Your father is right. I'm French and in my country, the word corresponding to "entertainment" in French is "divertissement" whose etymology comes from the latin word "divertire" (in the sense of moving away in another direction or giving something a different meaning from what it is) and will give today the French word "divertir", which means "to divert" in english. Among its synonyms, you have "switch", "occupy", "amuse", "deflect", "deviate" and of course "distract".

The classic celebrities did one simple thing which modern celebrities stopped. Aloofness. Classic celebrities were more cutoff and separated from society. They didn't lecture the public about their beliefs, politics and ideologies. Everything was fluff. When appearing on talk shows they would do skits, or monologue over a humorous story. If they discussed anything personal, they would talk about their diet, or something from their childhood. They maintained a mysterious quality about themselves without appearing unfriendly or guarded. It isn't an overnight change to what we have now. I think celebrities began exposing more of their natural selves in the 80s/90s and by the 2010s they had become insufferable and now that they're obsessed with politics and ideology no one wants to be in the same room with them let alone continue to adore them as special people.

Well if people are going to be gullible enough to be influenced by them (which is why the word influencer is such a cherry on top of what celebrity is) then yeah, people like Barbara Walters and Howard Stern should break the fourth wall and humanize them.

You know the song "video killed the radio star?"
That, but instead it's "social media killed the star."
Once they were able to air literally everything about what they thought, did, ate for dinner, people ate it up for a little bit, but one day people woke up and realized how big headed and self important and out of touch these people were.
They're not like you or me, or even the privileged doctor down the street. He actually has to work hard at what he does to keep his income and not kill anybody. Not celebrities.

James Rolfe, Nikola Tesla, and Phyllis from The Office do not deserve this. And while we're at it I don't either! First of all, I believe we should reserve our highest admiration for the people around us, not billionaires, famous athletes, or celebrities. That being said, if you think about it, Zuckerberg and Bezos for example (despite my personal dislike for both) have undeniably revolutionized aspects of our daily lives. In comparison, what have Zendaya, Kim Kardashian, or Taylor Swift contributed? We now all use online marketplaces for shopping and social media for communication, often on a daily or weekly basis, and both of those things make our lives easier. But we can easily live without knowing which cosmetic procedures or makeup trends the Jenners are promoting at the moment

Maybe if celebrities did more to help the common person, then we'd actually care about them and they'd still be relevant. Taylor Swift with her 1 billion+ empire could easily help underprivileged kids for example, but she chooses not to and hoards her wealth instead. During the 2010's, Miley Cyrus started a charity called Happy Hippie, an organization to help homeless youth, and she even brought one of the kids she helped on stage with her at an awards show. This is the type of behavior we should be seeing from celebrities - helping the less fortunate and trying to make a positive impact on the world. The part where Beyonce says 'Are you ready to sing a new song' is so cringe in how manufactured it is. Oh she's a SINGER, so she must make a SONG metaphor. Get it?! And in J.Lo's 'endorsement', you could see her reading off the teleprompter while fake emoting and crying. These people don't even realise how ridiculous they are.

Unlike Hulk Hugan ripping off his shirt at Trumps rally's and asking the audience if they want to see him pick up a 60 year old woman and throw her down? Trumps supporters are clueless hypocrites in need of a psychotherapist.

Chappell roan is so unlikeable, it's crazy. I always thought as a ew artist, it was your aim to be as endearing as possible.

3:31 Tbf to that other person, Gaga was extremely insufferable in interviews back in the 00's and is also extremely narcissitic/fake/steals material (she skinwalked now-defunct artist Lina Morgana, who is the one that was actually subversive, Gaga was carefully manufactured by Interscope which is why none of her pre-deal stuff looks or sounds like her post-debut.)
If TikTok and live-streaming had been a thing back in the 00's, Gaga absolutely would've plummeted the same way, if not worse. Hell, people outside her hardcore fans dislike her NOW. There's a reason she fell off and other artists like Taylor Swift, who is actually likeable, took the spotlight.

I don’t understand why people dislike Chappell Roan after those incidents. People have been saying what she said before. I think people will realize she was right the whole time in a few years.

I think it's disconnected w her looks -she tries too hard. I never liked Gaga to begin with and Chappell comes off a bit microwaved Gaga. Shock value is overrated.

@@purpurina5663 ive only known her cos of her looks, it's different (especially the knight-inspired outfits). however i felt, like what you said, shes trying too hard.
the other day i just let TH-cam music on autoplay and heard this annoying song that sounds pretentious af, checked what song it is, and unsurprisingly, it's her. first song ive listened to and i hated it 😂

@@purpurina5663Come to think of it, Chappell isn’t really that original. I thought about it today; Lady Gaga was doing the whole activism and music before Chappell came along.
