R J Corman Flat Switching in Dover, Ohio - An Awesome Catch!

  • This is on the RJ Corman Cleveland Line. It was started in December 1988 and
has 68.65 miles of track. It serves: Wooster, Massillon, Dover, New Philadelphia, Midvale
serving 16 customers in total. The Cleveland Line interchanges with: CSX - Warwick, Norfolk Southern - Massillon, Wooster, Wheeling & Lake Erie - Brewster
I was close in calling this an EMD SW 1500, but no cigar. The EMD MP 15 superseded the
SW 1500 in February 1974. It was lengthened by 3 feet from the SW 1500. The
MP 15AC was the first EMD switcher to receive the Dash 2 technology. In
1972 their road locomotives first introduced Dash 2, then in 1975 it came to
their MP 15AC. It also had a 1500 HP 12-645E prime mover which was the same as
    in the SW 1500.
Another new advent in the MP 15 AC locos was the D32 main generator was replaced
with an AR10/D14 alternator/rectifier. Note also the "tunnel motor" look with the
radiator section near the front bottom of the loco. Southern Pacific was the first RR
to order a new MP 15AC. (Southern Pacific was the RR that first inspired the
tunnel motor concept in road locos SD40T-2 and 45T-2.)
    via RR Pictures Archives:
RJ Corman 1410 is an EMD MP15AC Built As: MILW 459 (MP15AC)
Serial Number: 75629-26 Order No: 75629
    Frame Number: 75629-26 Built: 1/1976
Notes: MILW 459 to SOO 1525 to UP 1410 to UPY 1410 to RJCC 1410

RJ Corman has ran in dover for years now. Before RJ Corman im not sure what ran on this line. The line is called the Cleveland Lines but before that it was a part of B&O before getting bought out by Chesapeake & Ohio eventually becoming the Chessie System, which is now known as CSX. When RJ Corman got there hands on this. Im not sure. I live around that area and you asked for a little info about it. They have three main engines, 1804, 4119, and 3001. 3001 is an Ex-Lehigh Railway train and the other two have always been RJC. We have the switcher, obviously, and we used to have a genset, not really sure what happened to that one.

Ive learned that after B&O, Chessie System ran on the line before being bought by RJ Corman. I also discovered that the Pennsylvania Railroad ran through Dover as well. Penn Central saw no need to keep it in Dover and tore up track. B&O had passenger trains in Dover as well but the government stopped ghat because of Amtrak

As a railroader, I can never pass a yard without stopping to see what’s happening. I live about a mile from the CSX Main Line sub. Former L&N main. Always interesting traffic. A lot of auto rack unit trains, some mixed freight, a daily local, and about once a week an RJ Corman unit train with aluminum billet slabs.
Occasionally we see Norfolk Southern power on that line and have seen Burlington Northern and Union Pacific power very occasionally.

@@ccrx6700 You're welcome. I remember reading about that in a "Locomotive" magazine issue from the perspective of a conductor who was working for Canadian Pacific.
Interestingly, the Milwaukee MP15AC's that I was referring to were known on the CP as "Bandits", former Milwaukee MP15AC's that had not been rebuilt/repainted into CP colors. In the article, the conductor mentioned also of a local transfer job that involved taking a coal train down to a power plant to be unloaded, normally done via doubling due to a small hill en route. In his MP15AC "Bandit" story, the engineer he was with said they were taking the whole 14,000 ton train in one lick. The wildest part: although the train got down to 2mph on the hill climb, the Bandit engine dragged the entire train up and over the hill all by its lonesome. So, you can bet top dollar them MP15AC's are unique.

A little tip on your hashtags Dave - TH-cam will publish three of them per video. They must not have spaces as a space means stop - connect the words using Camel Case. If you did #RJCorman #FlatSwitching and #CormanCleavelend TH-cam would have published all three, but because #rj is repeated several times, they only publish it once and ignore the rest. #flat is the only other valid hashtag because there is a space after it. You can put in as many hashtags as you want, but again they will only publish three. You can look at the one's on my videos for reference. Have a great day 😊

You can move a lot of cars on the flat with 1500HP. A lot of the reason you need a lot of power on freight trains is to maintain speed up hills -- you need the power to lift all that weight vertically. I may be wrong, but I thought R.J. Corman was a railroad services provider, not an actual railroad company; they provide switching operations and MOW services to the major railroads. There is an R.J. Corman locomotive here in Lafayette, parked on Norfolk Southern property; occasionally I'll see it doing switching in the Norfolk yard.

they started buying up short lines. Here's a link to a great video that

I'm Terry from Cambridge Ohio about 1 hour south of Dover. You was at the classification yard for RJ Corman. The tank cars are for Dover Chemical on the north side of the crossing. Their derailment teams are also stationed at the yard.
