Thank you so much for sharing your creative spark, I'm so excited to make my own dice and friends are already coming to me with ideas of dice they have dreamed about. WOOO! My husband helped me build my pressure pot last week! This seems like a simpler way to make dice molds by far. Going to try this build out this weekend!
Loved the vid! I am so glad I watched this before making new molds because with this method I don't have to ruin some dices and I can stop using tape to seal, which is a nightmare... Many times I don't place it correctly and I end up with an unnusable dice (I can use them for jewelry so no big deal but still). 😊 BTW the dragonfly does say it is a top coat so you are supposed to ink the dice with a base color and then ink with the dragonfly paint. 👍

I'm sure other people have already said this, but that dragonfly glaze works better more as a top coat than a base color. These are gorgeous, great job. :)
Try talcum poweder on the mold to make it easier slip in and out the cups. I think the red cup is pretty nice as its like a snap fit joint that will definetly hold the mold in the right position.
Very good tip for the mica powder, I was thinking of buying some shiny silver drops but I already have the powder and didn't think of that ! Do you only use zona papers now for sanding ?
These dice came out so gorgeous!! Has someone made an *out of this world* joke yet? Gives me definite *galaxy* brain watching your videos, they're so informative! I'm excited to fill my *space* up with dice materials and get started making my own sometime soon. I wonder what it would look like if you gave some galaxy dice a liquid glitter core, like a pink dice with blue or lilac inside for a sort of pastel galaxy feel? It'd make them the *star* of the show. Either way. I do also wonder if you should just be using the Dragonfly paint over top a matte color, I don't know if black would work but on top of violet it would kind of make it shine. Colors are super hard :x It's all *nova* to me!
Hey, random idea for a use to all your excess resin. How about making tokens? You have a 3D printer, you could just take your dice goblin and put it into a reverse coin mold, that way you could pour your extra resin there and make it a "collector set" kind of thing, giving you not only a bonus item per set, but also it would be a good way of displaying the material.
The dragonfly one if you read the label is a top coat! I had that same thought last night when I bought it and got it home for something else completely different and it works great over top of other colors lol.
So I imagine that minimizing how much you cut out the master will reduce flashing, but would require more bending of the mild to get out. Does this lead to a noticeable more wear to the mold? This this a potential trade off between flashing and long term use of the mold?
Not really, as the silicone is pretty darn durable. If you used a higher number silicone, like sorta clear 37 or something, then maybe, as that makes them less flexible. You just need to have a large enough opening to not have to strain the mold when pushing the dice out :)
If you don't have a hole in your dice, where is the best place to glue the funnel to the dice? A corner, or a flat edge? Or somewhere else? Or do I need a hole in the dice for this to work?
I think using more silicone for a mold that you use 50 times but wasting less resin each time, is a good trade off. Plus I lack finesse so this mold style looks like a winner for me!
I love space dice and these are beautiful. I'd be interested in seeing you make a video comparing dice making with vs without a pressure pot. In some videos I know you've said they aren't a requirement, they just eliminate bubbles and lower the risk of your dice messing up, so I think it'd be interesting to see how the methods differ and the success rate of not using a pressure pot.
I sort of did something similar to this but instead of a galaxy style dice I made sort of a Evocation/Fireside dice with oranges and some ashes mixed into the resin. Although the ashes darkened the resin a little more than I would have liked they look really nice especially with the antique white paint I used for the numbers. Just wish I had more time/money/space so that I could do more but thanks Rybo for getting me into this hobby!
If you're having trouble getting the molds in and out of the cups, powdering them can make it a lot easier. (either baby powder or powdered sugar works)
Regarding the Dragon Glaze. One thing I learned was using it on top of a layer of paint. So do the numbers in whatever colour, let it dry, and then put the glaze on top using your finger wipe technique. It’s really neat looking!
You're just killin' it! These look GREAT! Question! I remember a video where making molds with a pressure pot caused your dice to come out with tiny spikes, and it turned out you had to use a vacuum pot... although you don't have that problem here! How did you avoid that?
For one-off and testing molds I've found a thing called Composimold, which is a meltable, reusable mold material. It's not quite as durable as the Sorta-Clear, but it's still great for testing mold techniques. You just melt it in the microwave for 10 seconds and pour over, and the mold is ready as soon as it cools down, about 30 minutes. You should check it out, I recommend it to anyone just starting out and liable to mess up their first (or second, or fifth if you're me) try at moldmaking.
I must have spaced out because I waited way too long before watching the video. Seriously great video again, I'll probably try that method for molds next time, looks relatively easy. And I absolutely love the paint line from that sapphire blue. I got a kit with 8 different metallic colors from them and I absolutely love them. The emerald one is actually really great.
I was planning on making my first dice molds this weekend, now I'm rethinking how I'm going to do that! How high above the bottom of the cup should the die be to provide enough structure to the mold?
I'd put the shimmer paint over the blue one. I find those glittery paints do great as an accent but not so much the main "color" Because it's technically clear. I've mixed those paints with others to make the base paint have the shimmers but I've over all found just doing separate coats works better. (I did it like two three days ago and just had to take the glitter/shimmer paint and go over the mixed batch anyway so trust me. Different coats)
I find the dragonfly glaze is best applied with a makeup sponge or melamine foam (magic eraser stuff) as it soaks up a lot of the medium but still applies the glitter, you definitely want to put it on over black :) not sure that helps with the inking but you might find some other cool use for it.
For the clear glitter paint, my first thought was to ink the die with the blue ink, letting it dry (or not. Mixed might be cooler), and then painting on the clear paint
If you wanted, you could paint the 20 on the Galaxy Die gold so it’s like “the stars aligned in your favor” or “my lucky star is shining” or something along the lines.
Hey! I have that dragonfly glaze from the michaels I work at! Try painting the numbers black, and then go over it a few layers with the glaze and you'll see it's cool shimmery effect.
Any thoughts on how to darken up that blue without loosing the sheen? I’m planning on using it for a project, but I want a darker blue than this. Should I just use regular unsparkly black acrylic? (Side note: the gold deco art paint from the same line is suuuuuper thin. It takes big globs of paint to have any gold show up, otherwise you’re just left with a clear sparkly streak. The purple is *gorgeous* though!)
I really like this hanging technique, I might have to try this! The tape doesn't work well for me, and I hate using the rubber bands. I might have to get some paper cups. Plus, having the funnel sprue seems much better than the tiny hole for the toothpick sprue... Great looking dice.
That dragonfly paint if I remember correctly is more of a glaze/sealer for the paint. I ended up using that and some citadel paint for one of my dice sets
Is there any reason you don’t use one of those mini battery powered stick blenders when mixing resin or silicone? I’ve always wondered if they would make the process easier or if they might overmix
just an idea. if you are having issues with the red solo cups and getting them in and out, you could just Vaseline them up, right? it would only mess up the silicone when it is curing if i remember from some of your previous videos.
Wow, this is kinda eerie. lol I'm currently working on a mold system very similar to this. I just bought a pen holder off aliexpress that's about the size of the solo cup, and it just arrived the other day and haven't had the chance to do this... but my thought was to use it to make a cylinder that I could use to make molds with by leaving off the bottom of the cup, so it's just a straight cylinder. This can be used by putting it on packing tape with hot glue, or using a reusable bottom that can be easily attached to the cylinder. This way you can just take off the tape or bottom and push the mold out. Also when you go to cast the dice, you slide the mold back into the cylinder so you don't need tape or what-have-you. This way you have a reusable and recastable mold housing that can be easily made to the size of the dice you are trying to cast and can save on silicone. In theory it should work exactly like the Dixie cup you used for this, but you don't need the extra inch or two of silicone on the bottom of the cup. On top of that, part of my plan was to use a d4 that I sanded a corner off of as a base I can attach to the master dice (similar to how you use the pipette) so have a reusable base that funnels in better than a toothpick.
It really stinks that I haven't been able to buy dice making stuff yet but I'm kinda glad cause this method looks a lot easier than the usual methods xD Definitely gonna try this and cap/squish molds when I'm able to start
So, what you're saying is... I should not start trying to make dice for another year or so, and should just wait for you to test every method ever out and perfect them. Got it!
I HAVE A QUESTION!!! Have you ever used tyedye powder in resin? Like when you buy those cheap bottles of tyedye at Walmart? And you’re supposed to put water in them? But instead of putting water you just add the powder to the resin? Can you see if that works? Because that would be hella cool!!
Dragon fly glaze is not a paint and dries clear with super fine glitter that changes color based on the angle light hits it, i have used it to add into resin a drop or two will do for a fun little touch or you can coat your dice in the stuff but it isn't a smooth finish
Have you ever tried prepainting the numbers? basicly, you take a brush and paint the silicone into all the places you might be worried it could catch bubbles before casting the mould
Clicked this video to see the new mold making technique, stayed for the galaxy dice. I made some new molds this way using 5oz dixie cups and they work soooo much better than my previous molds, and use soooooo much less silicone
Perhaps the clear glitter paint would look great on top of already inked dice
^ Might have to give that a shot :)

Would it maybe be possible to use the glitter paint over another color to give it a sparkly finnish?
Very cool dice eitherway.
If you wanted, you could paint the 20 on the Galaxy Die gold so it’s like “the stars aligned in your favor” or “my lucky star is shining” or something along the lines.
These are awesome! I love space so these are perfect for me!
Hey Rybo, do you still need the respirator if you're working outside? I have a back porch that might work if the respirator isn't needed outside.
Hey! I have that dragonfly glaze from the michaels I work at! Try painting the numbers black, and then go over it a few layers with the glaze and you'll see it's cool shimmery effect.
I'll give that a shot :) I should have looked up the best way to use this haha
Any thoughts on how to darken up that blue without loosing the sheen? I’m planning on using it for a project, but I want a darker blue than this. Should I just use regular unsparkly black acrylic? (Side note: the gold deco art paint from the same line is suuuuuper thin. It takes big globs of paint to have any gold show up, otherwise you’re just left with a clear sparkly streak. The purple is *gorgeous* though!)
Fantastic also I love the dice goblin animation super adorable 😍 not sure why I've missed that.
My God! Six galaxy puns in one intro! That's out of this world.
It really stinks that I haven't been able to buy dice making stuff yet but I'm kinda glad cause this method looks a lot easier than the usual methods xD
Definitely gonna try this and cap/squish molds when I'm able to start
So, what you're saying is... I should not start trying to make dice for another year or so, and should just wait for you to test every method ever out and perfect them. Got it!
Gorgeous dice! Love them
Those are soooo pretty!! I've been wanting to do galaxy dice for a while now but UNFORTUNATELY I'm out of resin and gloves so I need more.
Really like this mould method! If I end up making my own, I'll definitely use it
On point hand flourish, never late, always there when it needs to be.
Love this method it looks more approachable
Absolutely, less drilling and scary stuff :)
That glaze probably needs several coats over a silver base layer to look like the cap.
Next Time on Rybonator: Molding and casting 40K figures to save $40k
Dragon fly glaze is not a paint and dries clear with super fine glitter that changes color based on the angle light hits it, i have used it to add into resin a drop or two will do for a fun little touch or you can coat your dice in the stuff but it isn't a smooth finish
I loved all of the dice I've watched you make so far but these are by far my favorite! I really hope you soon start selling some of the ones you make.
Have you ever tried prepainting the numbers?
basicly, you take a brush and paint the silicone into all the places you might be worried it could catch bubbles before casting the mould
Ah, at long last. We finally get some sick galaxy dice!
It's been a long time coming, but now we nailed it :)
Clicked this video to see the new mold making technique, stayed for the galaxy dice. I made some new molds this way using 5oz dixie cups and they work soooo much better than my previous molds, and use soooooo much less silicone
