This video is about the no-rack version (E type - no mudguards and L type - mudguards but no rack) of the Brompton - and the roller wheels used by them
We will be making another video shortly about the rack version of the roller wheels (as this is slightly more complex with the introduction of the newer version of the rack)
This shows the three types of roller wheels:
Conical
Current standard (as at 2019)
Eazy wheels - actually discontinued as a factory option but still available as a spare part

Just when I thought this bike was well engineered and of best quality parts. There will always be people out there with great minds and creativity than the highly paid designers!
Yes, Highly paid designers who clearly never wheeled a Brompton along on the original wheels with the suspension block dragging on the ground, just like what had been happening to the Orange bike above, before the new bigger wheels!!
I just installed Easywheels on my 2021 H6R: should have watched your video before, instead of after because I would have released the bungee first. Loved it! I have to say that the asymmetry and weird washer combinations are peculiar, and, in my opinion, quintessentially British.
The way you pull the brompton by its handle bar is interesting. I found it a little bit difficult especially when you have the bag attached to it because it's too heavy on one side and always fall to that side when you didnt hold the bike. It happened to even if I use the easy wheen extender
With handlebars up...Push it as a shopping cart...to turn...force the handlebars down..rocking the front trolley wheels off the ground and turn... balance the stuff in the bag to keep it upright...carried about 3 bags of groceries.
I have a 2002 Brompton that I purchased "2nd" hand. I have been upgrading little by little. I was going to change the conical wheels to easy wheels and when I went in with the Allen key......
the wheels are bolted in with a flat head screw. I had not noticed before. I tried to remove but both bolts are quite hard to get out. I applied some WD-40 Silicone Lubricant spray and I hope they will come out. I will try again tomorrow. 😵💫
I’ve recently put the easy wheels on my electric Brompton as I kept hitting my heels on the standard wheels. The easy wheels have made it so much easier to move my Brompton when folded and I don’t hit my heels on them when riding but it is not very stable and when I put it in the stand position (back wheel tucked under) the bike tipped over, luckily it doesn’t seem to have suffered much damage just a few scratches 😭

A lot of people have fitted racks to their electrics, which makes them a little more stable.
It should be noted that the Eazy Wheels cannot be fitted to the Brompton Electric without a rack. The heavier front wheel actually acts as a 4th roller when folded and will tip sideways if you fit larger ones. I don't know what the balance is like with a rack and I know you can get extending wheels on one side so that might be a solution.

Hi, thanks for the video. Is it normal for the front wheel to roll while it's in shopping cart mode? I'm using the out of the box wheels that came with my Brompton.
Would it be feasible to just use one washer between the axle and the wheel? I know it would make the standing bike slightly less stable but I assume it would reduce heel strike occurring. Thanks for another great video :-)
I reckon one washer should be under the bolt head and the rest next to the frame
Are mudguards necessary? without mudguards will bike work as a shopping trolley? No mudguards = no small wheel at the back-mudguard. Regards Daniel
Well, if you don't have mudguards you get wet (and road muck) over everything. We rode some asphalt trails at Bedgbury Forest and my wife had lost the little rubber device on the end of the back mudguard. We soon discovered how efficient it was for such a small item. A LOT of thought has gone into Bromptons over the years and there's constant upgrades, most of them retro-fittable (although can be expensive if you just go for"looks"). The newer cranks enable just the sprocket to be swapped, but you also need a new bottom bearing as the taper is different. Brilliant Bikes were BRILLANT at supplying the new parts, plus advice!
Ended up with rollerblade wheels.
Larger, thicker, comes with bearings, meaning easier to roll when folded.
Most important, a lot more cheaper.
Brompton wheels(either official or third party) are just rip offs

I ended up with the Brompton easy wheels just because two bike stores, one being the Brompton Junction where I bought my bike told me that the metal wheels or another hard material may cause stress to the frame as they wouldn't fail before any damage occurred to the frame. They said I should go with the Brompton Eazy Wheels instead since they are plastic. That’s why I ended up with them plus they were only $20.
Did you say it forces the mudguard stays out of the roller clip on the mudguard? No I didn't think you did lol, but it does when you fold the bike.
With a brompton with mudguard but no rack - I am thinking of getting the easy wheels and extender, but do you think it is worth also replacing the small mudguard wheel with a larger double wheeled one so that I can roll it, or will this damage the mudguard by having too much weight?

I noticed some resistance when trying to screw in the bolt for the Eazy wheels on and so I stopped. Is that normal?
If You try to screw the bolt in without a wheel, and gives the thread some oil! - you may see how far in they go. And using the told moments for the bolts, they won't come loose, trust me! If wanted, use Locktite or similar. When I replace my cars wheel bolts, I have given them copper- or graphite lubricant, to make sure they don't get stuck in the thread, and the correct tightening force. I have never lost a wheel!
Had the original conical wheels. They were horrible because they scraped my skin on the inner ankle if I didnt wear socks. Promptly changed them to EZ wheels

The four washers space the wheels out further to add a tiny bit to the stability.
I am intending to use 2 x 82mm normal wheels n 2 x 60mm onmi wheels for the front for manoeuvring, do u think it works?

A unique selling point which Brompton have missed over the years is the rear rack. It’s virtually useless for carrying any load, however, where it really comes into its own is stability of the bike on the train. If you’ve got the rear rack, it makes it much more stable & you can twist the seat sideways & sit on the cross bar when there are no train seats - virtually every day !! hello my bike even with easy wheels it make noise the front wheel touch that part for the speed in the back do you think that its need maintenance

The small original ones are really, really useless, as they can't roll on anything but a totally flat sueface! I have just found and bought a set of: 10 cm wheels for test!

@@brilliantbikes I'm not sure it would work, but audio software can help reduce/remove the noise. You would need a few seconds of recording of the road without your speech on, for the algorithm to identify what "road noise" is like. :)
