    You'll be surprised to hear that on one of the very few occasions that I did drop a watch, it happened to be a Tissot Gold dress watch with Hesalite glass. The glass cracked instantly, a small piece of it flying off into the distance. So much for impact resistance of Hesalite.

    Hi Ben. Great review, as always. However, you missed some details here.
    Junkers is no longer (since 2019) produced by Pointtec: their 20 year license to use the Junkers brand expired and the Junkers family decided to do it by themselves (getting the "full enchilada" instead of receiving just royalties from Pointtec...). This is why the brand Iron Annie was born: Pointtec is using it now (not just in "certain countries", as you mentioned) as an alternative to Junkers. BTW, they also created a new brand, Bauhaus. These two will encompass all the models that used to be under the Junkers brand made by Pointtec.
    Also worth mention is the fact that the "new" Junkers are of very poor quality when compared with the ones manufactured by Pointtec. Maybe they will improve with time but, right now, the quality is clearly not at the same level as the Pointtec watches.

    • @Ipeacocks
      @Ipeacocks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. Any links? So now main Junkers site shows "new" Junkers watches?
      Personally I like their Bauhaus watches, going to buy one of them.

    • @Ipeacocks
      @Ipeacocks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The change of direction came about after the parent company Pointtec decided not to renew the Junkers license after a sharp increase in royalty fees was asked for by the brand’s family for the use of its name. "slightly more expensive"?
      The automatic ones cost two and a half times what this clock cost! And at 500€ there are many better alternatives. It's certainly not good value for money.
      This is the problem with the Junkers Bauhaus, it's too expensive for the quartz and not competitive with the automatic.

      what he means is that miyota quartz movements are usually quite cheap, at about 5 pounds on average. They are not bad per se, they are quite reliable and accurate, as all quartz movements are, yet seeing such a movement in a 200 pound watch is what's underwhelming.

    Watches CAN be more than just jewelry. A phone is usually in a pocket, with the display turned off. In order to see what time it is, you have to pull it out, press a button to turn on the display, and then put it back. Glancing at a watch is just easier.
    The design reminds me a lot of the Timex Marlin. And for around the same price, the Marlin has an mechanical movement instead of quartz.
    As to water resistance, I would generally avoid water on ANY watch with a leather band. The case itself might be water resistant, but I wouldn't want to see what water would do to that leather.
    If the price were lower, I would rate this "Cool." I really like the look, but it seems expensive for a quartz.

    Since the mid 2000s watches went from time telling functional devices to bygone fashion accessory. That is when cell phones stopped using an internal clock that had the accuracy of a bad mechanical timex to using the atomic clock in the cell towers. There are limited sections of practicality such as swimming, sports and other things were a watch still is a better choice (at least until they make a 100m rated cell phone). It's a just another thing. In some cases it is "expected" business wear.

Really classy looking watches with the legendary 30L or 302 movements so there's some horological interest in addition to the design. "The most important thing about wrist watches is how they look"
    I couldn't agree more with this
    How a watch looks is probably the single biggest factor for me when deciding whether to buy a watch or not
    That said, why do homages sometimes get so much hatred?
    We've just established that the single most important thing about a watch is how they look, yet when it comes to homages people start diving into all sorts of excuses to hate on them
    "Horological story", "brand heritage", "in house movement", etc are all common excuses plumbed up to justify going for the more "respected" brands, while vilifying homages that literally rocks the same design but at 1/100 of the price

    • @arnaudmeert1527
      @arnaudmeert1527 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not exactly.. I agree to some extend but you must acknowledge that there is something romantic about vintage Omega or JLC movements which were made by hand, with components forged in local factories. If you could choose two equally pretty watches, one with a caliber made by hand in a Swiss factory, the other made by machines in a Chinese mass production facility.. I'd know what to choose.

    • @hiyukelavie2396
      @hiyukelavie2396 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arnaudmeert1527 If both are equally pretty, I indeed know which one to choose - considering that the Swiss made one is probably x100 more expensive than the Chinese made one
      Of course there is something appealing about a handmade Omega or JLC as you said, but the prices of most of these Swiss brands are terribly inflated
      Having said that, I am not opposed to people going for those Swiss luxury brands - if you can afford it and want to indulge in it, by all means, enjoy yourself
      My point was more about how some people vilify homages and Chinese specials, even though in some cases they give you great value for the money you pay - I think there's room for both to exist really, Swiss luxury brands for the prestige (because ultimately not everyone can afford one), and homages/Chinese watches for the value for money

    • @BramiShred
      @BramiShred 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "The most important thing about wrist watches is how they look"
      I agree to this as well. That's why I don't vilify DW or MVMT. If people want to wear those watches and they have the funds for it, them who am I to judge? They like how those watches look, right?
      There's a real fascination as well for "Horological story", "brand heritage", "in house movement" and such terms that you deem as mere excuses. As I see it, there are snobs who hate on homages and lower end watches, and of course there are those who lack the haute horlogerie knowledge to appreciate in-house calibers and brand heritage and so they hate on the higher end timepieces. I say they are all just pots calling kettles black.
      I personally own watches ranging from Casios and Seikos, to swiss pieces from Tudor and IWC. If I'm to advocate something, it's to buy and wear whatever watch that speaks music to your ears. Sure, there's a Casio dress watch better than the DW. If you realized that Casio offers a better value for money, then good for you. However, if you still want that DW just because you don't want to wear a watch from the same company that produces the calculator that you use on your frustrating Calculus exam, then by all means buy and wear that DW in good health. Let haters be haters. In the end, only you can determine the true value of his watch from how it makes you feel.

Then in 2011 someone at Polaris Inc, which didn't even exist when Indian went bust, had a board meeting and decided they could buy that brand and start rehashing some harley copies to make a buck. I believe it's 36mm isn't it? I could be mistaken, but if it's the ladies/unisex one you're referring to, the disadvantage is lack of styles to choose from unfortunately

    Great brand! I've got a junkers ju 52 chrono limited edition. I've seen the anniversary bauhaus but at 2000 euro I couldnt pull the trigger its just to small for my wrist. Mescherschmitt still exist as watch maker. Very good brand just a bit of research and im sure you can find something.

    Ben, to my mind, the connection between the original Junkers company and the Junkers watches of today can be said as tenuous at best. In the watch world in particular, we see a lot of "zombie brands", where a long-defunct brand - usually a renown watch maker from the past - is re-registered by a current firm and thus claiming to be its true successor with all the achievements. Some of them put some efforts into establishing a spiritual connection, like "if the old company never went bust, what would they be making today?" but few bothered to do so. I think a fair few of my vintage watches have similar appearances to this but at more modest outlays, cost of service notwithstanding, but I do like my Accurist Clerkenwell 1946 though.

      @seybertooth9282 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah... in this case, though, they have the great grand-daughter of Hugo Junkers on their homepage. Sure, maybe that's just a stunt but there seem to be SOME connection to the original aircraft brand. Doesn't seem like it's just a re-register by some investment firm with no connection at all.

    The Junkers is beautiful, but with a quartz Miyota, plastic crystal, and plainly finished case, it's just overpriced. They should have at least gone with a Ronda quartz.
    But if I see one on a good sale, I'll pick it up!

    Nice enough but expensive . I'd prefer a Bambino. Thanks for sharing your video. 😆😺

    I love the design, but way too expensive for a cheap quartz movement and no sapphire glass.

    Sorry, but we are talking about a basic quartz watch with an acrylic crystal and a plain leather strap. It doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look particularly good either, and certainly not $200 good.

    I hate their logo, it reminds me of someone on a torture rack. I don’t exactly know why but it keeps me away. And for Gods sake get the second hand to hit the markers at this price point! Cool. Ice cold for the pagani.

      I honestly think, after using some autos I will be sticking with Quartz for the longterm. Quartz just does everything better. I think id rather pay a few hundred for a Quartz that tells time, vs a couple hundred for a watch to be off time every day.
