@@craggy1969 If you're still looking, I'd look into open box Bestbuy or keep looking at Ebay (I got one used just now for $245 free shipping which is beat up but Ebay backs you up normally if something is broken/doesn't work as stated) If you found one let me know what you think since there's only so few in-depth reviews and many negative comments on Samsung's website and a few on Amazon (though, literally everything on Samsung's website is rated 3 stars or less so I don't take those too much into consideration)
I just picked up the n950 and am throughly impressed. With atmos I can actually hear stuff flying overhead. Even without an atmos source, the sound quality is amazing.

Are the rear speakers worth an extra 600 dollars?
@@Maikeru722 to me...yes. Everyone is different tho. But they are not just your rears, they also have upfiring speakers. When you have an atmos track playing, it creates a bubble of sound.

Oh and I can tell you from Samsung: The N850's soundbar and sub are identical to the N950's one. The N950 JUST adds the rear speakers.
Lot of people ask three sound modes..meaning etc...then answer is........ There are three sound modes to enhance the audio: Standard, which decodes the incoming audio; Surround Sound Expansion, which upmixes the audio to use all the available speakers; and Smart, which analyses the incoming signal, and chooses the best available processing.

When it comes down to watts and comparing them to last year you would do good to make sure you are comparing them correctly. What you have is a n850 that has 372w the n950 has 512watts cause it has 2 more speakers. You were comparing this to last year's k950 which is why you didnt understand why it had less watts because the k950 also had 2 more speakers. Last years k850 had 350w and the k950 had 500w. So both the setups this year increased their watt output. You just need to know what you're talking about.
And going purely on watts is 'knowing what you're talking about'? Smh.

Sorry not heard it personally, but from someone I trust, they say it's great for mids, but not for the surround sound
Had mine for awhile and I'm still trying to figure out the best settings to dial for it
How does the N series compare to the K series? Was very disappointed with my K950 (with rears). No DTS:X even by firmware update. Suffer lots of HDMI handshake issues and speaker disconnects which are a pain to reestablish. Only get best sound when running everything through the Xbox One X when set to Atmos becasue it "tricks" all sources coming over that way into registering as Atmos so you get good full room simulation. On non Atmos sources, I can hardly even notice the rears or rear heights even when set to "Surround: On." If I could get a decent price for the K950, I may consider upgrading to the N950 although it will be hard to convince my wife after how much she has grown to disapprove of the K950. We have these issues even though it is hooked up to a Samsung QLED! Thanks for your input!
Well to the points you mentioned, I had no issues whatsoever with the N850. I can't comment on the N950 - but can by the things I see about it online.
Theoretically, the N950 should be like the N850, just with rear speakers -so if you're looking for a more seamless experience the N series will be your go-to option.
Personally, depending on how much you want those rear speakers, you could get the N850, and sell the K950 - and you shouldn't be too much out of change :)
Sold my HT-ST5000 and got the N950 with no regrets 👍🏾

Hi may i have your actual user experience comparing both st5000 and n950? Im still comtemplating between sony and samsung. Difficult decision for me.

Samsung truly gives an amazing immersive surround effects thanks to the rear speakers.
Oh and my 5000,within 3 weeks I had issues with them speakers ( distorted sound ) got it changed like 2 times and finally got a new unit. Lastly my horrible experience with sony support made me sold the unit !

1) Which soundbar/soundbar + subwoofer would you recommend for £500-550?
3) Would you recommend this n850 over MS650, MS750?
2) Would you recommend the N850 over Sonos Beam + 2 Sonos Ones or Sonos Playbar + 2 Sonos Ones?
If the N850 can be had for that price, it's by far the best option
totallydubbedHD I did think I found one on eBay but it’s used so I passed. I am now torn between Samsung Q70r or Sonos Beam. Both without rear speakers but whichever I choose will have them later on. I’m really torn, any advice would be appreciated. Tv I have is a Samsung 65” (2015)

Q9fn gives dolby atmos output?, what are the apps in Qled tv supports Atmos. As per Netflix site only LG ,Sony and Xbox one supports dolby atmos.

subbiah kalidass TV does not output Dolby Atmos it’s the Sound bar- HMDI Arch- Media like Apple TV rentals or Blu Rays if your device is Dolby equipped like the Xbox One S or X hope this helps!
Can you really get the Atmos experience on the n850 ? Without the tears that you get with the n950?

Great review. I need two sources for this soundbar : TV and PS4. How would it work? Booth via HDMI? Optic cable? Or connect PS4 with HDMI to TV and then just one cable (which one?) to soundbar? Would i loose sound quality if i don't connect directly PS4 and sound bar?
I'd connect the PS4 to the TV, then the soundbar to the TV - HDMI on both

I haven't unfortunately! On paper, I'd say the N850 looks the better deal, but I can only go based on what I briefly saw online for the Sony (especially given its MSRP was £1.5k)
I have the Sony St5000. It's wonderful and really fills up the room. I'd say it's worth it.

After having my HT-ST5000 for a year and a half, I must say for any atmos bar and Sub combo, there isn’t one better or more powerful. I guarantee this sub will be more powerful then any bar and sub combo to date... Atmos in this thing is phenomenal. I have a lot of movies with atmos and BLADERUNNER & WAS READY PLAYER One being my reference disk and I must say you won’t get a better experience. I’m not a SONY fan boy but they truly do have the best material when it comes to TVS and sound bar equipment right now. Just ask yourself this, it’s a 2017 Bar that is still at its top dollar closing 2019.

It looks like it won't work over ARC, due to the port versions.
Not ever getting Atmos is rubbish IMO -the soundbar does the processing, not the TV once plugged in. Of course on its own (the tv) can't read or decode an atmos signal.

No idea about Apple tv, you'll need to look that up - I presume it just plugs into one of the hdmi ports (on the tv) and you're set to go

You've got 2x hdmi inputs and 1x output. So technically it should work yes.

Honestly, depends on your room's acoustics. But I'd leave virtual off, and enable smart mode.
Given this is almost 2 yrs old, does it still compare to the newest Samsung and Sony sound bars? I can get is second hand for 400 CAD.
Not tried the Sony ones, but this is equivalent to the Q80R, in fact, given the choice, I'd pick this one over the newer Samsung - adaptive sound, when I tested it, was terrible
If we buy the extra speakers or buy any 7.1 Soundbar we'll need to get a receiver for all that?

How may watts is the subwoofer? I currently have a samsung m550, total watts around 350...this one has a total of 372, seems like it should be stronger with the extra speakers and high price tag.

Ive just bought this but having major issues with the subwoofer, the link is a solid blue light, but everytime i turn tv off and soundbar, when i turn back on, subwoofer will have a solid blue light but no bass, unless i press up on remote to pair again, very annoying

But if I understand you correctly the atmos sound of the N850 is good enough and the N950 is better but not superior to N850?

Henrik Cederin yes exactly. Dont forget, i know this is a year too late, but this soundbar requires proper room acoustics for full effect. The n950 may give an extra edge for the atmos “bubble” but the n850 (i have its bigger brother now q80r) does a fantastic job. Just watch the scene in captain america civil war at 1:30. Youll be blown away.
@@garretts431 thanks. I had some special offers on both n850 and n950, while n950 was out of stock. I didn't dare to wait for the n950 to be refilled in stock, so I bought the n850 with extra rear speakers (without Atmos element). A really good Soundbar.

Where is the best positions for the 2 speakers that come with the sound bar?. Also what part of the suborder should be facing the wall.? Also have xbox one x and a Nu8000 how do I stop the xbox one x losing TV connection when it's running through the the sound bar. It goes black then resyncs the screen. The hdmi cables are both HDR and 4k combatible
Slightly behind you, ear level (so on a stand or something). Forward facing sub, right or left side is fine, corner ideal with a little gap off. No idea about the Xbox stuff, sorry

@@TotallydubbedHD The HW-N850 is £999, N950 £1499, K950 £999. As of right now that's the best I can find.
So, if you really want rear-firing speakers, then I'd opt for the K950. And if you want better sound quality, and don't mind the lack of rear-firing speakers, get the N850.
I feel the N950 is a tad too expensive, though, I've not heard it - I can only go based on what I've read online. Looks like the N850 with rear speakers, only. At which point the £500 premium seems a little too steep.

Does anyone know how to run Dolby Atmos in HDMI with VLC?
I picked this up last week and I love it so far. The clarity really is amazing. I'm having some trouble hearing the Atmos effect, however. I have my Xbox One S connected directly to it and I'm playing the new avengers movie. Does anyone want to share their sound mode and speaker settings?
Make sure that, within the movie, you've got it to the right audio settings. Likewise for your Xbox settings (does it even support Atmos?) - mine picked it up instantly with a 4K bluray player
The Xbox has a sound setting for 7.1 uncompressed, which I have turned on. I didn't see any audio settings under the movie menus. Thanks for the reply and great review.
@@jsisock79 'the Xbox One X and, following a firmware update back in April 2017, the Xbox One S can both support a relatively new sound format called Dolby Atmos.' From a Google. So as long as you're updated you should get Atmos. Not really sure what settings you get to do to hear it to be honest! Let me know if you figure it out - and thank you :)

Just changes the way the sound is projected. I'd opt for the surround option, gets those side ones firing louder

I'm going to be using a virgin v6 box and a Samsung TV. Is it HDMI arc from sound bar to HDMI arc tv? Then HDMI 1 to HDMI slot in my v6 box? Your advice would be very much appreciated
@@Houndog545 funnily enough - I got it in for review, then had to send it back to Samsung. Why? Because the equivalent of Smart Mode, called Adaptive Mode created a fishbowl effect. Was faulty/broken and I refused to review it as Samsung said it was a software/FW problem....but then I never got the follow-up review unit, which was/is annoying.
Ultimately, it's the same as the N850, just a little better in the sub-bass frequencies, but that's about it. It's otherwise identical to the N850. And at the time, the Q80R was basically £400 more expensive which made absolutely no sense vs the N850...now the N850 is almost impossible to find...you've now got your hand forced lol.
I'm not too familiar with how it works with box sets, but from what I know/understand: your box goes into the TV via HDMI, then another HDMI goes from your TV to soundbar - the TV then routes every incoming audio signal to the soundbar. I could be wrong, but just Google it to be sure/or just try to experiment with it if and when you get the soundbar, and let me know what you find :)
@@TotallydubbedHD that's right it's so difficult to find this sound bar now and like you said my hand is forced towards the q80r which I had a listen to in Currys today and it sounds brilliant but I also liked the sound of the q70 so I can get the q70 for around £550 or pay an extra £150 for the q80. What would you do my friend?
@@Houndog545 Q80R definitely. A lot better in many ways.
Can you compare this to the new Q80R?
basically, it's exactly the same, but the Q80R has more boomy bass and does away with Smart SOund in favour of Adaptive Sound, which from my tests had plenty of problems vs Smart Sound.
totallydubbedHD what are your top 5 soundbars? I want to get this but it would block the LG C9 screen as its has a very low stand.

For a $1200(US) sound bar that can play high res audio files, the frequency response is a bit disappointing. 34Hz-17kHz only.
That's for the bar only, not the sub, as it sounds like it gets down to 25hz or so, doesn't sound cut off like the MS650/750 which cut off at around 34hz. I've asked Samsung for clarification.
@@TotallydubbedHD Cool, but I wasn't concerned about the lows. Its the 17kHz that's concerning. It should go up to at least 20kHz for something in this price range.

The HW-N950 is actually the best soundbar with Atmos and DTS-X. The HW-N850 is probably on par with the SK10Y
that's true (about the N950), but it wasn't out and no one had heard it at the time of review :)
I'm selling them like hot cakes at work. They're bonkers. Will be buying one myself for sure! Our LG rep recently gave me an SK6Y so I've gotta offload that first.

They're almost identical, but the price difference is huge. I'd pick the N850

@@EmmanuelJarri honestly, just the subwoofer - but I had issues with the q80r, whereby adaptive sound screwed up the sound quality vs smart mode on the n850 - so to be honest, I'd still be inclined to pick the older model
On Amazon they have a WIRELESS system that's ranked #1 called the NAKAMISHI elite 7.2 system. It beat Sony, Samsung, vizio and others in a blindfold test. (200 people tested). The system cost $799!!! And envelopes you in a 360 surround bubble. The sound bar has 8 drivers, then it also has two sub woofers!!!, with 2 rears.

What was written above about the Nakamishi Elite conforms to many other reviews - not just Amazon’s. In fact, in the “blindfolded” test conducted among audiophiles & audiophile journalists at the Jan/18 CES, Nakamishi even beat Creative Lab’s $5,000 model. So why don’t I own one? This otherwise allegedly great-sounding system does NOT support Atmos or dts:x. The “surround sound” is simulated. That may be enuf for some (especially at their price point), but not me.
@@ttaylor5847 sennheiser should be coming out with one that has binaural sound. No idea of the codec support though
totallydubbedHD yea it's supposed to be released in early 2019 the ambeo 3d sound bar, also it has great codec support and will come with eArc as well. I can't wait

I’ll stick with the ST5000
both n950, n850 and ms750+sub cannot "replace" the st5000. I own both n950 and st5000, and in terms of music sony's sound, especially for instruments, is superior. Just depends on the purpose, movie or music. I think st5000 works better for me as a wifi streaming speaker...jsut saying.
TonyWilliamGT yup still sticking with mine especially when one of my friends bought this one during Black Friday and at volume 35 it sounds horrible..
You actually discover it my friend. I purchased it as many reviews said that the n950 can be extremely loud, and I want to fill my entire house. Thats true when it comes to loudness, but not the enjoyment. Im pretty disappointed about the distortion at higher volume, say 31~32, which just prefect volume for my house. The distortion cancelling is just calm, not really true. I contacted samsung and replaced a new one, but didnt help at all. st5000 got the distortion problem either, but in a less degree. Say for n950, when 27 is prefect sounding, raise to 30 the harsh will easily discovered. Sony does the same things, but when the volume raise, the distortion that u can feel raise in gentle, not in a sudden/rapid way. For me, that looks better. Have to say, for a $1600 bar, it's so disappointing for the distortion.

Yea I aggerr XD It manage to control the distortion much better than n950 for no doubt(based on my experience with these two bars for 3 months).
By the way everyone, all these reviews are trash and you should not listen to any of this junk. No soundbar can output DD, DA, DTS-X... because ARC does not passthrough any of those formats. Arc is limited to 1gbs/s and you need high speed HDMI 18 gb/s to move any of those formats. So you will have to turn off ARC on your TV to get that format or get eARC that is extremely costly right now. So you cannot use your TV as a switch, you have to use soundbar as a switch, not sure about this bar but ARC on TV controls the inputs and it keeps switching to arc instead of proper input on the soundbar.
you're wrong in thinking this can't output those formats. I suggest you look it up.
FYI: My setup was: Blu-ray via HDMI to TV, TV to soundbar via Wi-Fi - and Atmos worked flawlessly
@@TotallydubbedHD I did not say the soundbar cannot output those formats, I said TV cannot pass through those formats to soundbar through ARC. The TV cannot be used as a switch. The player or streaming device must be connected directly to the soundbar. This is never explained in any of the videos, people spend extra money and cannot pass through their TV.
@@vitalyg149 that's very true but again case-by-case dependent - in my case, I don't have that problem; TV can pass true those formats if the TV itself supports it
