The Last Video Store | a documentary on the World's oldest VHS & DVD rental store

  • 20th Century Flicks is the oldest video rental store in the World. It’s small, close-knit crew has unwittingly become custodians of the largest collection of DVDs and VHS tapes in the UK, and faces a constant struggle to adapt and survive in the age of streaming and downloading.
Visit them online, or drop into their store next time you’re in Bristol
    www.20thcenturyflicks.co.uk/
"It’s an ode to the video shop experience and a bygone way of watching movies. With studios like Disney launching their own streaming services and joining industry kingpins such as Netflix and Hulu, we have an almost endless flow of entertainment available at the click of a button. It’s amazing to me that a little independent video store can survive the Netflix cull and even outlive Blockbuster. Drop into the shop next time you’re in Bristol for a dose of movie nostalgia, have a chat about film and go home with a VHS rarity and a bag of popcorn." - Director, Arthur Cauty

"There was just something about these videos
that was so much more seductive.
Even just the cases, like the physical cases
and this tape that you put in,
and this movie would start. "
That statement hit me like a tuning fork. That's exactly how I feel about playing records.

There is a shop called Casey's in Killarney in County Kerry in Ireland which is still renting movies... I'm almost certain that they are around since the early 80's. Great little shop and staff.
The guy is spot on about netflix not even giving you time to process what you just watched before it's counting down to the playing of the next title in 12 seconds.

    • @TemakiTom
      @TemakiTom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That part struck me too! Of all the movies I've watched in my life, the ones I've either rented or owned in physical form are definitely the ones I remember the best. Maybe it has something to do with holding the artifact and looking at the artwork, I'm not sure. But that's definitely the case for me.

You can turn off auto play and stop Netflix if you need time to process what you watched

I have never stopped watching videos and use my VHS player almost as much now as I ever did, so to me videos are a normal and regular part of life. It is so strange watching masses of people all follow along with what society dictates and "evolve" into using new forms of entertainment but then go on about how much they miss videos and whatnot. It is especially strange when you're somebody like me who never stopped watching videos so can't even grasp missing them. People are weird.

People have been brainwashed by advertising that being home alone watching Netflix is better
Everyone is more and more miserable by each passing day because they don't get that human connection
They dont get LIFE EXPERIENCE that will remind them that their life is worth living
I hate tvs with 500 channels
All of these netflix shows are garbage BECAUSE they are a streaming service and not a rent out one
I would give everything to return to the days i went out of my house to rent out a video

%100 spot on , physical stores closing down to be replaced by a online streaming service is actually one of the saddest things I’ve seen , you never ever had a bad weekend because you could get up on a nice cold night , run to blockbuster with a friend or family member , have a laugh & a joke, look around the sections for new & old movies , look at the artwork of the cases & read the back of it , get some snacks etc that’s what life’s about , i feel angry , sad & just at loss at how those days passed us..

Yea I don't like streaming services...
    - Most of the content is super trash. It's like browsing the discount section. Instead of watching ads in TV while watching a movie - resulting in a 30 minute waste of my time - I am now watching 90 minutes of trash. Some content that is just horrible in every way.
    - Some services have dreadful apps and websites. See HBO GO. It's a nightmare.
    - You have to deal with quality issues, I mean even if I pay for the highest Netflix package, I am not able to always force the best quality on my device...
    - You get just a subset of the 'selection'. Like person A gets selection A. I get selection B. Even though I pay the same amount of money (or more at times). That's not cool.
    - You even get just a subset of audio tracks and subtitles. You are not from person B? Too bad, you don't get their voice track.
    - Content comes and goes. You want to watch something but you don't have the time? Well, too bad, it might be gone tomorrow.
Sorry for the tl;dr I know no one has the time to read all this ...
