  • How do you upgrade your laptop RAM memory? What RAM do you need to upgrade your laptop? How do you install RAM in a laptop?
    This video shows how to find the type of RAM you will need to upgrade your laptop and then how to install it. Three different methods are shown to find which RAM is already installed. The video uses an HP Omen 15-dc1054nr laptop from 2019 as an example for the research and installation of the RAM. Laptops vary a lot. The aim of this video is to give a concrete example of a laptop RAM upgrade so that the viewer can be more confident in doing their own research and upgrading their own RAM.
    I forgot to mention one other way to determine what type of RAM to use for you computer is to do a search with the tool at crucial.com. Also on crucial.com, you can have the site scan your computer to find out what RAM you need. Micron manufactures and sells RAM, and Crucial is a brand owned by Micron.

      my one slot is empty for the ram and one is installed with 8gb so do i need to buy the same part as installed from the factory version or i have to replace even that and eventually buy totally new pair of stick with higher capacity.
      And its just swap, and use kind of scene or else there is something else to do with BIOS or software tweaks??

      turning on xmp profile in the bios makes the ram the advetised speed. Even desktops without xmp turned on the ram will run at base frequency and not advertised frequency. Gotta turn that XMP profile on and poof! full ram speeds

    • @hometechadventure4462
      @hometechadventure4462  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you laptop is capable of supporting this RAM, it will turn the memory clock higher if XMP is enabled, allowing it to run a bit faster on some tasks. I wouldn't hold my breath though on it running faster. Often, it will just downclock the RAM to run at the speed of the memory bus, like 2400MHz, but it should still work. Laptops can be finicky about RAM though, so you won't know until you try it.

    Hello, I was hoping you would cover more on what to do if the laptop does not start back up. I bought an 8 GB of ram, but when installed it, my omen would not start. When I put the original ram back in, it was fine. What do you mean by "reseed"?

    • @hometechadventure4462
      @hometechadventure4462  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Re-seat, the RAM. This means take it out and put it back in again. Sometimes it gets in just a little off and doesn't make the needed connections. Taking it out and putting it back in sometimes will solve the issue. There is always a possibility that you got a bad RAM stick. Also, laptops can be very picky about which RAM sticks will work. Check that you bought the correct RAM for your laptop, and if you did and it still didn't work, you could try a different brand.

  • @talichni002

    So my questions is if I actually put new RAM in it... For example I have 2x8GB of RAM and I swap it for 2x16GB RAM. Do I need to install some drivers? Will the CPU automatically recognize new RAM? Any combinations of RAM you should not do? such as 1x8GB + 1x16GB or 1x32 + empty slot?

    • @hometechadventure4462
      @hometechadventure4462  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No drivers required for RAM, it will be recognized if it is compatible with your computer. Any combination should work in any slot. For best performance though, you want both slots filled with identical RAM sticks. When both slots are filled with the same RAM sticks, the computer will run in dual channel mode which is a bit faster.

    I thought my laptop will be super fast cause it has 2070 nvidia inside, but it cant run some games proprly.....slow fps.....so will there be a lot of difference if I upgrade from 2x8 to 2x 16 gb ram? What will change? MOre fps?

    • @hometechadventure4462
      @hometechadventure4462  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A laptop 2070 should be capable of good gaming performance. Check the Windows 10 power and performance settings, and set for maximum performance. Also, plug in your laptop for fastest gaming. It may reduce performance a bit when running off battery.
      As to the RAM, for now, I'm going to refer you to a video by JayzTwoCents for the answer:

    Hi, wich ram do I need to buy? Does the frequency has to be same as current? Like 3600 mhz? Or can it be lower?

    • @hometechadventure4462
      @hometechadventure4462  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lower speed ram will probably still work, but with slightly reduced performance. You have 3600 mhz RAM in your laptop? Do not mix two different ram sticks in a laptop.

      Yes. I did not do it this time because I wanted to keep it simple and follow what Hewlett Packard recommended on their website for this. Removing the battery would be best. I removed the battery in this video: th-cam.com/video/4c5-9JnfUvo/w-d-xo.html

    i added memory to my omen and it kinda just bricked the system. Just sits there blinking with 3 LED lights , basically the bios is in a unending loop. Only way to get to windows is to take out a stick and just run it with 4gb, the 2nd memory slot seems to have died

    • @hometechadventure4462
      @hometechadventure4462  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait, did you install 2 different memory sticks in your computer. Very often this doesn't work. Even if it is the same brand an model, if you bought it separately it will sometimes not work. You really should buy a complete 2x4GB sold as a set for 8GB total. Did you try both memory sticks in the single slot that seems to be working? It may be that you got a bad RAM stick. It does happen. Also, sometimes re-seating the RAM (taking it out and then putting it right back in) can make it work. Finally, laptops can be very picky about RAM. It may be that the Omen is just not liking the new RAM stick.

    • @hometechadventure4462
      @hometechadventure4462  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are only two RAM slots. They are likely filled with two 4 GB SO-DIMM's (memory sticks). To move to 16 GB, in this case, you would need to remove them and then add two 8 GB SO-DIMM's, or one 16 GB SO-DIMM. It is best to add two identical SO-DIMM's so that the PC works in dual channel mode for a bit better performance, especially in some games. If you choose to try 16 GB SO-DIMM's, make sure that the exact model you are upgrading will accept them by finding the specs on the HP website.
