You don’t expect such a low voice to come out of a little girl’s mouth.
You asked who wrote it - it’s an old Gospel song, written over a century ago. It was written by a Swedish pastor in the late 1800s, first as a poem, and then he added music to it, a few years later, with help from a musician friend.
The lord has truly blessed this child.
This song is older than the hills. It was originally written by Swedish poet Carl Boberg in 1885 then translated into German in 1907 and Russian in 1912. The first English translation was by E. Gustav Johnson in 1925 but the version we have today was translated from the Russian version by Stuart K. Hine in 1949. A good number of artist have covered this classic over the years including Tennessee Ernie Ford, Burl Ives, Charlie Daniels, Billy Preston, Elvis Presley, and even an acapella group that you recently reacted to, Pentatonix that features Jennifer Hudson. Although Jennifer Hudson doesn't dare attempt the depths that Angelina does in her version. What is truly amazing is the amount of vocal control Angelina has at these lower ranges.

You've covered the history well, however the popularity of this hymn was due to it's being a staple of the Billy Graham Crusade tours worldwide, bringing it to the ears of hundreds of millions.

Edit: My memory is mixed up. I attended a Billy Graham Crusade event in Minneapolis, MN in 1950, but could not have heard this hymn then. I just did a little research and learned that George Beverly Shea first introduced it to the US at a Crusade at Madison Square Garden in 1957, so my memory of it has to be from the Crusades on TV later.

You're describing the "old soul" phenomenon that has been remarked upon since she was a tiny tot missing her baby teeth. It's more than just the voice, its an uncanny empathy and emotional wisdom emanating from an impossibly young body. She can seemingly sing anything, find its emotional core, amplify it, and send it back out into the world as if she was a proverbial "old soul" who'd been through all of life's trials and tribulations, and then a second later giggle like a little girl and cheerfully wave good bye. It's like channeling.

@Cc Decc, I agree. I thought that I had heard all her songs but this had escaped me. It is her creativity that shows up. It is interesting that she chose to sing this song and using her lowest register. I don’t think that it is to show off. Rather, I think she was trying to deliver a message with this song. It is a serious song and she is trying to give gravity to the melody and words. It would have been really interesting to hear this sung in church, with the amplification that comes from a church sound chamber with vaulted ceilings. Some music are meant to be sung in certain settings.

Yes, it was featured by Elvis Presley in his 1967 gospel album "Where No One Stands Alone". I believe that Angelina's rendition is a cover of Elvis' performance on this album. Yeah, this one really surprised me when I first viewed it. A young girl singing at that register, I would have never saw this one coming. When you listen to Angelina for a while you start to realize she has so many tools she can use in any particular song and its mind boggling.

"How great thou art" was gone from her side a short time after she published it. May be because there were many who didn't like it or even understand it. I had to listen several times to it over some time to finally really like it. And she pushed her limits. Very brave move to put these songs out for us to hear and judge.

Angelina is so good at making you completely forget how old she is. I like the way you put it, her voice is "lived in". I don't know how she does it, but when she sings you can hear decades of life experience behind it. But at just 11/12 here there is just the one decade to draw from. It just doesn't make any sense. But there it is anyway. BTW: you said this one might be your favorite now. There's a common thought among Angelina fans... your favorite is probably going to be whichever one you are currently listening to ;)

Damn, she is is absolutely brilliant. She has the ability to draw you in as she starts to sing. She has an incredible ability to sing a blues style and surprise you oh, because you think she has just lived this life that has enveloped her and you realize that this brilliant artist is only 13 years old. We are seeing an incredible range with the Bohemian Rhapsody as well as her rendition of How Great Thou Art. I would also love to hear something that might introduce us to the full range of her voice.

When she was 11 years old, she told that she doesn't always feel like a eleven year old. Sometimes she feels like a 65 year old, she told the Norwegian newspaper VG back in Nov. 30. 2017. How many 11 yo kids say that?
My son who is currently 18 was like that and still is. He came out of the womb a little old man. He hated school and graduated early, currently in the army as a flight medic. Grown ups constantly commented on his eerily old soul.

I grew up listening to this song. I think the current term for what she is doing is called "breaking the internet." She has me scouring every corner of it, looking for her versions of every impeccable note. You are "dead on" about her voice. It sounds like someone who has lived and seen her share of good and bad.

She sings with the soul of a person who has lived a long life and suffered greatly along the way; this cannot be taught, as you may know...this is a gift.....her name suits her purpose: "Angelina = ANGEL" We as her consuming public MUST take great care of this angelic talent and NOT the music industry or ANYONE change who she is as a soul!
