    Congratulations on the new book, Huw! Just wondering, have you ever tried inoculating your compost pile with soil samples from local forests? I took a tablespoon of soil from a couple old forests in my area, and my compost and soil is now much richer in fungal life!

      Good day. In general foreign fungus and baterial inputs will be outcompeted by local existing micro organisms. However if a niche exists that isn't filled yet it can add. Usually it doesn't. Kr

    Interesting to hear you say that potatoes are ‘quite destructive of the soil’ and to grow in containers. I discovered quite the opposite here in Tuscany Italy in my start up garden…. The container potatoes dried out quickly and required a lot of water and attention and I got no crop. However the quality of a clay soil after a first crop of potatoes has been beautiful. Very happy with my first grown crop of potatoes too! I suspect the exudates from the potatoes help the soil microbiology to develop. Next year I want to put my potatoes crops using No Dig with straw on all my new garden beds as a first crop. One can rarely have enough potatoes! Huw, thanks for sharing your gardening experience with us all.

    I have a hack that works for me in my arid region. Most of my beds are raised but a few are in the ground especially those where I grow brassicas. Watering those areas can be difficult, with the water running off rather than going in. I cut the bottoms off of gallon size plastic nursery pots (which I have plenty) then bury them about half way in the ground. I plant the young brassica seedling in the center. Then, all I have to do is go around and fill the pots with water which is directed straight down to the roots. I use much less water and the plants do great. Also, I don't get many weeds since I'm not watering the whole bed.

    Just a suggestion to make your videos clearer for everyone, especially us people who live "down under", if you could refer to the season e.g. "early Spring", that would make your talks easier to follow for your followers around the world. If you don't have a greenhouse / polytunnel, you can transplant some brassicas indoors like a houseplant. Obviously depends on variety and your space etc. I had them on a sunny window and got 2-3 months more leaf productions from pak choi and chard I took inside. Downside was they had aphids and they took over but by that time there was little sunlight anyway so out they went. Do be careful if you have other plants indoors that outdoor pests would infect.

    There's some great hacks here, some that I will use myself. As for the "plank" method for germinating seeds, I've used a form of that for years: Sometimes I sow seeds in squares as well as rows and I always cover my newly-sown seeds with anything I have available - maybe an old piece of carpet, piece of plywood or cardboard, slightly weighted down. I never have to worry about my seeds drying out.

    Congratulations on your book release! Regarding the plank over the sown seeds: it occurs to me that the plank also protects the seeds from birds and rodents that might otherwise pick and eat the seeds. Here at our small, city apartment, we have had a balcony garden through the pandemic and struggled with keeping the squirrels (and an occasional rat) away from the seeds. Sowing indoors and then transplanting helped but it didn't occur to me to cover the seeds. Thanks for the tip! BTW: I like your channel because your climate zone is similar to mine. The California gardeners are nice to watch but I prefer to learn from someone who knows about the weather challenges I will face in the Midwest.

    Thank you Huw for very useful tips! I wonder if the "plank method" of germination has more to it than just moisture retention? There are some very interesting experiments with microgreens where moisture is controlled and the same in all trays but those trays with few kg of weights on them germinate better and lead to higher yield of crop than those without weight. Maybe it's weight of the plank as well as moisure that help germination? Interesting topic!

    • @tashmartin8869
      @tashmartin8869 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've ONLY had success with the plank method. I'm shocking with forgetting I've sown something (even labeled!) Or my dogs will go for a "wander through the gardens" and whatever else! Because the seeds don't need sun to germinate and almost no soil, even a watering can will easily move the seeds, and not always where you want them! So I find the "visual aid" of a plank, with a label so I know the type, amazingly helpful! My success rate is brilliant and I actually over sow my seeds as when I thin them out I either get baby carrots/beets or I use the greens in salad.
      I'm also not hugely fussed on "perfect rows" I'll mark the width/length of the plank in the soil and just scatter, thinning what I NEED to. As time goes on you can clearly see which need thinning, still giving you the "baby version" or salad greens but I get a vast amount more beets/parsnips/turnips/radishes/lettuces than sticking to lines or the square foot method. Instead we go by "survival of the fittest" (within reason!)
      I thoroughly water wherever I'm planting, sow seeds and then give it a light mist and maybe one more mist before the plank comes off. So it's incredibly time saving, the seeds STAY where they're planted as opposed to "wandering" from water flow and I don't get caught out if I don't make it into the garden when they NEED water. The planks weight won't change anything, if you added much you'd possibly struggle with delicate seedlings like carrots popping up, same with lettuce, taking into account whether they're root veges or not I don't think would change all that much?!

    • @bluemoon8268
      @bluemoon8268 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      … the weighted microgreens is what came to my mind as well when I saw him using the planks … it makes for stronger seedlings apparently …

    Hi Huw, I've been using the plank method ever since I saw it on one of your videos, it is incredibly successful and I tell everyone about it! I do make sure to look under the planks every day to check for our little slimy friends- this becomes another advantage to using this method in keeping down slug numbers!

    The bucket of water idea is good, but I’d make a cover for it with window screen, hardware cloth, or chicken wire, if you don’t mind mosquitoes from breeding in it,
    it can be a drowning hazard if you have toddlers around, even if you don’t have children about, small mammals can climb in for a drink and drowning as I found happen to one of our local Chipmunks. Thank you for the tips, and congratulations on your book.
    I love your channel, you’ve come a long was since the avocado & grape seeds, beautifully done at that.

    Tried now for 4 years and I harvest very little. In NI. I have so much to work with ie space, seeds, equipment. Just feel useless. This year I'm sticking to very few . I have 3 books of yours. They're lovely and easy to follow. But with so much info and I'm a useless Gardener 🙃 so I have to look up so much info and words to their meaning. Gardening is hard work when I work more hours than I sleep each week . I hope to get started something simple this year
