Yes, i confirm this. Today i found 2 DVDs recorded in 2007 and simply NOT READ, disc clean and not scraches. Many VHS and S-VHS recorded in 1988 loaded and play. Impressive.

Only because u didn't finalise them once u fin recording.. Each rec has its own ident and will not 'normally' play on another machine.. However some exceptions abound. So if u recorded a whole mass of dvds and never finalised them in the host machine, u may have to get another host and finalise them for them to be playable in ANY machine. Downer for me as I had machine after machine breakdown and so have hundreds needing finalising.

Home burned DVDs are nowhere near as stable as commercial DVDs pressed in a factory and a lot of factors like the quality of the blank discs themselves, storage conditions, and the burner used can affect their lifespan

I freaking LOVE collecting VHS movies. It's my favorite hobby. There are any number of subsets, and subsets of subsets, to collect so it only ends when you decide it does, Goodwill sells tapes for 50 cents a pop so you can bring home a nice stack for only a few bucks and unlike video game collecting, the thrill of the hunt is still a big part of the fun. You never know what you'll find. Yesterday, I found a tape with a few episodes of the Real Ghostbusters cartoon (nice bit of nostalgia, that) and came to find out that it was one of only two tapes of that show released in the US, so if you were a fan at the time that was all you had access to until the dvd release decades later. That kind of thing fascinates me.

Another reason why VHS is still great is because let’s say for example Netflix shuts down you won’t have access to those shows from the 80s 90s or early 2000s. A good example of this the karate kid trilogy from the 80s. It was removed from Netflix the only way to watch it is on DVD/VHS

    • @erikamccreary2614
      @erikamccreary2614 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Exactly and also you need internet for Netflix to watch stuff and you also have to pay for it. And what would happen if you had your internet turned off and can"t afford to pay for it. That's why I'm grateful for vhs tapes and DVDs. I've been collecting them like crazy at a theft store that is not far from my house. And I doing the same thing with cds as well.

I still use my hi-fi VHS player to play recordings of my vinyl albums. The vinyl albums get played once (as I record them to high-five VHS), and then they go back in their dust cover, totally protected, and rarely seeing a stylus again. You cannot only fit both sides of an album on one cassette tape, but you can also record multiple albums on one tape.

The D-VHS (Data VHS) VCRs were the pinnacle of VHS. I own three of them and I sometimes transfer 4K Blu-ray discs and Amazon Prime Video to D-VHS at 1080i. It's a step down in quality but it is fun having to rewind them. Storing 22 hours of video on a single D-VHS tape is quite impressive.
As for longevity I have been able to both play and record onto videotapes made in 1976 (V-Cord2 format). I seriously doubt that a DVD-R will still be recordable 47 years after they were manufactured.

I’m still going with DVDs/Blu-Ray though
    1. Better image and sound quality
    2. Typically they’re cheaper
    3. You rewind it an infinite amount of times
    4. They have a waaaay longer lifespan than VHS. I guarantee you a VHS Movie from the mid 80’s looks either A. Terrible image quality or B. Doesn’t work.
VHS is a dead technology that needs to stay dead. There’s a reason why we don’t use it anymore.
Edit: Casette tapes I don’t have a problem with though. I actually love them.

Around the mid-90s, only pro-spec VCRs like the Panasonic AG-1980 did, and by the late 90s, they took adjustable volume levels away for good. No wonder most consumer 4-head Hi-Fi VCRs look so strikingly similar to their monaural counterparts that they're never wanted by audio enthusiasts...

So many Blu-Ray and DVD releases of older films are over-restored, so if you like a grainy, filmic look, VHS is your friend

But only the DVD player can remember where you left off on a DVD as long as it's plugged in. If you put that DVD in another player, the DVD is restarted from the beginning. If you unplug your DVD player, that bookmark is deleted. VHS tapes always remember that bookmark, even if you haven't played them in years, and you can start a tape in one VCR and finish it in another.

Take my Panasonic PV-4780 for example: it has a digital special effects buffer, so when you hit the PAUSE/STILL ⏸️ button, it makes frozen frames and slow-motion look flawless. Did I mention it has fantastic Hi-Fi stereo sound quality? And yes, the picture quality of VHS is generally so-so at best, but the PV-4780's Hi-Tech 4 head makes it look absolutely fantastic!

analogue totally has a place in society - the digitalization is forced. just conglomerate-companies forcing digitalization to fund research on the tech Jeff Bezos and Elon Musks want funded. That tech research never goes into our pockets, bc it's always expensive and made to destroy itself today - literally.
    analogue & digital co-existence
