  • In our final episode of Crash Course Sociology we are going to talk about what the health care system in the US looks like, the five A’s of health care accessibility, and a couple of contributing factors to the affordability of health care: fee for service care and the structure of our health insurance system which encourage higher spending.

    Nice job Nicole! Hopefully we will see more of you in the future. About a year ago I thought to myself " I really don't know much about sociology, I wonder what's on TH-cam?" And what I found was episode 1 of this course shortly after it was uploaded. I've watched every one since. Thanks Crash Course people!

    Since I'm studying social medicine as a subject at the moment, I found it amazing that health was tackled under the circumstances of social factors if nothing but in at least 3 of your videos. Most people find the subject extremely boring and non crucial for a future medical knowledge but social medicine actually in reality is the background of everything that happened, you can't even write a common scientific paper without tackling some of the important health indicators these days. Thanks for making them and I really expect to see more cause book studying this is much harder and there are only a few videos on this subject than for example anatomy or biochemistry or any clinical branches. Best wishes from Serbia

      Same in Italy. Ok we pay a bit higher taxes but then for health care we pay almost nothing. Health care should not be a business in which doctors charge astronomical bills and if you can’t pay you can die. Greedy American doctors and hospitals should be controlled.

    The US: Total healthcare cost, all parties included, about $9850 per citizen per year.
    Norway: Total healthcare cost, all parties included, about $4400 per citizen per year.
    (2016 numbers)
    I'm perfectly fine with paying slightly more taxes than the average US citizen, in order to have full and "free" access to some of the best healthcare in the World. :)

      I way prefer the Norwegian system, but i have to note that this stat is skewed because it doesn't consider the other "safety net" costs Norwegians pay in taxes that act as secondary supports for healthcare, like housing and food subsidies, etc, which have major positive benefits for the overall health of the nation

      I'm not. I pay about $700 for health insurance in the US plus some amount for Medicare which I don't get to use. If you want it in taxes, more power to you. I don't. Pay for your system yourself.

    • @Rallarberg
      @Rallarberg 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      James Adams If you pay insurance, you pay for other people's healthcare as well. The difference from gov taxing paying for healthcare, is that _everyone_ has access. And it's cheaper for you, as _everyone_ are contributing. It's also quite possible that the fact that private companies aren't setting the prices on healthcare, makes it even cheaper for you.
      Bottom line is, in either case you pay for it "yourself". But you don't.

    It’s so crazy to think that some countries deny people of healthcare if they can’t afford it. In the UK we never pay for any treatment or visits to the doctor, we just pay for prescriptions and those are capped at like £8 per item. It just comes out of our income tax. How is it not covered by income tax there already? 🤦🏻‍♀️

  • @somethingandapie

    I find the very concept of 'a very costly illness' to be absurd. Every time I hear about the American "system" I feel so grateful to have grown up taking universal coverage for granted. I hadn't even heard the term universal coverage, because that would mean non-universal coverage was a possibility and it's not. It's not a discussion, it's not up for debate: health care is a right.

    • @JoinTheTemple
      @JoinTheTemple 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Han Silly - no it isn't a right, it is a privilege. There, I have turned it into a discussion and debate. It cannot be a right because you don't have the rights to other people's time and effort. If you believe that you do, you essentially believe in a version of slavery. Or at the very least indentured servitude.

    • @uglyawesome

    • @somethingandapie

      Hm, that was an interesting way to spell 'hyperbole'. Did I say health care providers wouldn't get payed for their work? That would be pretty dumb, wouldn't it! Good thing it's not like that at all!
      By 'right' I mean that we, as a society, have decided that all citizens should have equal access to health care, that basic health safety is an essential part of the freedom to live a good life. We all collectively pay for this through taxes (which I suppose you could view as a macro scale insurance pool, if you want). So I guess if you're one of those people who think all taxation is theft then you wouldn't enjoy this system, but here, as I said, it's not even up for debate (and not because it's a totalitarian communist dictatorship either, but because it's a foregone conclusion and any politician to question it would be out on their arse pretty much immediately)
      I'll agree with you on one thing though: it is indeed a privilege to live a place where medical bankruptcies don't exist.

      You American's have your "rights to...", for instance, the right to bear arms. The rest of the world is more interested in "rights from..." like, say people with mental health issues, or a history of violence, having access to firearms. Herd immunity may sound like "godless socialism" to you. That's OK. Our life expectancy is greater than yours.

      I would bet that's a low estimate. There's likely a visit to the emergency room, x-rays, surgery to set the bone (might use titanium in the reconstruction), time in the hospital, casting, physical therapy, follow ups with additional x-rays. I'd be shocked if the total price came in under $20K. The out of pocket to someone in the US with good insurance might come to only $2K. And yes, our health care system is insane.

    Unlike many other markets, demand for healthcare is not discretionary, when your ill you either access healthcare or get worse. Key Government role is in ensuring the wellbeing of the whole population. This is why most developed countries have a tax/centrally collected funded healthcare system. It's just more effective at delivering better health outcomes affordably to everyone and protects the weak, vulnerable and poor.

    • @ExPwner
      @ExPwner 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      False. Most care is not emergency so people can shop around and prepare for their expenses. Further, there is no such "role" of government. And also wrong about government being more effective. It isn't.

      Healthcare in the US is hell. If I have to choose between the State and greedy insurance companies/lobbyist to manage my access to health I'd choose state any time. Things here in France run smoothly, there are problems, of course, but they are just small annoyances if one compares.

    I have visited the USA for the first time and was amazed how bad the whole healthcare system is. I wear contact lenses and to get them in there costs way more and I needed a +150dollars eye doctors-note in stead of just buying them cheap in many stores like I can in the Netherlands. I had type of aspirin with me what also seemed to be a task to just buy there. heard personal health horror stories like a girl who could not go the the hospital when our plane got canceled because it would cost her tons of money instead of just going to the hospital for free in her own country. Just because the plane had a delay so she had to risk it. I also was amazed by the amount of different laxatives in stores and that I could buy. Or diabetic equipment at wallmart what I do need to get from a pharmacy. And the questionable medicine commercials on tv for things that are as far as I know clearly are not a thing like "stress sweat" or other problems I never even heard about, and that all seemed to be able to kill you if your unlucky with the side effects. Other then that, I had a great trip!

    I live in a country with universal healthcare. A government purchasing body buys our drugs from the pharmas, then sells them to the public. Almost everything is US$3 per prescription - from aspirin to HIV medicine (but not cosmetic things). And the pharmaceutical companies aren't coerced, they sell voluntarily. Turns out they still make a profit at lower prices. They charge more in the US cos they can.
    The US could go half-way to a proper public healthcare by keeping private doctors and private hospitals, but establishing a govt purchasing body to deal with the pharmas. Cos I hear hospitals in the US will charge you guys like $4 for a single tylenol! And all this happens because of corrupt legislators and corrupt think tanks that pump out propaganda that flies in the face of all other developed nations.

      Why should I pay people health treatment?! That is unfair. Justice is each one paying for their one treatment.

      Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller You may be right that it's not the FAIR thing to, but that doesn't mean it's not the RIGHT thing to do. Like it or not, the health of others doesn't just affect them; it can have an effect on society as a whole. If there is a large enough group of people who are scared away from clinics because of medical costs, then production over the whole society begins to decline. If you want your society to be as successful as possible, then isn't it then worth it to pay a little bit to ensure that it happens?

    We put our money in a risk pool, and as soon as you break your leg, your insurance company tells you that you didn't sign the proper form that no one told you about, but it was on display in a cellar with no light or stairs in a locked filing cabinet in an unused lavatory with a sign saying "beware of the leopard." And you don't find out they're not going to pay their share of the bill until AFTER the unpaid portion of the doctor's bill has been forwarded to a collection agency whose only purpose it to bother people to pay mystery bills like an overaggressive televangelist who has your home phone number. Meanwhile, your leg isn't getting any better, but you're still expected to buy health insurance, like a con that turns into a robbery halfway through. At the same time, the doctors aren't worried about their patients not being able to pay their bills, because some money is going to eventually show up from somewhere, so what's the risk to them if they charge a zillion dollars for the air that you breathed in the waiting room, and... you know what? Maybe it would be simpler if they just came up to me with a gun and demanded my wallet every time I felt a little sick.

    Man I am disappointed that you ended this here. Why? This course has been exclusively America-centric (not counting the theories, which were mostly a history lesson). Isn't there some place I can get sociology information on, say, European, Asian, or African countries? Knowing about the inner workings of other societies is extremely important when confronting issues with ours.

      Healthcare is a service just like any other. Calling it "horrific" doesn't absolve the economic idiocy of treating it like it isn't.
