  • We are on a rescue mission in this weeks video! I came across two guinea pigs on Craigslist in a neglected situation. It was impossible for me to turn away, so I decided to rescue them and let them join The Pig Room. I am taking care of these boys for the next two-three weeks until they go off to their permanent owner. I will be making a bunch of update videos on them before they leave! Hope you guys enjoy :)

I rescued a hamster that I saw online. He was kept in a tiny wire carrier without any hides and no wheel either. It broke my heart, when I got him home and all his natural instincts came out it was amazing seeing him rolling in his sand bath, making burrows and ofc running on his appropriately sized wheel! I'm not sure how long he will live after such a sad start to life I'm just glad he gets to experience the care and love he deserves now.

I rescued a hamster in a similar situation. The family wanted to get rid of the hamster because it was too loud, when I came to pick her up she had only a water bottle and a tiny house, no wonder she made so much noise, she was bored. She had another cage with a really tiny wheel, but the owners told that it was too noisy! It actually damaged her back. She had now an 800 square inches cage and lives her best life with a big 28 cm wheel (she's a Russian). We now use her to make other people aware of what can happen when you don't care for them in a proper way. She's so sweet and loves to be around people, it's so sad that she has to gone through this all

Actually this would make a terrible travel cage for small birds, too! The bar spacing is waaay too wide to be safe. Birds small enough to comfortably travel in that cage are also small enough to wedge their heads between those bars and possibly hurt themselves.

The saddest thing is that they do have the capacity to do the research, to give these animals a good life, but they’re just so damn lazy and don’t care. That is the most heart breaking thing to me. My former friends kept my chinchilla, who I spoiled with the best toys, best food, best everything. I was away visiting family for a couple of weeks and when I went to pick him up they laughed and informed me he had starved to death because they kept forgetting to feed him. He was a stunning violet chinchilla named Pluto… these people have the messiest apartment with a blue healer who urinates and defecates on everything and two cats who do the same. It was my fault entirely that Pluto is gone, I thought I could trust these people and they were my last resort, but in hindsight I should’ve found a reputable sitter. I won’t be getting another chinchilla for a while… it’s been over a year and I’m still mourning the loss of my boy…

I don’t think lots of people realise how long guinea pigs can live, so they get them for their kids thinking they’ll only have them for a couple years like a hamster. My piggies lived for nearly 9 years, so they’re almost as much of a commitment as getting a cat / dog! They make amazing pets but people should definitely do their research before getting them. My Guineas had a huge run in the garden which they LOVED during the summer months, but as they got older we had to bring them inside in the winter as it gets too cold for them and you can’t just stick them in a tiny cage in the corner! Thank you for rescuing these boys, unfortunately I’m sure there are many others that sadly live their lives like they were 😔

If they are making a commitment like that and getting any animal they need to do as much research as possible. No excuse to not know better. I worked at a chain pet store and they don’t really educate us or require us to educate others on certain things. Not saying it’s right though. That just made me want to learn as much as possible for myself and so I can properly educate customers but so many times have I had people not listen to me and not do the research no matter how hard I try. Most times customers want the cheapest route which means crappy food and smaller cages and lack of necessities.

@@kmcol.8882 The problem is that pet stores DO educate, it's just their "education" often lines up with what they sell on their own shelves.
Why would you expect anyone to look up answers to a question they already got answered by an establishment that you presume to have knowledge on said animal (given that they are currently housing x amount of that animal on sale, and selling countless cages and toys and food types for them)
Pet stores should be legally required to either carry items for PROPER care of the animal and NOT sell improper items (cages too small, bad diets, dangerous toys), or not be allowed to sell the animal.

All my Guinea Pigs are rescued. Its means so much that someone cares! 2 of my Guinea Pigs were in a small pet store cage with wood bedding that hasnt been changed in 4 months! One of them unfortunately had a urinary infection and passed 3 months after having her. But she really enjoyed what life she did have with me. She was so happy and was definitely a snuggler! Then I rescued two more. One owner couldn’t financially take care of them so they haven’t eaten in days. And the other one came from a breeder and didnt take care of them. I was so upset that she was breeding them but apparently she stopped and was giving them away. She had one male and one female so I took the female since I have females and my friend took the male since he has males and now we are wanting to build a setup to rescue more! On another note, I love your videos and how educational they are! Cant wait to see more! Much love! ❤️

As a Munchie’s viewer I’m really not surprised. People get animals without doing any kind of research all the time, and it’s amazing that there are people like you and Munchie who can rescue them and educate people about a proper care.
On that note I think that you should educate the owners from whom you rescue the pigs in the future, because you never know if in a few years they will try to get another pig / small animal again, and it will be a repeat of this situation all again.
Other than that, you’re doing an amazing job, keep it up ❤️

Your vid is the 1st guinea pig recommendation i've had on TH-cam. I rescue dogs, foster, then find homes for dogs a ton and am more known for that, but what a lot of people don't know is that i also rescue and own fish and hamsters. Being a hamster owner, i watch a TON of ham vids. I am constantly trying to educate myself, and my smallest enclosure is 6' x 4' x 3' (L x W x H). I own 6 hamsters atm - including some rescues. I rescued 2 hams within the last year. The two i got were kept in a "cage" that wasn't even a foot long, wide, or tall. No wheel, improper bedding (and not enough), horrible diet, no chews, and they were kept IN THE SAME "CAGE." I was horrified. I don't have my license, so i had to arrange to be driven 1.5hrs out to get them (it was hard to convince someone to drive me that far for them), but I'm so glad I did. They each have their own enclosures now, they are thriving, and they literally lack for nothing. It breaks my heart seeing how neglected small animals are. Hamsters and small rodents really should not be advertised as pets for children, and the minimum space required needs to be cracked down upon. You do end up spending a lot of money on them - because they are like any other pet you would have (dogs, cats). With the access we have to information right at our fingertips, i really hope people actively start to educate themselves more and more before taking home one of these little ones, be them guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, mice, or hamsters. A happy animal brings such joy to your heart you don't even know you need. From the bottom of my heart - thank you for being such an amazing, caring pet owner

I'm so glad you are helping these two boys get healthy 💙. The new owner who gets them will have healthy piggies. I agree with you 💯 % that before bringing any pet into your home you must research their proper care and needs! I always research first. Often, it saved me and the animal of not being the right fit. And when it was the right fit my animal had a great life, and I truly enjoyed/loved them and now miss them.

I just got to the point where it's revealed the cage they were in was made for ferrets--I have ferrets, and would NOT recommend putting ferrets in that cage either, at least not permanently, due to the size and wire floors. Cage manufacturers need to be held to higher standards period :(

Thank you for rescuing these boys. My heart just sinks when you hear of these situations. A friend of mine works in an institution for mentally disabled persons. One of his clients has a solitary pig. The guinea pig is a comfort to that person so I'm glad but nobody there knew how to care for a guinea pig. I'm happy that my friend started asking questions when they saw my pigs and I've been able to give guidance on food, and even on getting the poor solitary pig a friend!

Thank you for talking about how rescuing animals can come with some big expenses both in money and time. We should all rescue when and where we can, but to expect the unexpected. I've rarely had a rescue pet who didn't need some kind of medical care. It's always rewarding, but it's not something to take lightly.
