85 Trac that has been sitting for a decade. I watched your video and learned a great deal! I WD-40'd cables & moving parts, and shot a few squirts into the spark plug hole. I then sprayed lithium grease on the chains. I turned the engine over by hand as you had done, then used sand paper on the points. After that I air sprayed and sprayed electric connection cleaner on the points and wire connections. Then I cleaned the carb, and sanded the spark plug. It fired up on the 5th kick! I let it run then adjusted the idle. The best news is I am doing 32mph (I weigh 240)!! So again, thank you very much for this video!!
I finnally fixed the problem. It was tedious. I exposed the whole wiring system. I checked all wires for puncture marks etc. Cleaned all grounds and disconected the taillights. Had a bad connection which inturn burned out the circuit in the connection box. Cleaned and resaltered. Works fine.I changed the design to ensure that it wouldn't happen agin. Thanks alot. You the man....
Thank you, I learned a whole lot watching you go through the steps that I'm taking now with my Tomos A3. First two-stroke, first bike with points. I'm an avid motorcyclist and a home wrench but this older Moped is a great new challenge. Thanks for being so concise and clear for us!
I had one bike that the tank was so rusty on the inside that I just took a plastic gas tank off one of my junk riding mowers and made it work. I used an inline fuel filter and shut off valve. It worked great for years.
Just got my first project 'ped. Even though it's not a Puch this video has been a huge help in knowing what I should check. I know TH-cam comments can be a disaster (though it doesn't look too bad here, guess moped'ers are good peeps) so I wanted to leave a nice comment and tell you how much I appreciate you making this vid!
After watching several of your videos I can proudly say that my 1978 puch maxi is running like a top my kids love it thanks guys. And I would like to mention that it was free because he could not figure out how to make it run!!!!!
Thanks a lot travis, used your video to help start and get running my fathers vintage puch that hasn’t run in 30 years, after following the video it ran perfectly.
Thanks for responding. Looks like I may have do some serious rewiring to do. My bulbs are good. My swithes are cleand and good. Icleaned all ground connections. Checked for pinch points. Everything.... still no luck. Thanks agin. Ill be back at it tomorrow.
Ah bummer, it's nice when the fix is easy. The switches are funny...the test for them is to tape the two connectors going into them together and see if it still dies when you hit the brake lever. Obviously the bike can't be ridden like this for safety reasons/no brake light - but even if the switch contacts are good and clean it could still be bad. Beyond scuffing up the grounds with sandpaper I would also look for a simplified Tomos A3 wiring guide on MopedArmy for when you do go to re-wire, less wiring makes troubleshooting e-z!
same my older brother bought one at an action and gave it to me for a suprise and i've never messed with two strokes so i had no idea what to do with it
I've really been enjoying watching your videos. This one especially was done very professionally for an instructional video done alone. You're very knowledgeable, light up, and you edit them very well. Thank you. 👌😜👍🛵🛵
I got my 1970 moped from an old chicken house from my fathers land and we replaced the engine but when we first looked inside the gas can there wasn’t any liquid at all inside and I was amazed that it didn’t rust through at all

nice video. I have a puch maxi 77' cleaned the carb multiple times (atomizer and jet are clean, banjo etc..) Cleaned spark plug and checked for spark, fuel flow seems to be good, no rust in the tank. Going to clean the points today to see if that helps. Could be a wiring issue?
HI! I purchased an old TOMOS STREET MATE last week (yes, from Craigslist) so I can teach myself how to ride before jumping on my other bikes (Yamaha xs400 maxim n Honda Shadow VT700). (I promised my family I'd practice on something "little"). Before I purchased it, I saw the ex-owner ride the heck out of it, kicked it back and off he went, so I loaded it in the back of my sedan and off "I" went! I don't know crap about bikes and I'd like to get it street ready (registered, insured, etc.) by fixing it myself. This little moped has been "suped up" to a 70cc with a different engine, a fancy muffler and ... it has no odometer (?) It has no KEY. I didn't notice that before I got home (oopsie) It's been jury rigged like crazy, but it works like a charm. It has a new battery, the tires are ok, but it has a mess of wires sticking out of the oddest places all jumbled together and placed together with plastic ties. So, where do I start? I'd like to do the work myself given I paid two cents for it. I don't want to start throwing money into it. I'm pretty good with electricity, mechanics and I'm not afraid to get dirty. I cannot tell what year it is cuz the VIN is covered right now by a junk load of jury-rigged wires. I can send you pictures, etc. My question is ... where do I start, what do you suggest and thank you, thank you, thank you for any advice. JG
+Janet Grace-Alvarado It sounds like you're off to a pretty good start. That Tomos will have an A55 engine, year will be 2005+. My understanding is the wiring for A55 motors was borrowed from some Chinese scooter and has a lot of extra wires from the factory. If someone has messed with it even further, but everything works (lights, turn signals, horn, etc) I would recommend leaving it. Myrons has a great guide to modern Tomos electrical linked below: www.myronsmopeds.com/category/service/new-tomos-electrical/ The trouble with buying modified mopeds is that most people don't take the time to property tune after installing a 70 kit. If the previous owner didn't reject the carb there is a danger of it seizing from getting too hot. If you only bought it to get comfortable on two wheels, then it's whatever, but if you plan on riding it as a real form of transportation it'd be worth it to read up on performance tuning since modifying a moped from stock has a lot of different variables (torque specs, carb jetting, exhausts, gearing, clutches). At the very least, I'd exercise caution if the stock oil injection system has been left in place, as a 70 kit will keep the RPMs much higher than the stock pump is used to. www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Category:For_Newbies www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Category:Performance_Tuning
Thanks SO MUCH, Travis, for your response and links. I am absolutely not going to be riding this as a mode of transportation. It's solely for practicing and getting my footing on something I can handle until I'm completely comfortable. (ride like a pro dot com) I'd rather practice techniques than "go for a spin". I am very thankful for your response and expertise. THANK YOU!!! Brightest Wishes. JG :D
I just got a 1979 malaguti commuter II. It has a pedal start and I’m wonder where the battery is. I didn’t see you go over the electrical in this video.
Ok so Travis I could hug you. Im on my very first project and I needed this video. I bought two mopeds for $450. A Moto Guzzi Robin and a Pacer Super sport. I could only keep one so I sold the Moto Guzzi that was running by the way but it didn't have that awesome top tank. Now Im taking that money and plunking it in to the pacer that wasn't running, good or bad. I didn't watch this video (kicking myself) before I started to tear in to the Pacer. I was very meticulous about bagging and labeling all the screws and so forth so getting this back together will be pretty easy. I have several issues. First when I took the head off I noticed that the cylinder had a lot of burnt crud all over it. (I will check for scoring thanks to your video) Is that something I can clean? or do I replace the cylinder? Next question. Do you know anything about the Morini M01 engine? If so how do you check the points? I cant seem to see them through the fly wheel.
I would say you made the right choice! The M01 is a better motor than the G2 motor on the Moto Guzzi to start out with. As far as the cylinder, carbon buildup is pretty normal because all two strokes are just dirty, plus the oil they had back in the day was pretty crude, so long it wasn't seized it is probably fine. I had an M01 on a Bianchi moped a few years ago, fairly robust little motor. Italian mopeds always have little bitty flywheel windows, you'll have to really fiddle with it, but you should be able to check/adjust without having to buy a flywheel puller.
I've taken on an '89 Puch that has been sitting in the garage for the past several months, can you show how to do some of the smaller, simple mainenance as well? Starting with changing the engine stop switch? Thanks!
hi, is there any chance you can do a video about checking and setting the timing on these two stroke moped engines? Mine has a minarelli v1. many thanks very good and informative video
Love this page! I've been working on a puch Newport for awhile... The only issue I'm still having is that the acceleration is weak! I cant problem solve this. Any ideas?
hi, I have a trac moped and im just getting started on it say what kind of money am I looking at you know whats the most you've ever invested in one? Thanks for the vids, im in Columbus Ohio later.
I have a 1978 Suchs Balboa moped. It was a barn find and has not started in 30 plus years. Question concerning the ignition under the handle bar,. Is that to lock the steering or start the engine? I do not have a key.
Hey Travis. I bought a 1983 Vespa moped when the pandemic first hit . Just now thinking about getting a look at it and seeing if it will run. Any advise?
Hi there - sure, assuming that is a vespa with pedals, it will have a standard Dellorto SHA carb which came on many different models and is quite easy to clean. Much of the same advice will apply, it will still have ignition points - but it does have a belt and variator instead of a chain, assuming it isn't a single speed Ciao.
Wow you got your work cut out for you,I would love to see this one when you are done with it ,I would love to own one these,I like better than scooters,do they make a lot of after market parts for these,to speed them up a little, like after market exhaust and carbs, bigger piston
This is a very good information. But my scooter is a 2008 Scooter 60 miles on it it's a Chinese scooter. And sometimes it has a habit of hard starts or it sometimes will stall while you're actually writing it. But mainly what is cold I have the hard start problem once it warms up it starts fine
^ Correct that is the best practice. Carb cleaner is not advised because it can contain oil, brake cleaner is better since it won't but both will eat insulation. Annotation made, thanks.
Hello, friends.I have any questions. 1.How must show when the compression is good? 2.When I need to change ONLY piston rings?-how show the compression tester? 3.When I need to change piston and piston rings? Sory for my bad English :/
nalisim The easiest way is using a kickstarter, if it has some resistance i'd say it's ok. 2: If the compression is low, you should change the piston-rings. I recommend that you change the piston while you do that, but it's not neccesary. :)
hey, probably a dumb question but it's haunting my dreams. I have a sachs 504 that I can't figure out how.the clutch cable goes through the decompression valve lever to make it open and close when it's pulled. all the videos and pictures Ive seen just look like the cable passes through it. but if I set it up the way it looks the cable wont affect the valve at all. I'm sure this is simple but I just cant figure it out. awesome videos by the way!
I was given a 1980 Sachs Prima moped by my uncle. It has around 2000 miles on it and appears to be in good condition but when I brought it home it would not start. I took it to a local mechanic who had it running/idling well at his shop. He had cleaned the carberator, put fresh mixed fuel in it. I brought it home and took it about a half mile down the street and it quit and I cannot get it running. The mechanic suggested that it may be the crank seals. Any ideas about what I should try?
Travis, I'm fixing up an old Puch Newport; I noticed it only takes leaded gas. Since you can only buy leaded gasoline today, what do you usually use for fuel?
Just got a 1978 Puch Magnum XK, it was a barn find. I have spark, compression and going to clean the tank. I have the carb apart now and you mentioned the part that holds the float should have a rubber tip, mine does not. Also how did you get the bronze center piece out that the throttle cable goes down into and is I between the floater? Thank you and if you have any more exhaust laying around for sale I may be interested!!
Hey-ya! Old comment, but the float needle will need a rubber tip or you'll have leak city. Treatland.tv for the replacement. The atomizer can be removed with a deep 5mm socket.
+Scott Morgan Hey glad to hear it! Looks like I missed your other comment, apologies - the clutch is usually not a culprit when there are starting problems, more often a cable with too much slack or occasionally the linkage inside the clutch cover needs adjusted but it sounds like you got it sorted
hello, cool video man i have a tomos a35 moped and it runs well but for some reason it dies when i put the choke on what would you suggest to fix this.
My first guess would be air leaks, I'd do the carb cleaner check by spraying the mating surfaces (most possible culprits are the carb -> intake junction, spark plug, cylinder -> head, and head -> base) to see if you have RPM changes or if it kills the bike. If it passes that, I'd verify the carb is clean, on the Dellorto SHA that is most likely on that you are really just looking at the main jet inside the bowl.
Hey great videos! I have a puch maxi and I don't know if its getting gas.. when petcock is in the on position nothing drips out ? Does it need replaced? Or is it vacuum operated?
100% Gravity - Petcock could definitely be clogged, you could take it apart since they're pretty simple, or you could replace, the "puch maxi gold petcock" on Treatland.tv is a fine replacement. If you take the petcock off and gas comes pouring out make sure it's clear and free of debris.
We cleaned the carburetor and we have gas flow when we take it out but when we put it back in the flow stops i don’t know if it’s the carburetor itself because it looks clean or if it’s somewhere else
Some years ago I bought a Suzuki FZ50. After a few weeks one day the exhaustion pipe fell off while riding the moped and the pipe broke. I bought a new one. But after that the moped didnt have much torque when going even slightly up hill. Apart from that it was ok. Havent used the moped for nearly ten years. It has been dripping black oil since then from the back of the exhaust pipe. and the oil tank has also got empty. Would you say this is worth touching?
Do you have a video on fixing misfires? I have a newly acquired FreeStyle and 2hp single speed, I find I hear popping at times when the engine is running full speed or when I let off throttle. It does not seem to be very consistent. The unit runs well, thought there is a lot of crud in the tailpipe. All original, accept the float I put in the carb.
Ive got a Peugeot 102 scooter, ive pulled it apart ages ago, to get it painted but then the guy never did.....So im putting it back together. Im struggling on the front wheel! The nuts fit into channels, so you cant spin them. DO you have to assemble them with the forks off then fit the forks? Is it some trick so the bolts never undo?
+Saidia Manyuan (Globetrotter5K) Unfortunately I don't spend much time around newer bikes, but it appears that the battery will be under the right side cover. If you dig around on TH-cam you should be able to find a video on charging scooter or motorcycle batteries, sorry I couldn't be of more help!
I have a 75 garelli eureka but my compression isnt blowing any air out of the spark plug hole when i did the finger test what could my problem be? And also what do i put in the oil tank? What kind of oil do i use. I have a new spark plug that sparks up, i have fuel just no compression
Pretty helpful video. However, you left out probably the most important step/ part. Just like starting a car, you need to be able to turn the engine over fast enough to start to check for spark, etc. At least seeing your flywheel turn faster than mine did made me realize the starter clutch was messed up on my moped project.
hi i bought a suzuki roadie cs50 as a project, it was in pieces , i have cleaned the carb, changed the plug, the petccok is working, the spark seems good,it wont start,if i put easy start in the cylinder it runs for a second, the fuel is 3 months old so im considering changing it..............any ideas
I have a 1978 jc penney swinger 2 and cant get it started. Its in better shape than most I've seen but has been sitting for at least 10 years without running. When I try to start it and kick the pedal the flywheel only rotates 1-2 times, what does that mean?
I got an m48 engine I just changed the head to a high compression head and I couldn't get it to crank. I cut a 1/32 gasket and put it between The Head And the cylinder now it cranks but it doesn't start. Had it running before I installed the head any ideas
hey travis. thanks for the video. I have a 1978 puch magnum which was my dads. anyway I had someone work on it and he did get it started. with difficulty. I took it for a ride and couldn't get back up the hills. I was told its the carb and needs cleaning. I was also told that it could be a compression problem with a piston. any suggestions.
+stephen negri It could be low compression, but the most common problem with an old moped is usually a dirty carb. I have a video on cleaning the bing that will be on that Magnum. Few other miscellaneous things: Do you have the stock airbox on it? It is tuned from the factory to run with the factory parts. If it's a 1hp model 20mph is the most you can expect out of it. If it is a ZA50 Magnum (Silver models and brown UPS models) with the big two speed transmission sticking out of the side of it the shift pucks will likely need to be replaced sooner rather than later, which is fairly involved. If it's a red Magnum with an e50 you won't have to worry about that obviously.
Did all of the spark stuff cleaned the points and the plug and still not getting a spark. Points don’t open as much as yours by the way. It was sparking and running pretty well only a few days ago and suddenly stopped after a ride in foggy weather. If water damage is the problem what do I need? Im thinking of just buying a new ignition coil and spark plug but if it’s a CDI problem idk what I’ll do. I’m so discouraged at this point I’ve done everything I feel confident in managing myself.
It is all a learning process :) Let's start with the basics, I would absolutely start with a new spark plug to eliminate that factor. If it was sparking then not, I'm wondering if it is something simple like a loose spark plug boot on the spark plug wire or bad plug. If it is the black bosch coil, it is rare for those to go bad. From here, if you still have no spark I would read up on wiring for spark only, you want to eliminate variables like the horn wiring and kill switch wiring. Best of luck, once you go through the ignition system once it's like riding a bike
@@TravisTutorial thanks for the info and here’s the update: I tightened and made sure the boot was fit tight as well as the connection to the ignition coil and all that. Still no spark. I also checked different points for voltage and ultimately decided to get a new ignition coil, cable, boot, and spark plug. I was okay with spending the money for those new parts after testing a bunch. Once I put those in I’ll know if it’s a stator problem or not. Other ppl I’ve talked to agree with me that it’ll probably be that. if that ends up being a problem I’ll get a new stator. I’ll say now I know the kill switch doesn’t work. The lights don’t work either and I think the light switch works because I got voltage when testing those wires at full throttle. I think the stator just doesn’t generate enough electricity for the lights but barely enough for the spark. That’s why I also think the stator finally died on me. Appreciate the help!
@@TravisTutorialjust put the new ignition coil, wire for the boot, spark plug, and boot on. Still no spark. Either I did it too quick and wrong or it means the stator needs fixing. Not sure what to do to make sure I replaced the parts correctly but yea there ya go.
Hello is any one good with moped older ones I have one and I can’t find anything on it. It says Wild fire and I believe it is made by Honda. It’s 49cc please contact me for picture
i baught a 1970,s or 80,s honda spree for 40 bucks like 4 years ago and it ran great untill last summer, i checked the compression, fuel lines, oil, cleaned the carb, replaced air filter, and cleaned all the electric connections and it still does not run. any advice you can give me?
Toll Tone its the same one you made a video on but the dash is different and mine is black with the spree on the side being purple.......i didnt see that video untill after i posted the comment above lol sorry.

The Dellorto is stock on this one ('91). That much is in great shape at least!

Glad they are helpful!
i didnt even notice voice cracks haha, so used to hearing my own crack.
I love dell'Orto carburetors... In Italy the most of the old mopeds have this brand of carburetor
Yes it is better..! The old model 19..Del orto..with ( guillotine)...was really better...but MIKUNI..Also

JG

It sounds like you're off to a pretty good start.
Myrons has a great guide to modern Tomos electrical linked below:
www.myronsmopeds.com/category/service/new-tomos-electrical/
The trouble with buying modified mopeds is that most people don't take the time to property tune after installing a 70 kit.

JG :D
Janet Grace-Alvarado No problem! Happy riding
I just got a 1979 malaguti commuter II. It has a pedal start and I’m wonder where the battery is. I didn’t see you go over the electrical in this video.
NGK SPARK PLUGS SAVE THE DAY.
I look forward to the first start video i just picked up a 77 maxi sport and got it running the carb was clogged
Good Vid. Maxi air boxes split too.
Thanks!
Voice cracks are funny 😂
Your last name is funny
Crack voices in my head are funny too.
Lol
Blows your finger off!?! Lol! Man your hard core!
"If it blows your finger off...then....you passed...the thumb test"
hi, is there any chance you can do a video about checking and setting the timing on these two stroke moped engines? Mine has a minarelli v1. many thanks very good and informative video
Great video travis ,
great info ,keep up the great work
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Thanks! More to come!
This was a great watch - thanks dude! Super informative for a newbie like me.
I may give these a try, i have an old 77 tomos i wanna try to get running again.
But mainly what is cold I have the hard start problem once it warms up it starts fine
you dont want to use carb or brake cleaner on ignition, use contact cleaner, those others can melt the insulation on your coils
^ Correct that is the best practice. Carb cleaner is not advised because it can contain oil, brake cleaner is better since it won't but both will eat insulation. Annotation made, thanks.
Get a Honda express please!!
Question what is the right spark plug for bianchi moped? I run for a little miles and then stopped.
Thanks
I would love too see a puegoet bike next. Thise things Are sick. I also love puch, but i have a puegot
I did the finger test… it sucks my finger in instead of trying to blow it away. What does this mean
Hello,friends.I have any questions.
....Thanks for posting this...It was very helpful....
hey, probably a dumb question but it's haunting my dreams.
Pistol not moving when pedaling. Suggestion?
The atomizer can be removed with a deep 5mm socket.
puch
What kind of spark plugs do they use? I have a malaguti and looks like the same engine
It's alive. Thanks travis
+Scott Morgan Hey glad to hear it! Looks like I missed your other comment, apologies - the clutch is usually not a culprit when there are starting problems, more often a cable with too much slack or occasionally the linkage inside the clutch cover needs adjusted but it sounds like you got it sorted
Excellent tutorial - glad I subscribed!
hello, cool video man i have a tomos a35 moped and it runs well but for some reason it dies when i put the choke on what would you suggest to fix this.
Great! I ordered a new petcock I hope that does the trick. I subscribed to your channel btw. Keep up the great work!
Can you make a video about the things you do to get a bike save?
Like what you always check and do.
so , I have an old townmate 90cc bike whuch isnt bren ridden in 17 years I hope this would help me turn it back to life .
We cleaned the carburetor and we have gas flow when we take it out but when we put it back in the flow stops i don’t know if it’s the carburetor itself because it looks clean or if it’s somewhere else
What’s the laws for Philadelphia and Sachs moped.
Would you say this is worth touching?
hey man, what should I do if the pedal is stuck on the moped and won't move??????? PLZ help
Popping is usually ignition timing related
I got a 1980 vip garelli moped I’m trying to fix I need more compression any pointers
Can you please make a video about how to wire lights on your puch?
Ive got a Peugeot 102 scooter, ive pulled it apart ages ago, to get it painted but then the guy never did.....So im putting it back together. Im struggling on the front wheel! The nuts fit into channels, so you cant spin them. DO you have to assemble them with the forks off then fit the forks? Is it some trick so the bolts never undo?
I'm working on a 70s solo odyssey moped, looking for parts carb, rings , and reed valve
Can you make a video on how to charge the battery of a laser 5 SSR moped ?
+Saidia Manyuan (Globetrotter5K) Unfortunately I don't spend much time around newer bikes, but it appears that the battery will be under the right side cover. If you dig around on TH-cam you should be able to find a video on charging scooter or motorcycle batteries, sorry I couldn't be of more help!
TravisTutorial OK; thanks.
I thought you had to put a little oil in the plug hole, for a compression test
Need a video on how to overhaul the wheel hubs of a moped there is zero videos on YT how how to do that.
Thanks!
I have a 1978 jc penney swinger 2 and cant get it started. Its in better shape than most I've seen but has been sitting for at least 10 years without running. When I try to start it and kick the pedal the flywheel only rotates 1-2 times, what does that mean?
Any tips on getting the ignition out
I got an m48 engine I just changed the head to a high compression head and I couldn't get it to crank.
+TravisTutorial its a red magnum with an e50. thanks for your input. your very popular on here. nice job.
It is all a learning process :)
Let's start with the basics, I would absolutely start with a new spark plug to eliminate that factor.
What kind of spark plug wire should I use on my puch maxi?
My moped is not kick starting the stator is not spinning when kicked
So I inherited a 1982 Honda Express. I finally got it started but I have oil leaking from the exhaust. What would be the reason for this?
it’s not oil it’s the gas oil mix and it’s needs to be tighter
I have a JCPenney pinto. It only has spark sometimes. Any advice? I already changed the condenser
Update: I crossed the horn wires and it ran amazing!
I know this is 5 years old but do you just take the horn out and cross all same colored wires?
Love this video, very helpful information
Hey Travis, What do you know about bypassing the vacuum fuel / Petcock on a old FZ50?
Prv valve leaking and terminates unsafely on your unstrapped water heater
why do you use such a long hose on the compression tester? can't you just make a short bit? :) love your vids!
What's the outlet size 10mm or 8mm for your blue puch maxi 300mm extreme shocks ?
