EPIC Photography on a 4,000 Mile Road Trip (Landscape, Street, Travel and More)

  • In this week's photography video, I drive thousands of miles in a Lotus Eletre EV across Europe to take landscape, street and travel photos. I show how I find compositions, the settings I use for landscape, street and car photography, as well as how I balance the demands of taking images while also having to drive eight hours per day.
    My journey took me from Edinburgh to Barcelona and back and it was a real slog, taking me through busy cities, through dusty desert and along blizzarding, snow-covered mountain roads.
    But despite the difficulties, and the frequently epic rain, I love the range of images I got on the trip. If you're interested in my video specifically on the car, you can check out the video I produced for CNET:

      @@AndrewLanxonPhotography with a generous rate of 2% for keepers I would say 8-10 thousand. Of those 30 to 40% made into the show. Of those 25% were for continuity with the video.

    I took a somewhat similar route from Hollland all the way to South Spain (Puglia) last summer. And I just got back from a roadtrip from Denmark to Iceland and a few stops at the Faroe Islands With the Ferry (Smyril Line).
    I really enjoyed watching your epic Road Trip, that I’m strongly relate to. There’s something special about traveling alone a long way from home, on the hunt for great pictures!

      Woah those sound amazing! I bet you got some great photos. Did you take your car on the ferry to/from Iceland or did you rent when you were out there?

    Yet another brilliant video with some simply stupendous photos. My favourite has to be the vibrant green Lotus in the "yellow" desert.....green and yellow go together soooooo well.

    Wonderful video and your comments on photography vs road trip are so true. My wife and I drove Route 66 in May and I planned almost all of it from a photography perspective BUT with it being a vacation and in a set time period there were only a few locations that could be planned for the best light. The vacation & the drive were the priority (vs the photography.) which meant harsh light in many locations, un-plannable weather, and constant changes to my expectations. Some of the best locations were a surprise as I didn't know they existed but often at non-optimal times of day. There was a wonderful conflict between accidental photography and a slight sense of disappointment (of not being able to stop for a shot I saw from the drivers seat or not being somewhere in better light.)
    Thank you for sharing your road trip and including many of the approaches you took to get the images!

    • @AndrewLanxonPhotography
      @AndrewLanxonPhotography  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for such a thoughtful comment -- you're absolutely spot on. The journey has to be the priority simply in order to complete it, so it does mean that a lot of the images end up being accidental. The desert area I found was one of my favourite spots, but I just happened to see it as I was passing nearby on the highway so turned off to try and explore it. I only had about 45 minutes there because I had to keep going so I shot what I could, took some quick video clips and just hoped I got what I needed. It definitely felt a bit 'accidental' in seeing the area and there will have been loads of amazing places just like it that I drove straight past.
      But I do love that it adds some thrill and drama to the trip and the resulting photos end up telling the whole story of your journey, both the good and the bad, rather than it trying to look like a commercial catalogue. I'd love to do a similar road trip in the US and take in some of those roads and especially going to some of the old roads to the ghost towns.

    Living the life Andrew. I can think of worse jobs.
    I used to work on offshore platforms and chemical plants. I saw a fair bit of the world contracting. It also allowed me to get my hands on some pretty decent camera gear and indulge in a hobby I love. Art was always my favorite subject in school and I was consistently best at it.
    Off photographing wildlife/Butterflies this afternoon at Martin Down, Dorset. I have my lens button on my 840mm(equivalent), 1.2m close focas lens set to focus bracket. Shooting with the tricksy OM-1. Couple days ago I was shooting street in Bournemouth with my Z8. Just love the process of shooting, culling and editing.
    Keep up the good work.

    The green of the Lotus reminds me of the color of Patrick McGoohan's Lotus in the opening sequence of "The Prisoner".
    In order to get 100 keepers, I'd have to take 2500 photos. So my guess, 2500.
    Thanks for sharing this travel vlog. I enjoyed it.

    • @AndrewLanxonPhotography
      @AndrewLanxonPhotography  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much! I suspect the colour has been specifically crafted to replicate those classic 'British Racing Green' tones of older Lotus cars. I think it's called Galloway Green and I really like it.
      Good guess, though you'd need to double it to be closer to the final number! Any favourite shots from the bunch?

    I thoroughly enjoyed this video Andrew. I think you are a very talented person, driving that amazing car across France and making the video, all on your own. It must have been quite challenging to take the car images, finding locations and just keeping it clean. I have followed you for ages and love your photography instruction. I have learnt so much from your content, much more than some of the more popular You Tubers. You deserve many more followers and views IMHO. Thanks so much. Hope you keep on creating content for us for as long as possible. ❤❤❤❤

      Thank you so much, Chris, that's incredibly kind of you to say! It certainly was one of the most difficult videos I've ever put together, but it turned out to be a real labour of love and I was really pleased to see the finished result. I'm so pleased you enjoyed it. Did you have any particular favourite images from this one?

      @@AndrewLanxonPhotography Hi Andrew, I loved man on the rock, the car shot in the desert, the car shot by the old petrol station and the house at night in La Rochelle. I guess you took at least 3,000 shots as you seem to take a lot of burst shots. Off to watch the car video now. Thanks so much. 😍😍😍😍

      @@AndrewLanxonPhotography I do mostly black and white so I always love looking at those. But you have so many good ones so it is hard to choose - But my favorite is the lady standing next to the gates (Time 4:57). I also like minimalistic images like the fisherman with the pigeons and all the empty space (Time 6:12). My favorite landscape is the seascape (Time 19:49). I am not always a huge fan of street photography but I really like your night scenes.

      Thanks buddy, much appreciated! I really enjoyed the street stuff in the city. It's always a great spot for photography. I don't think I overall recommend this sort of road trip for car photography, at least not if you're driving solo - there's very little time to get off the road and actually take photos! Still, a lovely car to do that sort of distance in!
