How I Take Landscape Photos on a Beautiful Island (And Find Something Incredible!)

- In this week's photography tutorial I head to the stunning Holy Island of Lindisfarne in the UK for landscape, seascape and sunset photos. But I was in for a huge surprise when I found something wild that interrupted my photography.
I give my best tips and tricks for landscape photography, including improving my composition with better foreground interest, how I use light and colours and how I use circular polarizers for better skies.
Spoiler alert: It was a seal pup that I found on the harbour. I kept nearby (but not too close) to keep an eye on it and tried to get in touch with various local animal charities who may be able to advise on whether it needed help. And while I wasn't sure whether it was injured or not, it eventually made its way back into the water. I don't know whether this was definitely the right thing to do -- we were concerned it may have had an injured front flipper and that maybe it required care before being released back into the water -- but in the end the seal made the decision for us and we thought it best to just let it do its thing.
You can read more on what to do if you find stranded wildlife on the RSPCA, or whatever local animal charities in your region. However general advice is that unless an animal looks injured or harmed in some way, leave it alone.

I think the B&W version of the castle has much more drama and I also really like the sunset shot of the refuge hut at the the of the film. Well done for putting the seal pups health to the top of your concerns.
Thanks Mark, much appreciated feedback on the black and white. I think that's the one I'm leaning towards too now.
Hi andrew. Enjoyed video on lindisfarne. Looks beautiful but desolate. Best regards from James in Scotland.
Hi James, thanks so much I really appreciate it!
Outright beautiful ❤❤❤ … definitely a place I want to go. Would you mind telling me when you went. Thank you, cheers 😊
Thank you! I was there in early December. So it was quite a while ago when I filmed this! But it's such a beautiful place and you can get great shots any time of year!
B&W of castle is a special image - well done. Post earns “Seal of Approval” - couldn’t resist the pun😊. Cheers!
I always appreciate a good pun! Do you think the black and white version over the colour version? I really can't decide
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography IMO, the contrast in the B&W, including cloud/sky separation is what stands out.
Thanks Paul, I think that's what does it for me, too. It's certainly a more dramatic shot in black and white. I think what's maybe putting me off is that it's the only black and white in the whole series so as a result it feels a bit out of place. Whereas the colour version fits as part of the 'set'. Do you think that makes sense?
Well done with the seal (many brownie points) love the shots of the castle with the boats in the forground, and B&W version of the castle is a great shot with a moody feeling and nice light.
Thanks! The b&w version definitely seems to be the crowd fav!
Many thanks for your video. When I see that, I just want to grab my camera and going outside 😊
Thanks for watching!
That takes me back when I used to make deliveries onto Lindisfarne and the need to watch the time so as not to be stuck there.
It’s a long time ago now too…
There was an episode of Vera done on the island not long ago and is worth the watch 🏴
Yeah I was a bit nervous about missing the crossing time and getting stuck there. It was in mid December so I didn't fancy sitting in my car until the road cleared!
Black and white castle shot for me too. Some beautiful shots thank u for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Great photos from that session
Hi Andrew , really enjoyed your video and great photos 👍
Cheers Stephen, have a great weekend!
Beautiful pics, the video makes me want to go out with the camera
Thank you! I hope you get to soon!
So pleased you stayed with the seal and saw it safely swim out to sea. And some stunning images too!
Thanks!
Fantastic Andrew really enjoyed that especially as I'm going there in September thanks very much for sharing mate
Oh nice! You'll have a great time. It's a beautiful spot. Have you been before?
@AndrewLanxonPhotography No ive not been before so I'm looking forward to it
@colinbrewer6507 oh it'll be great. I hope you have a great time!
The other worthwhile place to visit down the east coast is Bamburgh castle if you’re looking for another worthy subject.
wonderful vid, and some excellent results.
Thank you!
Magnificent!
Nice photos. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Scot! Much appreciated as always!
Wow!
Nice video and great pictures Andrew
Thank you!
Glad to see the seal return to the water 😊 good you looked it up before doing anything
Great video Andrew
Thanks so much for watching!
B&W Castle for me.
Thanks! What is it about the black and white version that you think you prefer?
So beautiful ❤❤❤
Thank you!
great Video!!
Thanks!!
Nice photos 👍
Thanks Tomas!
Wonderful!
Thank you!
Fantastic content and range of shots. I especially like the single point perspective photo of the elevated hut and receeding peers. Also, there is good light and balance between the boat and castle.
Thanks very much! It's an area that lends itself well to a variety of images as there's so much to see and photograph. I'm pleased I hung around as long as I did!
Lovely images Andrew and so good to see a happy ending for the seal pup. Inspiring as ever!
Thank you!
I thought you might have tried to incorporate the fisherman into the shot of the castle: a shoot missed this time around.
I did consider it but unfortunately he was on some steps below the pier I was on so I would have needed to be at water level to get a compelling angle the got both elements in and I didn't fancy that!
Great photos! So glad you took time with the seal!
Thanks so much!
