ahh btw, since you touch the topic of the importance of the songs, I don't know if it would be reading too much into it but, in the episode of the invisible girl, at the end, tooticky is telling moomin that he needs to help those who are lost (or smth like that) and dodie's song "Ready now" starts playing and right in that moment they show snufkin walking alone in the woods, so I don't know, I think it was very sweet, like maybe hinting that snufkin is not as independent as he looks?

You forgot to mention the point that Snufkin doesn't send away the Dragon because he wants it to be free, but because he doesn't want Moomin to be upset. He also really likes the dragon, but Moomin would be jealous.
I grew up with the 90’s version and the books. (As a Finn, it’s a lifestyle). If I remember correctly, Tove wrote the books after the Winter War, to bring joy and comfort. I love how the series is really warm, as in not every episode has to be a crisis about something. It helped me deal with depression later on in life.
Yes, the warmth of it all is a big deal for me. These characters make me feel so cozy!
Moominvalley 2019 is where I actually discovered the Moomin franchise :D I fell inlove with the 2019 remake and when I discovered it has a 90's version and is actually a book. I completely jumped into the fandom and believe me, I love and adore all Moomins!♡ Books, shows, comics and etc!♡ I think it has been 2 months since I joined I think? :D

2:50 Hello, Swede and half-Finnish here! The age of Moomin has technically not been aged up. To give some more context since you brought up the Finnish dub briefly, the Swedish and Finnish dubs of the 90s adaptation had Moomin with an older sounding voice actor like the 2019 adaptation. In fact, both languages are dubbed by the same voice cast in the 90s version since Finnish and Swedish are both spoken in Finland. The English dub of the 90s show took more inspiration from the original Japanese version where Moomin also had a childlike voice. However, since the books are from Finland and the author first published them in Swedish since she was from the Swedish speaking part of the country (she was also the one who greenlit the Japanese 90s adapation to get made), these dubs are the most authentic to the original source material.
Also, Moomin was very clearly more of a teenager in the Swedish and Finnish adaptations. His relationship with Snorkmaiden was overall flirtatious and not very kiddish in nature, which might have been lost in translation in the English version. Their relationship was pretty close to being in the young adult stage with them nearly being ready to settle yet still being too young to leave their family homes yet.

That's a good observation that Moomin didn't put in motion any of his adventures up to the last ep, even in the dream sequence it was Snorkmaiden who goaded him into jumping now that i think about it! I also hadn't thought of the Groke as a metaphor for Moomin's relationship with Snufkin and now I'm sad ahahaha
The Groke was actually partially inspired by Tove's fear of being judged over her relationship with her partner Tuulikki, so I loved the way they handled the character in that episode! I'd also love to talk more about Snufkin in a future video, as I also think he has some development coming his way too! I'm glad you liked the video

Many people see gay elements in the way Snufkin is written thanks to how Tove drew inspiration from her own experiences and feelings as a gay individual. Still, no matter how you see it, Moomintroll and Snufkin care a lot about each other!

As someone who grew up with the 90s anime, the Moominvalley series gave me a serious nostalgia trip, and made me fall back in love with this amazing piece of work. I love your analysis of the themes and characters in the show, and your delivery and points really landed, especially your points of Moomin's and Snufkin's relationship. Keep up the good work👌

Wow! This was a really insightful and in depth analysis! I think everyone could learn something about themselves from this video and from the series! I just picked this series up when I started college and I gotta day it’s helped me a lot! And I love your analysis as well of the themes in the series. It’s helped me deal with feeling lonely at times and not being able to let go. This series truly is a beautiful masterpiece! Now I just need to buy the books to read... Okay, okay in all seriousness though I love that you pointed out this relationship dynamic between Moomintroll and Snufkin! I'm not sure how aware you are about the symbolism Tove put on Snufkin and Moomintroll, with Snufkin representing her old love (he, just like Snufkin, would travel and leave a lot) and Moomintroll representing herself. It's obviously not a happy ending (between herself and her old love), and although things seem to point towards unrequited feelings, at least from Snufkin, I want to pose another possible path.
Perhaps Snufkin doesn't just find the admiration Moomintroll has for him suffocating, but rather he's afraid of his own feelings keeping him trapped in the valley, which obviously goes against his free-spirited nature. His nightmare in Spring Tune shows us that more than anything he's afraid of Moomintroll giving up on him/ moving on. I like to think that scene when Snufkin and Moomintroll see each other again and Snufkin doesn't go for a hug like Moomintroll, is more about him wanting to deny his feelings by trying to keep some distance.
Another point I want to bring up that sort of ties into this, is that scene where Moomintroll and Snufkin are looking at the pond where Moomintroll's boat is still turning counterclockwise (and there's that whole metaphor about things 'changing') Snufkin does something entirely unexpected-- he takes Moomintroll's boat and keeps it. On top of the idea of change being inevitable, I think that also hints at things changing for Snufkin. He isn't materialistic in any way, and yet he consistently makes exceptions when it comes to Moomintroll, opening himself up and showing parts of himself that he doesn't with others. I think Snufkin keeping the boat is his way of always keeping a part of Moomintroll with him.
Anyways, but I definitely agree with Moomintroll having to learn to let Snufkin go, but I wonder if maybe the show is going to continue to pull our expectations right from under us and surprise us with something entirely unexpected? Who knows, maybe Moomintroll has to learn it's okay to let people go but never giving up on them? Like, loving someone no matter where they are or where they go? Idk, I'm not an analyst. 😅
That boat scene has been on my mind ever since I made the videos! Not only does Snufkin take the boat, in the next episode (golden tail) he is seen holding it while the play is rehearsed, but then you never see the boat again. I wonder if it'll make a surprise appearance on season 2? Who knows!

This has spoken to me in so many levels
I've been watching the 90s Moomin's. It just sort of resonated with my soul with is peaceful yet surreal nature and atmosphere. The design of the whole show is also quite interesting. I never thought I would enjoy a cartoon like this, especially since I am pretty chaotic, but Its just great and I love it so much.
I'm finnish so I was introduced to Moomins at age 4 ( in finnish moomin is MUUMi ) and the 90 moomin show is still up on the tv. Now im older (duh) and when I watch moomins only these 3 words come to mind Nostalgia, dank and beatiful.

This is a very well made video!! I was holding off on watching it even after it had been recommended to me a bunch because I had not yet seen the 2019 version, but a little bit ago I finally had the chance to watch season one so I came back to watch this. I love how you explored the themes! To me it’s super fun to break down bits of media but I often find it hard to do so on my own so seeing others making videos like these makes me super happy!!
I grew up watching the 80s version and when I visited my friend in Finland a while ago and told him this, he was outraged, he immediately got out his dvd for the 90s version and oh my gosh, I couldn’t understand a word they were saying (being only in Finnish and Swedish), but it was still so cute and funny and just feckin *pure*

I lost my best friend of six years due to an extreme argument. Since we had gotten into everything together, it was hard to not be reminded of her because everything I had once enjoyed was tainted. That's when I discovered the moomins, and got involved. I watched the 90s version first before moving on to Moominvalley, and that episode ...it really hurt.

I found this by finding a video of an extrovert playing an introvert.. aka this show in the 90s.... why and why TH-cam recommended it to me I don't know but they did a good job also this is a series done right that's adapted from books and the 90s.... very well... I've never read the books but it looks like a good tv show

5:17 I really like your thoughts on this. As someone who's no where near confrontational and hates being a downer, I know how hard it must be for Moomin. When people pick up on you being soft spoken, reserved or a keeper of peace they like to test how far they can push you before you lash out. It's hard breaking out of this disposition but eventually you blow up because people are threatening your psyche and serenity.
