Dear Felix. I love this. I worked with Eartha Kitt in the late 1970s. She was wonderful. Warm, funny, friendly, down-to-earth. An all around lovely person. And what a performer !!
Lucky you! I remember going to a Racing Car Exhibition in London in the late 70s & seeing Eartha Kitt & the actor Robert Beatty on an exhibition stand. (I'm certain it was a Racing Car Exhibition & I think it was literally on the River Thames, on a very large ex navy boat? I didn't approach them & looking back, I've no idea why I didn't.Tbh, I didn't realise just how great Eartha was at the time. My loss.
Eartha Kitt played Hollywood Roosevelt Cinegrill many times late 80's until its closure early 2000's & each show always a sell-out, luckily went many times through the years and what a sensational performer...
I like Eartha Kitt but the director should have helped her with pacing the song and making it sound like she actually went through those experiences rather than just singing the lyrics.
An Hw I would beg to differ on that. Anyone else singing this song would have benefited from what you said, but I feel that Eartha might be a different kettle all together. The experiences in the song are nowhere near as the real struggles she went through in her own life. She doesn't indulge in those moments but rams through them with brute force and pace, but certainly not without feeling and above all a dry sense of humour, much like she did in her life. Everything boils within her and is presented in one homogenous whole without reducing or highlighting one event more than the other. She is an actor, cabaret artist as well as jazz singer, and I think she does not compromise on any of those things in her delivery. In other words she gets away with doing something unexpected from a classic. And that's pure gold. 😊🙏🏽
I loved Ms. Kitt and saw her perform many times over the years, but she was a singer, not an actress. It's an actor's job to make the lyrics believable, and she couldn't. Not the director's fault, Stephen Sondheim's fault, society's fault....she couldn't relinquish technique and dig within to bring out the truth of the song. It just lies there because she treated it like any other Eartha Kitt night club number.
An Hw I agree!! This song can be very funny, sad, and can hit just about every emotion if performed properly !! The musical director should have worked it out with Ms. Kitt . normally, she delivers, not on this one !! Too bad, its an iconic number ..
