- Sandhill Cranes make a variety of calls, from purrs to hisses to bugles, with variations that require the context of what the cranes are doing to understand. For example, purrs are used in calling young, prior to flight or mating, or when the crane is nervous. Unison calls or guard calls are sometimes used to let other cranes know this is the pair's territory or prior to or during flight flight, as well as in other circumstances. Vocalizations are complex and not fully understood. Enjoy these purrs and unison calls.
Fun fact , amongst other birds , the Sandhill crane was one of the many birds used when producing vocalizations for Rodan in Godzilla King of the monsters .

Well THAT'S what these guys are. Saw a pair throwing sticks at each other while out on a hike and didn't know what they were but they sounded like dinosaurs. So cool.
Growing up in Florida, you tend to have a love/hate relationship with these beautiful creatures.
They do like to stand in front of your car and refuse to move 😅

What??? You’re kidding! Every time I’ve ever encountered these here in MN they fly away before you can even get 100 feet from them! They’re super skiddish and will NOT let you get close. Wonder why that is
@@paulspomer16 lol. Maybe something to do with the time of year we encounter them. I see them in the lower elevation meadows of the western Uintas (where I spend most of my time) in the summer. Maybe they’re extra bold because they have young they’re defending in the area?
I remember when I heard its call for the first time, I was camping in a mountain range in Wyoming. I wake up on "strange sounds" which I had never heard anything like them before. They were loud and their echos bounced from every direction. I was so puzzled about where they were coming from and gave me chills. For some reason I felt like I was in Jurassic Park or something.

When I was a kid I thought these noises were pterodactyls and they were going to eat me
I just bought a place in the UP and was out night hiking with my pups. Yeah, I'm full grown and still pretty sure they are going to eat me. Haha
It could just be me but, these sounds remind me of the dilophosaurus in Jurassic Park

Just saw a huge flock of these things. Never seen them before and thought they were geese because they were so high.
Couldn’t figure out what they were doing because their flight pattern was so weird.
And then they were making this noise.

I love how you can always hear them before you see them. So when I hear them I keep my eye on the sky and sure enough they appear like magic. It's beautiful!
Well, for goodness sakes! When we first moved to Homer in 2000, we rented a condo from Dr. and Mrs. Sayers on Lake Beluga. I kept being awakened by these "crazy bird sounds." I thought they were loons! I was not familiar with either bird. Now, 17 years later, I learn that it was sandhill cranes driving me bonkers, waking me every morning and then, I'd hear them again every evening .. always when the float planes were taking off, and then as they returned much later. :-) Learn something new every day ... and decade! Thank you for sharing!

I am so excited ! A pair of these birds just flew through my back yard! I had to come in and look them up having heard their call as they were flying over.. I am so happy that they are here. I have lived here for over 43 years and this was the first time they have decided to come here
Great video of a magnificent bird.
Note the echos from around 0:30 to 1:00 - these birds are LOUD. Several families of them live in my in-laws' neighborhood in Florida. They come strolling through the yards, poking at the ground like in this video.
They look and sound like dinosaurs. I'm seeing more and more here in Illinois. My dog was shocked 😂
Eight years later and this video is still being watched! Such a gorgeous bird. And the baby is sooo cute. The fall/winner scenery is gorgeous. Saw a pair of Sand cranes about 3 weeks ago in North Florida. They are stunning creatures. Thank you for posting this video.

Wow quite a fascinating sound. Another bird that makes different vocal sounds is native to Southern Africa. It’s called a hadada ibis also known as Hadeda. They sound like humans making sounds 😂 and singing/being goofballs

I have two of these beautiful birds and I woke up to this noise today. I thought something was being harmed..
It's very loud and alarming, but I love them.
They have very long tracheas which allows their calls to be heard long distances.

I live in Illinois. Every once in a while, I would hear these guys flying in the sky. Couldn’t tell if they were storks, herons, or cranes. Glad I know now!

Im so confused because i assume what we think dinosaurs sound like is reverse engineered from birds like this ? everyones saying they sound like dinosaurs (me included) but humans like the sound engineers on jurassic pk derived what dinosaurs maybe sounded like from them ? i find it so funny-we hear the real thing and think of the cgi one, theyre like the voice actor behind the scenes in our dino movies 😂

We have some in our neighborhood. They wake us up sometimes. Good old sandhill cranes
It's April and one flew over my apartment and freaked me out. Lol I had to come here in Minnesota and check to see if it was a crane or not lol they are loud. Thought it was something else at first. I've always seen them out on the lakes in the summer mostly and in Ireland a lot too. Glad to see them here now after all that snow we've had for 7 or 8 months now.

That's how fast they are? They just walk through my yard making noise at 5am. Aren't even afraid of cars.
Their call reminds me of the original raptors from Jurassic Park. though I imagine a higher pitched version would be great for a swarm of compies (Compsognathus)

Its 2Am I smoked before letting the dog out. I just moved to the country. My lands got a creek and marsh shit I call my swamp. Well, I never heard that noise till now. I was taking a leak with the dog after a good days work. I heard a wild ass scream, so I shined my flashlight twords my brush pile. I assumed what I saw was the windigo running and screaming while changing shape. So I put it away, ran to my dog, picked er up, and went right inside. Now Im balls deep researching birds, animals, and shit. I think what I really saw was a deer at the same time as hearing one of these birds freaking out, and because of that, I got piss on my legg and ruined my dogs' potty time. thanks for reading. I was honestly very scared till after a shower and snack.

😮when I first heard these beautiful and extremely loud creatures which is an understatement! 👀👻🦖🧠, it was in 2022 and my whole family and I were so horrified hearing them in the pitch black night in the direction of the very close lake in our newly moved into neighborhood, and we all didn’t know if we were all about to be attacked and eaten up by raptor dinosaurs 🦖 bcs the cranes all sounded like the sound effects in the Jurassic Park movies when all the raptors would roar out and then kill the humans savagely! We couldn’t sleep all night, and then the next day we asked some neighbors and they told us it was just the Sandhill cranes!🍿 😮😢😅😂🎥

The word "vocalizations" has been pushed on all of us to undermine the idea that the other creatures are conscious (and so it's alright to kill them for any reason or no reason if we humans happen to feel like doing that). To say they are speaking would be more respectful and probably more accurate. No?
I don't know, we use the term "vocalization" for human speech as well. I think cranes have language. They are able to communicate with their colts with different calls. We do not have a full understanding of animal languages as yet, but I think we are finally coming to realize that they do have their own "languages" that we are just beginning to realize. I hope to see more research to help us understand animals and their lives and that we will instill more respect for each species in their own right.

I think the particular use when referring to the speech of non humans is intended to promote a feeling of separateness and superiority on the part of the humans (who else?) who are doing the reading. A psychological manipulation. Not that you or the author of this video have that intention personally but I think there are some people who would not want sympathy for the others to increase generally.
