As a violin player, I can tell you that the introduction part may sounds “easy” but actually not at all. It requires difficult bowing control techniques and he just did a superb job.
No doubt it was deliberate. Poor Saint-Saens never gets the respect he deserves, one of the greatest performers, universal prodigies and musical humourists in history. I blame Wagner.
I am a 38 yr old black female who lives in the ghetto city of East Cleveland Ohio and I love the violin. I don't know how to play, have never played, however; I FELL IN LOVE with the way this man plays my favorite instrument even though I don't know how to play and have never played. When I heard the musical score for Schindler's List I had to find out who was playing that violin. The way Mr. Perlman plays is wonderfully maddening. I have his CD Itzhak Perlman's Greatest Hits and this song is track number 6 ( I love ALL the tracks, especially 4, 5, and 6). It's about time a video was shown showing him playing this song. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT! Anybody can rap, not everyone has a TALENT. He has beautifully mastered how to play-not the violin strings-but my heart strings, THAT IS SKILL. The CD I have belongs to the Windermere Public LIbrary and I refuse to bring it back because I love it so. I just keep paying the late fees, o well, so be it. I love it, I wish I could meet him.
You could actually save the the money you will pay as late fees and buy a CD of your own. I think this album it's not expensive at all, if you are willing to buy it.
the Cleveland Institute of Music is not far from you! We put on several world class concerts a year for free (unlike the expensive tickets needed to see the Cleveland orchestra at Severance Hall). We would love to have you some day.
You know you have nailed it when you can make a technically challenging piece like this sound fluid, crisp, and easy. The best rendition of this masterpiece that I’ve ever heard.
This rendition is arguably the best I have ever heard - and I have heard it played by all the violin giants of the Golden Age. Mr. Perlman exceeds himself here, capturing the Gallic spirit beautifully. It's all here folks! No need to look further. After this rendition, few violinist today should dare to record it. Mr. Perlman owns this piece!
What makes this man absolutely unique is that his playing takes one to a place of fantasy within... It is a personal, metaphysical phenomenon that informs and directs his actions, and is not teachable... Lest anyone forget, he can create magic - playing the simplest tune. He is a great personality of music!
@WestkelMusic it doesn't matter about the hours, and amount of hours it takes you or even for him. Its because he has a talent that was given to him, and you have to feel the music to play it with your feelings, and naturally.
sarah lee*0* Do you really believe what you just said? You think you can be an amazing violinist like Perlman without practicing and just by being talented? His talent was achieved by his fierce history of violin playing and performing. How dare you say that his talent wasn’t achieved by the overwhelming time he put into practicing the violin
@@dash595 tbh saying all of that he has acheived was because of talent sounds like a terrible insult. To be able to play like him, you need a combination of talent and practise. How far can one even go without practise? Yeah, not much. If you think that being talented is enough to be like Itzhak, then you're dead wrong.
Thanks for posting this. I played for 10 years, and this is my favorite piece. It’s simply beyond perfect and mind boggling that someone could play it so beautifully.
Mr Perlman is a genious of the violin and in music in general. Congratulations! I would so much meet him, watching him play and listen to him personally.
At this time, Itzhak Perlman looked so much like Schubert! Love them both deeply. And this masterpiece of Saint-Saëns too. Thanks for this moment, Abner Silva.
I've been a fan of this piece for a couple of years now, I've heard quite a few renditions, my favorite being Heifetz and Kogan, until just-now... This was a masterpiece play-through. Bravo.
Listening to Perlman play *anything* reminds me how much like the human voice the violin is, and probably more so than any other musical instrument. Just watching him with the chinrest up against his chin, how he must literally feel the sound, just as a singer does when performing. I can't imagine anything more...well...more sensational.

Short of Paganini, I think there is an upper limit of superiority that masters such as Perlman and Heifetz reach. Perhaps it is possible to get a majority consensus amongst an elite panel in determining who had the best technique. The violin wasn't my instrument, so I have no opinion there. I will say that of the interpretations of this song performed by Perlman and Heifetz, I prefer the former. Saint-Saëns' piece sings here. Perlman's interpretation allows for notes to seemingly hang in the air just a touch longer than what I heard from Heifetz, and that's how I like to hear Saint-Saëns' work interpreted.
+Laura Andujo I love LISTENING to Perlman, but I just can't stand seeing those ridiculously histrionic faces he makes when he plays. I'd have to make him play behind a curtain. Poor darling, he thinks he's a clown in a silent movie. God!!
