  • At one time, most of us owned something that stocked our shelves. That something was a big deal for years, but one day, its era ended and off it went to garage sales and thrift stores. We’re talking about VHS tapes, and they’re making something of a comeback in some unusual ways.

I work at a thrift store, and a lot of people have been buying a lot of VHS tapes lately.
One man told me yesterday that he buys/purchases VHS tapes because of the fond memories.
Also, I wish that my apartment was big enough so that I could start re-collecting VHS tapes again. Just before Christmas of 2021, I started to collect VHS tapes and I had to give them all away two months later because of the small spaces of my apartment.

I throw out thousands of these at a time at my thrift store and watch the compactor eat them. They always make a nice crunchy sound like crushing a large box of cereal with black spaghetti guts.

I just buy my favorite movies on vhs to convert them to digital so i can watch them on my google chromecast then i just donate the vhs tapes back to the thift shops. I love the look of old vhs movies i want to digitalize and own as much vhs movies as can but not having to deal with physically hanging onto the tapes themselves or own a vhs player

I stop at the local goodwill once a week. Vhs tapes are 2$ and i find all kinds of amazing classics and hard to find movies and shows. Its become my favorite hobby, next to comic book collecting. Its so fun and ive discovered so many amazing movies id never watch. Theres NOTHING better than booting up my 23 inch Sony CRT Tv, hearing the crunchy static, starting the vhs plaer and then getting in some warm pajamas and blankets and cozying up like its 1998. Its so fun. Its an amazing date too, try it some time. Me and my lady friend once a week pretend the goodwill is block buster, we pretend like we are renting a movie, we get popcorn and candy then go home and watch our movies, seriously try it out for date night. We are nerdy losers i know but its worth it, and shes HOT as hell too, sexy ass big booty Latina

Not just that, but their licensing are timed. If it reached its limit or if there isn’t enough viewers of watching it, they’ll pull it out of streaming services. To this day, I started collecting DVD’s to watch on my PS5 cuz f*ck licensing and streaming. Also, right now, I own a DVD & VHS player to stream and share with friends on Discord, but also, glad I can finally watch my old VHS movies like Shrek and the Indiana Jones trilogy.

@@sonicexereaper6814 I did the same and started before the Covid started, only it's DVDs and Blurays instead of VHS...
Some of them might be rare to find, and nobody plays them for quite a while on streaming service...
And they can also pull out some movies for Political Correctness, many movies we used to have were really fun and people loved them, but now, they're seen as unnacceptable to show them for a reason or another while back a while ago, such restrictions when they were originally released and made public weren't even a thing regardless of the movies...
Pisses me off big time when that happens...

Convenience of not having to manually rewind, plus bonus features and takes up less room. Unless a show or film was actually designed to be viewed in HD and had meticulous detail in its sets and costumes, it often looks much better on SD video.

One reason video cassettes are likely making a comeback is because there's a lot of content on them that can be bought very cheaply, despite not being as high quality as DVD and Blu-Ray Disc. And then there is content that was only made available on video cassette.
And, like any other physical media, you can watch it over and again with no worries that it will be made unavailable, like what can happen to content on streaming services.
The only worry with video tape is that it will wear out given enough plays.
As for those Disney cassettes selling for hundreds, not likely. Yes, there are listings of those copies at those prices, but most people don't buy them, especially as you can still find copies of those same movies selling for $1.
And, heheheheh... 2:41 I doubt you had much luck actually loading a VHS cassette into a 3/4" U-matic deck.

    • @Gljin40509
      @Gljin40509 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Back in the days of Blockbuster and other video stores,VHS movies were rented hundreds,if not thousands of times and then sold as "pre-Viewed" and I own many of them ....and all these years later they still play fine....don`t believe what the purists tell you.

    • @Watcher3223
      @Watcher3223 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Gljin40509 Uh, dude, I also have rather extensive experience with video cassettes, both Beta and VHS, transferring stuff to digital as well as cleaning and repairing machines.
The biggest concern with previously viewed rentals is less about how much wear and tear they get and more about the condition of the VCRs that were used to play them.
Unfortunately, most people with VCRs back then never bother to have them periodically serviced, only turning them in for repair when they break down, if not just replacing them with new machines.
There can be cassettes where the tape was chewed or eaten up, where the damaged portion of the tape can clog heads with oxide or, worst case, could damage the video heads. There are others where contaminants in the tape path gets picked up by the tape and then transferred over to the other VCR that plays it, requiring a tape path cleaning to address any problems that arise out of that.
And, generally, tape is fairly hardy. But it's still a format requiring physical contact with the tape. Therefore, there is still a wear factor. And usually, tape wear manifests as dropouts in the picture, which will also sound like crackling with AFM sound, whether Beta hi-fi or VHS Hi-Fi.
But, most tapes tend to deteriorate with age and exposure rather than use since most cassettes are not used that frequently.
Also, aging problems may also largely depend on who made the tape.
Tapes from the likes of Maxell, TDK, and Fuji age excellently, with very few problems.
Tapes from any European brand, like BASF, age horribly ... unless it's BASF tape that was imported from South Korea rather than Germany; not outstanding, but not sticky head-clogging trash, either.
Tapes from some brands like Scotch and Sony can be hit and miss. Most of Sony's tape is good, but some are bad, such as Sony's UHG line of cassettes from the mid-late 1980s or any Scotch tape made before 1982.
In fact, there were Scotch Betamax cassettes from the 1970s that was made from slit computer tape. You can tell by checking the tape's color; it will be brown on one side instead of black or dark grey, along with a fairly light grey backcoating. You can't use those today; the moment you try to play it, your heads will be instantly clogged.

DVDs are cheaper to obtain than VHS because DVDs are still being made, while VHS are out of print and increasingly rarer. It's a lot cheaper to buy a series box set on DVD or a season box set than it is to buy each individual episode or someone's collection of individual episodes on home video. If I get VHS it's because I specifically prefer VHS.

@@UnchainedEruption _"DVDs are cheaper to obtain than VHS because DVDs are still being made, while VHS are out of print and increasingly rarer."_
There are many things that are rare but of little worth.
Rarity on its own is not a good indicator of worth because what's the value?
For media, the value is usually the content. A VHS copy of a movie would be of considerable worth if it's the only practical way to see it, including any unique and desirable edits of a movie that isn't available from releases of the title on more modern formats and where there aren't expected to be any future releases thereof.
      ----
_"It's a lot cheaper to buy a series box set on DVD or a season box set than it is to buy each individual episode..."_
That has virtually always been the case regardless of format, where buying a complete set as a whole, if available, costs less than buying all of the pieces individually.
      ----
_"...or someone's collection of individual episodes on home video."_
"Home Video" is a vague term, as that can encompass material on any video format that is used in the home.
However, it is usually the case where a personal collection of content _especially that which has been used_ is cheaper to buy than the same when it's sold at retail as new.

Glad to have found all those Chaplin movies since I'm pretty much a fan of his since over 24 years ago, I thought back then that all those movies were gone for good even though I kept them around all that time, I was still hoping such thing it would happen, it was only that kindda feeling, glad I did...
It's like an old friend you hadn't heard from for decades suddenly return knocking at your front door...
And I'm not a collector, just a very small number that I still have, some of them were birthday presents from my dad when I was a kid, and others were Christmas Presents from my Uncle, but glad I still had those old movies even though the tapes are still pretty old, still worthwhile even after all that time...

DID YOU KNOW that an HD VHS format does exist? it is called D-VHS and its play back is 1080i and it came out in 1997, sadly they got beat out by DVDs at the time, and when blu rays came out in 2006 the format was abandoned...
so 1080i VHS DO exist out there... as to D-VHS VCRs
do with that information as you will, because if they start bringing back VHS tapes. they could bring back DVHS which is a HD "analog/digital" tape

One thing they forgot to mention was the fact that Vhs collecting is becoming more and more popular amongst the young. I can guarantee that as a 13 year old myself. I always find Laserdisc's, Minidisc's, VHS, Betamax, or any format that is "obsolete" to be a part of my hobby. When I was younger, I used to watch videos on youtube from Techmoan or VWestlife dreaming about the day I might get my hands on anything that had my interest. But now that I'm old enough and have money, that dream may as well come true.

I still have VHS tapes, most of them are from my chilhood, as I grew up with the format as DVDS used to cost a bomb when I was growing up , so VHS was the cheaper option. I still watch my childhood tapes as it brings back nastalgia , except the tapes that i would watch until the tape wore out due to it streaching while playing in the VCR and had to be thrown. Compared to some kids nowadays that wont know ehat i'm talking about as DVDS never wore out, they only scratch and tgats the only way to damage a DVD.

@@shaneomacdaddy Blu Ray is not as easily accessible. You first need to buy a separate expensive Blu-Ray player (and still another for 4K Blu Ray) then on top of that you also need to pay for software to decode the Blu Ray format. And the discs themselves are more expensive too. That's why Blu Ray always was and will remain niche. The quality improvement over DVD is negligible and only enthusiasts are willing to fork over more for it. Blu-Rays were niche even before streaming became popular.

I mean streaming in a sense isn't really a good sort of business unless you have a good share of people who like all sorts of movies. For the most part, a lot of people have a very select set of tastes, so if a streaming service doesn't have the movies you like, you are out of luck. In addition to this, some people can go from being absolute movie fanatics to not wanting to watch movies at all. This is why Video Rental Stores should have stayed, because really, who wants to pay $16/month on something that may have only one movie you like and nothing else.

I just bought the entire Star Trek original series on VHS for $11 on an eBay auction. Shipping nearly tripled the cost. This edition was sold by Columbia House beginning in 1987(!) so the tapes are as much as 35+ years old. Image quality loss was surprisingly minimal. The boxes they came in were decrepit, with the inner plastic housing coming unglued from the thick cardboard outer sleeve. And the set was so heavy I had to wheel it around on a cart. Still fun to watch videos dating to back when I bought my first VCR in 1986. I have other VHS tapes...I see them often in thrift stores and at nearly every estate sale. I gave up the format years ago but returned to it... for titles that are either out of print or have never been released on DVD. Prices are typically low, (shipping is high online) though I see prices have increased lately as I hear nostalgia has increased demand. The tapes sure take up more room than a DVD!

Not really know it was said maybe 20 years or 30 but I have a tape from rental copy from 1985 that works perfectly well still. One guy just found a reel to reel of the original CBS broadcast of the moon landing that was still readable.

The greatest sign of respect for something is making a PHYSICAL representation of it. (like VHS tapes)
The main reason why we dont have VHS tapes or physical media anymore is because the QUALITY of todays movies have gone completely down the toilet.
Having digital only media is a sign of hatred and disrespect for the content that the corporations are creating today.
    There are no more classics.
Sometimes they make a good movie but 99.9.9 percent of the time its complete garbage.
AI (artificial intelligence) might change that.
    We will see.

If VHS is going to make a comeback, then studios will have to re-release titles formatted for 16x9 TV's. Currently, VHS tapes are:
    A) Pan and scan (too little info)
    B) Open matte (too much info)
    C) Letterboxed, but only for 4x3 TV's (is windowboxed on a 16x9 TV)

I’ve been recollecting VHS recently and I’ve been enjoying it. Largely the anime tapes from the ADV Films and Pioneer. I also have bootleg anime tapes in my collection acquired by a friend a few years back.

CD's sound better than records, however they don't format pre Plasma era movies for DVD. I don't want to see the top and bottom of a movie removed to fit my 60 inch. Videos used master prints and are printed at a ratio that is pleasing to the eye - it's cinematic. I don't want to watch a 1930's film from the 1960's that is now in the public domain. I'm not allergic to black bars on my TV - just when I go on the prowl.
