    In my humble opinion, and as a classical violinist who studied with Broadus Erle at Yale, Itzhak Perlman is the greatest violinist of the modern age (I can't speak about the pre-Heifetz era). This is testimony to his total art. The emotion, the technical perfection, the total sound! Unbelievable!! The Chaconne, probably the greatest piece written by any composer for the violin, either solo or accompanied, in history. Bach and Itzhak Perlman: two eternal geniuses! Bravo!!

      Heifetz was not in the pre-Heifetz era, & neither was Kogan, so I'd say you're wrong.

    • @kimbatteau1
      @kimbatteau1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@deenibeeniable Heifetz was great, but Perlman is better, in my humble opinion. Heifetz was too machinelike, cold; accurate, but cold. Perlman is warm, and his technique is equal to Heifetz's. Sorry.

      @deenibeeniable 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kimbatteau1 Oh no. Another person who should have had his eyes closed while Heifetz was playing in order to hear the fire. You were duped by his facade.

    • @kimbatteau1
      @kimbatteau1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@deenibeeniable Perhaps. But I have listened (with and without video) many times to Heifetz. A great virtuoso! But his facade reflected his distant personality... You hear that if you listen close. My opinion.

    He is one of my favorites....I think we owe Bach a great deal on this piece. Bach wrote this only 5 days after his wife died, that is where the all the feelings come from in this music.

      Well, why carried away? For example, imagine for a moment that for whatever reason we were to lose the Parthenon, or Michelangelo's David, Da Vinci's Giaconda, or War and Piece, or any other masterpiece created by mankind. Any of these, I think, pale into insignificance if we were to even begin to contemplate a world without the Chaconne. To put it another way: if the chaconne is not one of the towering achievements of all human civilization, what is?

    I really like the way Perlman is deep in his own thoughts at the conclusion of his performance, and that only several moments after the audience responds to what he's offered them does he stand and face the audience. Then his face is genuinely grateful for their respect/love of his beautiful playing.

    The total musician, plays with tremendous technique, but what an amazing feel he has in this concert. He was on fire. the slow build-up to the climax of the chaconne from around 27:12 is sublime, it gets noisier, scratchier and more disonnant as if Hendrix is playing it, and at 28:08 resolves to stunningly virtuosic runs of scales....We are so lucky that this performance was recorded and to have TH-cam! (the Applause is fab too!)

    A legendary performance by Perlman. This is one of the best interpretations of Bach's 2nd Partita and is a great reference for aspiring performers. The "Chaconne" as they say is like climbing Everest, but the first movement "Allemande" is not out of reach for intermediate-level violinists.
    Unfortunately this particular video has poor quality audio, possibly due to the recording technology of the time and degraded tape. Search allegrofilms Partita in D Minor on youtube for cleaned-up sound.

    I love that Maestro Perlman always seems to love the music as much as we do, rarely even opens his eyes, doesn't take forever tuning up, just sits down and gets on with it. I've watch & listened to him for so long, others seem to move around too much, almost swaying to their own music or dance (Vengerov makes me a little batty for this reason). I'm sure it's just what I'm used to....but. omg, this is magnificent! Wish I knew the year....he looks so young here!

    This is a virtuoso interpretation, and certainly a matter of taste. My personal benchmark for this work is the DG recording of Henryk Szeryng (who also does not play in a strict baroque style). What is mindblowing to me, an intermediate violin student, is that JS Bach, celebrated organist and keyboard player, also *played* these compositions that he composed for violin. Superhuman.

    I love how Perlman concludes the Gigue--that long, final stroke announcing the arrival of the Chaconne. Perfect timing.

    Such feeling, style, emotion, and grace. He gives each note representation. He is truly one of the greatest virtuosos ever to play violin. I love to watch the way his body feels each note and with such intonation. He is a mastermind. He sounds like my private teacher who I took lessons from. They are both that good.

    Only Perlman can play a so intense Bach 's Chaconne between 19:01 and 20:38.
