let's say it! What I prefer about your channel compared to others' is the fact I know you will only speak about a whisky that you own and have tasted at multiple occasions. Samples reviewers are a different breed.
I mean....2 years ago you were right. These days we've had to jump into some sample reviews just due to costs and also we've had the opportunity to really get into some wild samples! We do our best to disclose it though! But do you or do you not want an HP 40 review? We're going to do Springbank 30 as well soon from a sample as well! Gotta do it sometimes!
Great review guys!! This offering is one third first fill and 2 thirds refill sherry butts. Sounds very well balanced and vibrant. Glengoyne is putting out some text book sherried whiskies in my opinion. You guys also done a great job of breaking down the price point. This is a great value!! Thanks for sharing!! Cheers guys!! 🥃
I believe Glengoyne distillery is in the lower Highlands and their dunnage warehouses are across the line in the Lowlands. I love the 21yo but probably about my budget limit.
yea, you're correct regarding location... The 25 is a nice step up from the 21 but the price on the 30 is steep... not Macallan pricing but still a commitment.
Hey, nearly 2 years too late for this video... but comment/question. I've only had the 21 year, once... and a few other younger bottles. And I swear to god, as my witness, there is a very noticeable flavor difference on pouring it right away, and uncorking the bottle and letting it breath for as much as 30 minutes. Have you tried this method? Do you agree the flavor becomes even more smooth after letting it breath for 30 minutes?
Many times. I often take 30-45 minutes to enjoy a dram. Normally with my first pour of the evening. Reviewing whisky I don’t take the time i normally would but when the camera is off, I’m taking awhile.
@@topshelfwhisky I'd love to try the 30 year... but I gotta admit, the fact that the cheaped out on the boxing really bothers me. It's a $1k bottle of Whiskey today... and that price will only go up. You'd expect it to be better than the 25 year or younger...
@@ellerm86 4 months late, but the 25 of this era WAS a cheaper package. So the 25 has an OUTER shell that's cheaper and a NICE inner shell. This one flipped the script. But the outer box is much more expensive. It's a weird choice. The new releases are now MUCH nicer across the line, and they upped the price!
Great review guys! Glengoyne is quality. I kinda overlooked their younger bottles until recently when I grabbed a GG12 over the holidays. What a great bottle for $65🇨🇦...the Oak & Sherry interplay is perfect. Sounds like this 30 yo has the same effect obviously with much more complexity. Seek out a 4th fill Farclas Family Cask >=20 years, there’s magic in those old casks.
I agree with your opinion on 30 yr whisky. The Goyne 30 is probably the best bang for buck, just like the 25 yr if you can find them. They are sure to go up in price as more people realize this. I've owned the Glenfarclas 25 and it did not live up to its age. Yes it was only $135, but I won't be buying a 2nd bottle. Great review.
@@topshelfwhisky Nice! Didn't know they delivered. They have the Longrow 11yr Cab Franc and Hazelburn Oloroso in stock too. Yeah I'll post more links no doubt! You should add your boy Dustin if he likes that sort of stuff ; )
Well people tell me I’m an age statement snob so probably the 30 if the price was the same but I do have two bottles of the 25 and I’ll do a side by side.
I'm not the biggest sherry fan... I'm not tempted to try older sherried whiskies. I actually prefer 12 year old expressions of Glengoyne, GlenDronach, and Macallan to their 18 year old counterparts, which have always disappointed me considering how much I paid. In other comments, I have seen you slagging Glenfarclas 17, 21, and 25, and that's OK because I prefer the 15 anyway, bottled at 46% ABV and packing more flavor... That one is the bargain in my eyes. I'm just glad that the ones that I can afford taste the best to me...
LMAO - When it comes to a box and medallion Glengoyne roll out the carpet! I've only ever had the Glengoyne 21 and it's a distillery I've been meaning to revisit but I was rather thinking of the younger expressions. I think I'm in agreement with Dustin about an upper score with sherried whisky. Some distilleries lend themselves to the sherry style but too much sherry maketh a sherry bomb. I have no doubt that this is a lovely whisky and bravo Dustin for sharing the experience with us but I feel as if there is always a cut off. What was that about Glenfarclas? A little louder please. Actually, Glenfarclas have always been a bit problematic for me as well and I've never bought their 21 or 25 year old even though they are good value (or are they - 43%)? Recently picked up a German market only 23 year bottled at 46% just shy of £100 though which scored 89 by Angus at Whiskyfun. Cheers guys.
Welsh! How you been? We did a side by side with the 21/25/30. Well more of a side by side by side. The 21 had a really nice finish but the 25 and 30 were a nice step up for the nose and palate... if you email me your address I’ll send you a sample of the 25.
@@topshelfwhisky That's extremely kind of you Mike. Thank you. How can I get your email so we can chat? A few Tuber friends have my details - Swami, Quig, Roy, Vin and Erik. Cheers
After watching this excellent review, I guess I will stick to Glengoyne 25 years and at this price point go for Highland Park 25 year. My Glengoyne 25 bottle is completely different from what I’ve seen in the website and other reviewers from Scotland so I think they used different bottle for US market.
I've noticed some differences with the packaging for the US in regards to the Glengoyne 25 so it might be a different batch as well. The HP25 is one of my favorites but I've noticed a slip in it's quality as well, even comparing 45.7% bottings. If you can find he older 48.1% i would suggest that one. Cheers
Popped open my 30yr last night...very fruity and ORANGE forward on the palate. Was not really expecting that from the oloroso maturation. Had to do a side by side with the 25yr and I must say if you prefer the darker sherry notes (dark fruits/chocolate/baking spices) then the 25yr old would be the one for you. Let’s see what happens as the fill level goes down on the 30yr old.
I agree with the 25 vs 30. I have a couple bottles of the 25 and to me it's similar to the difference between Glendronach 18 vs 21, meaning the younger whisky has more dark sherry notes. The 30 opens up quite a bit after a week or two. Let me know how it changes.
This is out of my league, unfortunately. Still it's good to hear that GG25 is close to this 30yo in terms of quality. I have some 30yo brandies (not scotch), and that is like a poetry in the bottle. Quality destillate, good casks and controlled maturation = art. Enjoy!
GG25 and 30 are both great whiskies IMO. The younger offerings from the distillery are decent value for the money but I prefer Glendronach 12/15/18/21 over the same age stated offerings from Glengoyne.
Tried this wonderful 30 year old at the Hamburg Whisky Fair a week ago and was bowled over! What an intense, yet superbly balanced whisky. Many thanks, lads, for your thoughts and comments and tasting notes! Cheers.
