I got dragged along by the hair to see these guys at a quarter full Hammy Odeon in the late seventies. I thought Id hate it. Actually it was one of the best gigs I have ever been to. Total magic!
Awesome, thank you for posting this. Bought "You" when it came out so many years ago... One of the all time great albums......the "Dark Side Of The Moon" of Space Rock.
@aharambol The Grateful Dead get way too much credit. Gong is truly the ultimate hippie band. The sound is way more experimental and "breaking all the rules" that anything the Dead ever put out, and Gong never got commercial.
@@chrischudley4228 Because they both have fierce loyal hippie fan bases but the only difference is their music. The Dead are more folk/country based and Gong have a jazz and space rock approach. If Gong didn't splinter in their heyday 1975, imagine if they were asked to open for The Dead? I think even as both a deadhead and Gong fan, they would have rightly fitted in into the shakedown scene.
@@lenini056Yes. Musically very different but both have strong following in the counter culture. Although GD eventually gained much more wide commercial success. I am a great fan of both bands
thee dead deserve all the credit they got they busted theyre asses for 30 years touring all over the world and got on the radio a coupla times and on tv a few times
They still got it. Allen looks weirder than ever, can easily take the role of a crazy wizard. I suppose that is Gilli Smyth doing the space wisper. She should dress up like Allen, but as a witch. Then her age would become an asset! BTW, "Isle of everywhere" is one of their most magical tunes.
Cardiff last night was rather splendid. But as an occasion, this topped the lot. I'm the idiot you can see who can't stand still over to the right at the front in the long shots.
the grateful dead and gong cant be compared they are totally diff. and i love them both equally. the dead have more of a southern rock sound almost country at times witha little funk and groove in there gong is heavier and spacier plus the hippys in the us are a bit diff than the hippys in the uk and come from a little bit diff. culture. US; blues, jazz, country ,bluegrass, soul,UK had alot of classical and folk mixed in there and are more experimental.
@aharambol thank s indead for the possibiliti to listen to this BEAUTIFULL

it took the director three minutes to figure out that it was Hillage doing the solo
Ha! I was thinking the same thing. This seems to be the curse of every show where the director is not familiar with how live music works.
Yes indeed, what's up with that?
sure...it's the 7th song on the album You released in 1974 with most of all these members you see here.
Stevie hillside village... Gong time ago
I disagree with Dr. Evil - "There's nothing more pathetic than an aging hipster." These geezers sound awesome!
