The Rivian R1T is a truly revolutionary product. It attempts to be a true one-vehicle solution: everything to everybody. For a company's first vehicle, this is an incredibly bold mission. But, incredibly, the R1T actually succeeds at it. With four EV motors adding up to 835 insane HP, the R1T, like other high-end EV's is a dragster. It's also, thanks to McLaren-like suspension, incredibly agile in the canyons and incredibly luxurious on the highway and in the city. With very smart torque vectoring software, its a rally car on dirt roads. And with height-adjustable suspension and a flat-deck undercarriage, it's a beast on the trail. Although the R1T isn't cheap at $91,000 as tested, it passes every test we throw at it with flying colors.
Rivian provided the vehicle and insurance for this test.

@@Team_Trade_Down The Georgia plant is for new models. They haven’t announced what those are yet, but they did confirm they will be used for new models. My guess is they will announce a Ford Bronco/Jeep Wrangle competitor. Most likely a smaller SUV too, Bronco Sport-like. These will probably be what they will build in their EU factory as well, once they land on one. Really long term, I bet they would dominate additional adventure vehicles like side by sides, jet skis and or snowmobiles. They’re charging network would support these vehicles at trailheads.

An EV is going to add at least $10k in battery, so $35-40k absolute best case. Easily $50k if you want anything more than the most bare-bones vehicle, and as long as they are supply constrained (batteries) they are going to focus on the higher profit premium level. @alistairwillock7266 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@GregMcNamer EV trucks definitely won't "always" start $50k+ _in present-day dollars._ We're still in the really early days of economies of scale, and in really throwing billions of dollars (or tens of billions) at battery development. There's a _ton_ of incremental improvements in energy density that will appear in the next 5 to 10 years. Each of those improvements will in turn incrementally improve the range-to-weight equation, which then will improve the entry-level price. I.e. you don't need any of the step-function improvements in battery technology (which are still years away from even production prototypes) for this stuff to get a _lot_ better. You just need the standard iterative improvements that investment and competition will inevitably bring - and that we're in fact already seeing in the car and SUV segments.
The counter-argument is that there's still only one true _volume_ EV manufacturer, and that's Tesla. Everyone else is still working on volume efficiencies. But if one company can do it, the rest will figure it out. Their survival depends on it.

I wouldn't necessarily say that Rivian is implying their vehicle will save the world with the nature themed elements of the car, like the bird chirping and the 'eco friendly' interior. They have always marketed it as an 'adventure' vehicle. I think they are just trying to keep up with that theme of being one with nature. I have not looked into the charging network that Rivians can use but until Rivian's can start charging at Tesla stations or have a big enough network that can compete, lack of a charging network will be Rivian's biggest pitfall IMO. Awesome review!

They do not actually believe they are saving the planet. Global warming/global cooling/climate change is a giant scam. Rivian has to push this narrative, because its investors require it. As it stands, these EVs certainly won't be enough to "save the world," but I do think they do a good job of showcasing what's possible and getting people interested/excited for what the future has to offer. So much needs to happen in order for global emissions to change, and a ton of that has little to nothing to do with how you or I go about buying a new vehicle.

great video guys, really enjoyed it. would like to add that a comment regarding the R1Ts efficiency. You're right, one could buy a used Geo Metro getting 50+ mpg. but that's not the comparison. the comparison is to new pickups. why not mention that? the EPA says this uses 480 wh/mi. with electricity at say 10c per kwhr, that's 4.8c per mile to run the rivian. With gas at $4 per gallon, you'd need a vehicle to get 83 mpg to equal it. what current ICE vehicle gets 83mpg?? So yeah, the rivian IS more efficient than every single ICE vehicle sold. Also, study after study shows that an EV will be a net benefit within a year or two, compared to an ICE vehicle, including the costs to build the vehicle, and that's with today's existing electric grid. Also important, the grid continues to get greener every year, therefore your EV continues to get greener every year. An ICE vehicle continues to destroy the planet the entire time you own it, and use it. (this is also assuming you're not charging the R1T via solar on your roof, at which point the rivian is very much "greener" than any ICE vehicle) so, yeah, are there more efficient EVs out there? yes. are there more efficient EV pickups? no. are there more efficient ICE pickups? also no. wish you'd mention that at the end of the video.

Nicely done guys, it is interesting because you could have the same vehicle (minus the clever EV storage and 0-60) as an ICE or Hybrid, all the tech and dynamics of this with no range issues (and it would weigh 1000lbs less). I hope it will raise the bar for all vehicles and well done Rivian for creating such a well conceived and executed vehicle first time out. That's what I'm hoping for at least with this fresh blood and thinking is that everything gets better

Eh it's not really true. This Rivian will have less environmental impact over it's full lifecycle than almost any ICE vehicle (raw materials, production, and operation).
The reality is EVs are more environmentally friendly. The reason is the efficiency of electric motors, which convert 90%+ of energy into motion vs ~30% for gas engine.
The Rivian's huge battery is equivalent of only 4 gallons of gasoline!

    • @The_Stanman
      @The_Stanman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm someone who loves gas engines and plans to own one for the rest of my life. But my love for ICE doesn't change the physics and math that make EVs a better solution for people who view cars as appliances.

WOW guys, you really put this EV to the test!!!!! I really like this vehicle after all your comments, even though, the last ones I couldn't follow or understand. But in my opinion, Tesla is # 1, as a car and forget any Porsche, Jaguar or Lucid, and this truck is # 1 as an all around vehicle, although I don't like off- roading, but is good to know that it will withstand super heavy duty stuff in case of an emergency!!! I hope you do the same test with the Cybertruck. That is the one I put my deposit and I am waiting for- the three motor version. So thanks a lot for your SUPERB REVIEW of this machine!!!!!!

cool video. I am confused by the sentiment that this is not an ecological vehicle. It gets 70 MPGe and the battery holds the energy equivalent of 4 gallons of gas. Yes, you could do better by buying a more efficient EV but my current car gets combined 23 mpg. Also as the US moves away from burning coal the impact of those 70MPGe will be reduced.

A 135 kWh battery takes around 72 pounds of carbon to charge here in CA. To go 300 miles in a 19 mpg truck, it produces 285 pounds of carbon. The carbon break even point is probably around 4 years of driving to offset the carbon production of the battery. So if you plan on keeping it for longer than 4 years, yes you begin to put out less carbon.
However, your energy production mix varies by state, and you’ll need to look up how much carbon your energy provider produces per kWh.

I’ve been waiting for someone like Matt to review the Rivian. Doug Demuro’s review was great but it seemed like he loved the truck because of all the quirks and features. As for Motortrend, I unfortunately don’t really trust their reviews. To me it says a lot that Matt has such high praise for the driving characteristics along with the fact that Doug likes it for the quirks and features. Neither of them mentioned anything about a lack of build quality which is one of my main concerns with a new company. Both Matt and Doug would definitely talk about quality concerns if there was something to complain about. Along with the fact that it’s the worlds fastest truck, very capable on and off road, etc. etc. etc. this truck checks so many boxes it isn’t even funny.

I couldn’t agree more about the Start / Stop button, I love the intrinsic safety of it and the fact I’m in control of my vehicle
Also the theatre of turning it on as it’s my car not a white goods product
That’s why I’m shocked that Volvo don’t have one on their XC40 EV, they’d did in the petrol, diesel and hybrid versions, but just left a blank in the full EV
That’s why I won’t but an electric vehicle without one , so no Volvo, Polestar et al fir me 🤬
I’m glad Jag, Porsche and Mustang have them and have listened to customers 🙈👍🏻
Also needs Apple CarPlay etc as that’s what customers want and need 🍏
Would be great if you could lower the pantelis between the headlights to access the Froot / Frunk easier and if the tailgate dropped fully, but hopefully these things will come in future 🛻🙏🏻

Great review on and off road. The R1T is a really impressive vehicle given how well it performs off and on road. At 90 grand, it's just not an attainable vehicle, not very long ago, this was house money. The range is perfectly adequate, though I'd take half the horsepower, 40% less weight, and an extra foot of bed length, but all those priorities become contradictory when it comes to EVs.
