Nothing like finding a demon living in hut, the spot (one square of swamp) where you needed to forage for mandrake or nightshade during the dark of both moons (don't remember which) and finding a possible follower on a ship called Ararat.

Since Splat didn't explain it. You can hit q to go into stealth, with stealth each movement will take more time, as noted by the feet symbol, you'll burn less oil in movement, and your detection range will get smaller, it can shrink to just around your character by waiting once, additional waits will make it grow a bit, in sneak mode you'll move through grass without breaking it and if you make a sneak attack, you'll do additional damage. You can use this to run from something with your light on, get closer to some grass or the sides of a wall, go into stealth, go through the grass, or move along the wall, and lose your target. Also, while in stealth, you'll try regenerate poise faster. You'll know your target cannot see you anymore from a blinking eye icon over it.

It’s hard to pin down a single influence for this game. I can see where the Ultima comparisons come in. The graphics are vaguely reminiscent of those Apple II or Amiga games from the mid to late 1980’s, by Origin Systems, including the original Wasteland, Autoduel, and Ultimas 3 to 5. Possibly some elements of Windwalker as well. However, the UI and stats screen are busier than any RPG from that era. Quite a bit more going on beneath the hood than in those venerable titles.

It might be a game interesting for people who prefer gameplay over High-End Visuals. Maybe younger people have a different opinion. I don't know. What I know: Only AAA-Studios can deliver both (gameplay and high end visuals) budget wise but fail to do so most of the time. What we see here is the true heart of a game and all effort is put into gameplay. The visuals are not so important. They are just a theme to the core game that everybody is able to provide. It's not hard to make great visuals. It's just too expensive to pay license for Assets and Unreal Engine and too much work to design everything yourself and you still need the Engine License. That said. Every studio can make a game look nice if you give them he money. But only few people can develop a game core with so much love and cleverness based on a vision and make it come true. So we should never judge a game by it's visuals except if it was made by an AAA-Studio. If AAA deliver poor visuals then they just want your money with minimum work. But this is just epic. Big Respect for this work!!

I LOVE these visually minimalistic games. They don't use a lot of color or fidelity to tell a story, but every square has every bit of information you need to know exactly what is going on for that turn. Caves of QUD is another excellent example of this minimalistic visual style. Undistracted by high fidelity, there's SO much time/effort to give to DEPTH and quality of gameplay. Looking forward to checking this free gem out this evening!

Since this has been asked about a few times, I guess I should explain something. In Moonring there are no children (not very realistic, I know). There is no romance (nor is that). Humans crawl, pale, naked, and mindless from the earth itself: a new one born each time there is a death (nope - that neither). Anyone can wear anything because there is no gender (or that). There is no sex (or that). Technically, *everyone* in it is ASE and NB (or that).
If you think that someone being referred to as 'they' in a genderless, sexless fantasy world is somehow not appropriate, then you probably shouldn't play this game because it's definitely not realistic. This game is for people who can see a talking goose and a vampire goddess who demands people give up pie and eat blood without feeling they are somehow being personally attacked.

I remember the moment I started loving those text MUDs was when I wandered off where I shouldn't go and got my face ripped off and murdered, then later went back, found my own face and wore it until I tested to see if the "eat" command worked on it. So long story short, it was when I learned I had the freedom to eat my own face.

Thanks for covering this game! I've been looking for an Ultima-inspired game for ages and this is it! Love the U5 graphics and modern gameplay! I can't believe it's free!

When I look at the main menu and it says Moonring. I always read it as MORNING, and I'm like... yes, morning!

Free? Amazing! The color pallet is ugly as heck though lol. I remember it, but we didn't have to do purple and green.

Back in time, some games were released as freeware, like NETHACK! And what a masterpiece it is still today. And sometimes they just asked to pay if you want to.
Aaaa... I finished Ultima III. One of the few games I actually did. Started Ultima IV too, but something interrupted that game play.
    Good times!

Ahh the good ole days of Ultima, Bards tale, Eye of the Beholder, and Pool of Radiance.
My first delve into dungeon games was probably Tunnels of Doom or AD&D for Intelevision.

Tell me when you find an actual isekai game that let's you start as any kind of race with the potential to evolve plus hidden stats unlocked by research or specialising into specific skill trees.
So say after killing 200 slimes you then unlock the potential to unlock a "slime killer" ability that increases damage to slimes a flat 15% or you build a town and get abilities and passives that specifically affect that

Oh man. I remember the questing in og Everquest with that chat system. Some had hidden words/questions too. Im not sure gow some people figured then out without a wiki. Kinda miss that system. Drew you into the game. You werent just chasing ? And ! For quests.

Not a native English speaker, but the only reason I know what the term "torpor" means is that Vampire: The Masquerade related games use it to describe a vampire that has been forced to sleep by lack of blood. Don't think I've ever heard the word used in any other setting before.

Constant use of "they" for every character is off-putting. Looks sharp and the UI is slick though. Is it a roguelike or is it a fixed world? Is there a story? The exploration seems well done at any rate.

I do like the colourful style and the unique lore but its definitely not a game I could see myself having the strength to play for long term. I'm at the point in my life and deafness that I need instant gratification. Though I do appreciate the text log...not many games nowadays have good CC.
