I'm sorry you had to split up more boy piggies! Reading the comments is interesting, I think there are some valid points about arguments over food, but ultimately you were putting them back into a VERY large cage space, far bigger than the recommended, freshly cleaned out, they weren't apart for very long and they still fought! From having males previously, I never saw the kind of lunging behaviour and I would be very wary to write this off as "normal" - from what you described I think you were right to separate them, for their own safety. Going back, I lost a piggie due to an infected wound on the mouth from fighting, in my mind it's simply not worth the risk. I think the problem here could be that the males can sense the females in the same room - females come into heat every 3 weeks or so, and with a lot of girls the males are constantly being provoked to be the dominant one, causing more confrontations than is normally seen in pairs or groups of males. It is definitely not unusual for males to live very happily in pairs, and groups of males are not unheard of. Rescues have a big problem with too many males, happily bonded, that they cannot adopt out, because people think all males will fight. Males have big personalities yes - but this also makes them more confident, easier to tame, and great companions. 😃😍
Thank you for your kind words ❤️ Again, I wasn’t surprised it came to this as they have ALWAYS had a rough relationship, but it sucks given that I was so excited for them to get a cage upgrade! I do think the females scent rile the boys up, but also think personality of male pigs plays a HUGE role as well. I can definitely notice some being more bother than others. With all these single boys, I hope to see if I can bond any together; even just one pair would be nice 😅

I have 3 sets of bonded boars and I've seen it all. I don't think what happened between the two pigs was enough to separate them. Pulling fur isn't enough to prove bonds are broken. Boars can be total assholes to eachother, but unless you see blood - leave them together. They probably fought because of the change of scent in the cage. For example if you didn't wash each grid perfectly, even the walls nearby could smell like the other pigs. Boars are tricky but we need people to love and adopt them too. I have no lady pigs and I love them so much.
Good point. One time I forgot to wash my hands after handling one pair of boars before handling another pair within their cage. The scent of the other pigs was enough that they got mad at each other. They ended up tussling and one pig got a bite on his nose. I did not separate them and they did eventually work it out, but I'm extra careful about not introducing foreign piggie scents into a territorial boar's cage.
It could be the scent on the grids. It’s important to fully wash everything because right when they were put in the new cage you can tell they notice the different smell.
I got 6 pairs of bonded boars and yes it seems like the boys only need some time to work it out together. It can be stressful to watch but patience and observation are keys to bond them in my opinion. You can rebond them after letting them live side by side for a while. Two boars of mine actually can rebonded just like that
I definitely agree and came here to say the same. Guinea pigs need to re-establish dominance when they are moved to a new space. This is totally 100% normal and should be expected. I bet if you had just given them like 48 to 72 hours all would be back to normal again. Hopefully, you can re-bond them and they can have an in cage buddy again ☺️
Sorry but I don’t agree but I only have females cause boys drive me insane! I’ve tried bonding boys but it’s never worked. My bonding rule is if they don’t want to be together I won’t put them together because I feel like they will eventually get into a huge fight. (Which has happened before while I wasn’t home one of my males at the time attacked my female and had to be taken to the vet for stitches. I had a security camera in there thank god so I knew what happened. But yea that’s my opinion
I really appreciate you advocating for proper Guinea pig care! My friend has 2 males living in a 9 sq foot enclosure and she has sadly been using harnesses for them in the morning I have tried many times to tell her they are not safe and can hurt their backs and that a playpen is a better option but she is too scared to use one after they jumped out I will show her this video so hopefully she stops using them.
I'm totally with you on those harnesses and the colorful food. Thank goodness for the you tube vhannels that educate people about what good and what's not for the guinea pigs.

W0W!! Boy guinea pigs got mad drama. Jaja I have 2 boys, Quasi & Poncho, they are brothers and been with each other since birth. They have the cutest relationship together. At night they sleep side by side or yin-yang. They do have their issues from time to time but they know who the boss is among each other.
I love how you stress out over their important relationship drama...better to stress about that than other things.
Just a rabbit advocate, here to learn about pigs. I really appreciate how much time and effort you spend on your pigs having great lives. I wish more people took the time to educate themselves and get it right. Small pets deserve all the love and effort larger pets get! Rabbits and guinea pigs have similar bonding and de-bonding tendencies. Always best to just seperate them and not take the risk if drama erupts. I've had scents from OUTSIDE upset my rabbits bonds. It doesn't take much sometimes for them to fall out with each other. They could both get a wiff of something bad and blame each other for weeks.

Rescued two rabbits living in a tiny cage once, two brothers (one neutered, one not). They didn’t fight in that small cage, but the unneutered male was skin and bones which was due to the stress! As soon as I got them and they got more space they started fighting. I seperated them and now the stressed bun is so happy, put on weight STRAIGHT away, and now lives with a neutered female!

In the video you separated your two bonded boars, putting one into the carrier. Separating them to reduce conflict has the opposite effect we want. If you allow them to stay together at all times, they will have their initial confrontation over territory and rank and sort it out. This can take a few times on the floor together or wherever new, but it strengthens their relationship and bond. It's scary as a human to witness some of their behaviors, but as long as there is no blood don't intervene. Providing multiple areas for hay access, not just a single hay box is also important for some male pairs. Food is the biggest driving force for territory arguements in my house.
Guinea pigs are extremely dramatic, I really believe boars enjoy the thrill of the squabble. My boy Clove AGGRESSIVELY nose boops Llama sometimes. It's never with teeth, but an aggressive boop that an outsider might find frightening.

Second this!! They need the opportunity to work it out themselves. I have three boars and they all love each other but they still argue like brothers. One time two of them had a big fight that resulted in a split lip (it was kinda my fault, they didn’t have enough room and he got cornered at the foot of the ramp). I thought they were broken up for and put the instigator in a cage beside them. After a day of separation, the instigator was running back and forth and seemingly begging for forgiveness lol. The other two ignored him for a bit but then they ended up missing him too. I woke up one morning and the instigator had somehow broken back into his brothers cage!!! I extended their enclosure and there’s been no problems since

I would also not have separated them for those behaviors but that escape artist piggie needs a whole room to himself with his bold attitude! He'd probably be super happy if he could get neutered and be with a big herd of girl pigs.
That is true! I’ve learned from someone that you should put them together and then separate a few times before really letting them together for a bigger time without supervision. Long story short, one of my four kids now has problems interacting with the other ones. The other three are doing well so far cause I had the courage to let them bond without separating them, but it is really scary for me (they’re all male) 😂😅😅

I wouldn't advise people not to get males, what I would advise is not to have them in the same room as females.

People need to adopt male pigs and try to understand their behaviors and needs better. They have a few more complications but they are still wonderful and can be happily bonded if you do it right.

I’d like to clarify that I meant you shouldn’t gat males if you are a beginner/are fully commit to learning their behaviors and up to make changes if anything happens. I love my males to death and wouldn’t trade them in for the world, but if I knew how difficult they can be, I would have gotten only females.

My males are the same. I wish neutering wasn’t so expensive for Guinea pigs 😢
My vet charged me 50$ I don’t think it’s usually that high of a procedure. Maybe look around, I guess I’m just fortunate to have a very kind vet.
Yeah, mine is 500+ to neuter, and so are a lot of vets in more urban areas sadly.
I am extremely happy and feel very lucky that when I got my new pig (a new boy) I prepared for the worst and they actually bonded really quickly and they tolerate each other pretty good, well no more than some teeth chatters occasionally obv still some dominance stuff but nothing crazy and i'm so thankful to the piggy gods it worked out that way.

Sorry you had to split your boys thanks to you and a few others i have upgraded to a CnC cage gotten another as i only had one stoped useing mineral rolls and switched to just pellet food and switched and to fleece for bedding i have learned so much from peopledoing videos like this thank you

i have two males and they get along fine. sometimes, just sometimes if there is a change in scent or routine, they get mad at each other. usually its solved by more hay. i would try to give yours more hay, like add a second pile of it? if that doesnt work, I know you mentioned that winston likes ashton, maybe try and bond them?
I think Winston wants to be your little helper.
I’ve had to divide my 2 boars for the time being too, they moved into a 5x2 with 2 of everything but still had some very bad arguments and I was too worried about them to leave them in there while I wasn’t there to supervise. They seem happier as neighbours for now, and I’m hoping to increase their cage size again! You have to do what you think is best in those types of situations, you know your pigs the best
Just a suggetion : you can make Jojo (all really, but you talk extra for him) a larger cage if you build it out towards you / the aisle / door / lamp. At least that one grind width that you wish
That’s the same thing our Guinea pigs are doing. They are both brothers and now they are older( we got them as a pair at a pet store) they used to be close and now they both can’t even be in the same cage together. Ever since we bought a third pig the started acting different. We used to put them together when we clean the cage but now we can’t even do that. We now have all three pigs separated. I found ur video and I guess its not that uncommon that pigs fight.

You should try to bond ashen and your little escap arthritis.
If you piggy proofed the cables etc in the room, Winston could be a free range piggy
I think Winston may need some sort of anxiety treatment and perhaps more of his own space. He seems very restless and is constantly pacing or trying to get out. It might be worth talking to your vet about
wish i knew this sooner 😭 i have 4 boys and 1 girl ( my last girl recently passed away miss you josie) and they’re all crazy
i find that it really helps boars maintain their bond if you invest in some corner hammocks, & get rid of all smaller hideys. whenever my boars get into a dominance dispute, the less dominate pig can retreat onto a hammock where they cant be crowded by the other pig. since they cant reach them, the more dominant boys eventually back off & find something else to do. this eases the tension before things escalate & the bond breaks. my boys love using their hammocks whenever they need to avoid confrontation. another tip is to always do an extreme scrubbing if you want to switch to another cage where unfamiliar boars has already been living. you did well with cleaning the chloroplast, but i would have actually completely dismantled the cage to clean deeply under the chloroplast, wipe the grids, & even disinfect the walls. this would have eliminated all traces of the other 2. & as cute as he is, i also would not have allowed Winston to run around his new home prematurely. his scent was probably all over the cage before you even put the other boar in, making it his territory. with all of that said, i would like to clarify that i dont think you made any drastic errors - boar bonds just tend to be extremely vulnerable to even slight changes. but i also dont think the boys have reached the point of no return just yet. it could be worthwhile to try reuniting them after doing another deep clean, switching bedding out, & also providing an escape route- such as a hammock :)

I’ve had female pigs nearly all my time in the hobby. Got a Craigslist pig that was already pregnant so I ended up with a pair of boars (she had 1 male, 1 female). While it is a LOT easier to pair adults with babies, I definitely don’t think males are for beginners. They are hypersensitive to environmental changes. I have to handle my girls like a disease when handling my boys haha. Just consider absolute cleaning to try and avoid conflicts. I even separate my fleece for the boys only.
If you do consider getting more piggies, I would suggest getting babies for your bachelors. Much simpler bonding
Atm I'm currently having a problem with my male pigs. Just out of the blue they started fighting with teeth chattering and lots of chasing. No blood or anything but what else can I do other than separating them?

I would try an neuter winston, he seems really stressed. But also I see that hes also over average crazy.

I recently adopted 2 males piggies who were supposedly bonded and together their whole lives. I tried to bond them with my single male and it didn’t not go well. I’ve never bonded piggies before so im sure I didn’t do everything perfect but I feel for your pain. Im so sorry ur boys were fighting, it’s so disappointing and stressful!! The two adopted piggies seem to get on each other’s nerves but then the next minute they’re fine 🤦♀️🤷♀️ I have two of everything !!!

You can generally buy coroplast sheets from Home Depot or sign stores.
I had a pair of brothers and as soon as we got two girl piggies for my other neutered boar (different cage same room) they started fighting and we had to separate them after being done for three years
My piggie Pacha is a crazy one too. He’s really aggressive to others piggies that’s why he’s living alone
And he’s always escaping his cage which is 2X5 is really big for him. That’s why I decide to let him free roaming all the time in my bedroom since I did that he’s the happiest piggie. But still a little bit territorial even with me. Males piggies are crazy.
At least my boy is really happy he’s always popcorning even when I’m not in the room I have a security cam to watch him when I’m not in there 😅
Boys! Same thing happened with 2 pairs of my boys. I have 4 single boys as neighbors and 1 remaining pair of boys now unfortunately.
What about trying to bond Ashton & Winston together?

On the contrary, I'm having problems with my girls bonding and my boys were fine. Sage and butterscotch just won't get along and sage is the instigator - but when I got sage and her original sister it was her sister who broke the bond. So I got two new friends for sage and now she's like nope. Ahhhh. Stressful.

Both. They haven’t had a good bond for their whole life basically and it could have been the new smells that triggered them.
I think the point of the "harness" for the pigs is for them to be attached to something when say they are outside for playtime. But I do think the package should've elaborated on that.

hi! im looking to get guinea pigs (first time) should i get a male (neutered) and a female, a female pair or 2 females and a (neutered) male. frost watching your videos the girls seem alot calmer and boys more outgoing, and id like to enjoy the best of both worlds. or i could aquire a pair if girlies and when im used to owning them introduce a male to them. what would you reccomend? :)

You are right, males are so so tough to bond. I had to separate my two, and I have a third which I neutered and he lives happily as the husboar with his many sows haha. I wish I could rescue more males but I don’t have the space that they may need with failed bondings and all.
Have a question for you man do you breathe the Guinea pigs If you do I had a few Guinea pigs his pets but it seemed like The ones at the pet store is all females how much do the male Guinea pigs cost.
Moving a pair to a new location when their bond isn't stable will always reset their bonding to some extent and hence trigger dominance behavior. You really should avoid moving them (or changing their enclosure too much) at this point and wait until they have settled their disagreements. It can take weeks.
You also made the mistake to only put one pile of hay inside the cage. They would have to come really close to each other to be able to eat some hay. And of course no one would back down and fight for the only hay pile. Once you have two fighting males, you should adapt their cage to the situation. Place a second pile of hay in the other corner of the cage and a third in the middle.
I already commented that your boys are lacking socialization because they were never raised properly by a social adult male. And sadly you face the consequence now - either a bonding attempt fails or your pairs fall apart. :(
It really isn't that hard to have male guinea pigs living in pairs or groups if you don't mess up their upbringing...
Edit: Is there a reason why you removed Ezra from the trio and not Kai who was the aggressor? From my experience it's the best to always remove the troublemaker from the group and not the pig that got bitten (of course unless he was being bullied by everyone). Removing a pig from a trio will (again) trigger dominance behavior and reset their bonding. By leaving the troublemaker with the remaining male, you have a higher risk that the little troublemaker will now turn against his buddy.
Very valid points! I definitely hear you out 😇 And I ended up separating Ezra from the trio because he had an awful gash on his lip and I wanted him to heal without risk of Winston hurting him (not that he ever really did, I was just very cautious). I may even think about rebonding Winston and Ezra as they have been pretty good their whole lives when they were with each other.

True, I have 4 boars in 2 pairs. When I first got them I did not know as much as I should have about boars, and I put 3 together, but then 2 bullied the 3rd one, then 2 got in a bad fight. I tried a few rotations until I ended up settling in the 2 pairs that I currently have. I think in the future I would still like to have pigs but I will probably try to have a herd of ladies.
How often do you let them roam around on the floor?

I am dealing with the same situation! :( I got 2 "male" guinea pigs and in the end, one of them was not male. So, they had two guinea pigs, and unfortunately, one of them die. The baby is a male so I separate them from the parents Jaja Now the father and the baby are castrated, but they are not getting along. I have tried one time to unite them, but it was not a good experience and now I am worried that they will never get along.
I hope yours get another chance to get along to have a great environment!!

Chicks should not be in a tote and with a heat lamp like that it's way to hot and not enough air circulation that's how chicks die being over heated. We have a farm and I see this all the time not good. Get a good brooder with a heating plate makes a big difference and won't cause stress on the babies.

Am I the only one with a female who was a Nightmare to bond? My Philomena had about 3 failed bondings until I found a young, small and shy enough pig to put up with her! Even then, I'm pretty sure it's just because Phil is super old now and can't be bothered attacking her roommate unless her food gets stolen or she's particularly cross for some reason.
Nope I have a female that around 6 months of age caused problems for a cage mate. Then I couldn't rebond them after separating. My pig Storm lunges nonstop if I try bonding. N no ammount of food will stop her. She's scared I think of other pigs.

I have 2 male guinea pigs they are 2 brothers, But they can't reach my 2 ladies, so I have 2 brothers together and 2 girls together. I wanted them all together but that doesn't work. 1 girl succeeds because it is the mom of the 2 boys, but the other girl does not work with them. I expected it but I am so sorry for them because now the cage is a lot smaller and otherwise they would have a lot of space together. Big love to you and the guinea pigs 😍

Omggg I hate that for you! Males are so complex. I have found if I separate my male pair for even a few minutes (for lap time or nail clips), the second they are back together they act like they’ve never met 🤷🏻♀️ I hope you will be able to bond a few of them back together, but of course that is up to them. 🙂

The boys are adorables, more than girls. I have 12 boys, they live by two, and 18 girls. I prefer the boys, they are more social, softer and more cuddly. You have to find the right pair. A dominant and à submissives or 2 submissives together. Once they are adulte, with the good duo there is no problem.
You should assign mats and bed for each group or guinea pig and no exchange them with others even after washing. They can smell girls or other boys.

A male and female will likely stay bonded. It's usually only boars that do this.
