Wacky and Neko Rigging Bass 101 [When and Where]

  • Mike “Ike” Iaconelli relies on both wacky and Neko rigging finesse plastics to get bit - they're arguably the most effective bass rigs for generating bites for anglers of all skill levels and produce even when fish are in a negative mood. Iaconelli shows us how to rig each, the differences between the rigs and when to fish them.

    -Sufix Invisiline Castable Fluorocarbon, 6-10lb: wired2.fish/SufixFluorocarbon
    Both techniques make heavy use of stick worms and other thin plastics but the similarities end there. Ike favors the use of a weightless wacky worm when targeting bass in shallow areas with little depth change (think grass or gravel flats). He fishes the weightless wacky rig suspended and horizontally, allowing him to cover water more efficiently when searching for fish. Ike demonstrates his typical wacky rigging process, emphasizing the importance of o-ring positioning and hook placement.
    In contrast, the Neko rig excels around areas of rapid vertical change such as steep drop-offs, seawalls, or adjacent to vertical cover such as standing trees, grass, and dock and bridge pilings. The position of the o-ring and the addition of a nail weight radically change up the action of the Neko rig, essentially making it a vertical presentation to be fished along the bottom instead of suspended in the water column like a wacky rig.
    Both are finesse presentations that fish best on spinning tackle. Iaconelli shares preferred rod action and line specifics, and why he favors a braid and fluorocarbon combination over other line options.

    Wow, this was a fantastic video! Excellent information. I've tried the neko, but never really known when it was optimal to choose it over the wacky. I also wondered if it would be more effective to point the hook toward the tail on the neko, rather than the head as you did. It looks backwards that way. I like doing the double o-ring trick where you cross them over, allowing the hook to sit perpendicular to the bait rather than inline with it.

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you Nathan Cross. Ike did a great job of clarifying where each technique shines and it makes you think more about the types of places you fish them. The question of hook placement is a good one. The standard, as you mentioned, is having the hook point face the tail. Ike has his reasons and prefers to hook it the opposite. Perhaps this is based on the theory that predator fish take prey head first or that fish spin food in their mouth to aid in digestion. So if a fish does attempt to eat a Neko rig head first, the hook is in a favorable position. One thing about a Neko hook though, is that the hooking percentage is high no matter how you fish it!

    Why is your hook backwards on the neko rig?

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, the standard rigging procedure calls for the hook point to be facing towards the tail. Yet, there are some reasons and some Pros that make the argument for "backwards" a good one. We will be exploring this topic and will report the findings. Stay tuned-

    • @Andrink10
      @Andrink10 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Wired2Fish When bass bite, they bite the head of baits usually. I think that is one of the reasons why the hook is backwards, so if the bass picks up the bait from the head the hook faces the correct direction for a solid hook-set. I've tried it before and I find that it also causes the bait to slide backwards more when it drops, so after a jerk the bait could slide back in the opposite direction. With this hooking style you have a more erratic motion.

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The tendency for fish to take prey headfirst is the most logical explanation we have found for hooking it this way as well.
      We will be taking a look at a few of the other properties of hooking the rig "backwards". Yet we are not convinced there is a right and wrong way to rig it. Perhaps each way has its set of strengths.
      Excellent observation and we appreciate the feedback @HK Lure Angler.

    • @bubbafarmer4867
      @bubbafarmer4867 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul Yang I thought the same as I watched the rigging process, but judging by the way the worm and hook were positioned in fish it appears to have been changed to facing up. I’d love to hear Ike’s take...

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Paul Yang, typically the hook would face up and the point would aim towards the tail. Ike however, has his reasons for rigging it opposite. Keep an eye out for a W2F investigation.
      Thanks for the comment!

    • @paulyang8276
      @paulyang8276 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wired2Fish
      It just seems to be counterintuitive to have the hook face down, hence more proned to getting snagged when ripping through cover.

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We agree it makes a lot of sense that the shank of the hook acts as a weed guard but still, the hook may have a tendency to always want to run shank first in the direction it's pulled. The difference being the tail of the plastic may be taking that initial contact with cover or weeds. Rigging the hook head first coincides with the theory that predatory fish take prey in a head-first manner. Where in that case, the hook is more quickly exposed. And as Ike says, he fishes this bait more in verticle cover with less horizontal movement and more of a "peck" in place.

    • @williamvaughan5340
      @williamvaughan5340 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have tried putting the hook in both positions and I find I have a much better hookup ratio when I have the hook point toward the plastic vs. how Ike had it rigged. Still a great video.

      It is highly recommended that you use an O ring to keep from losing plastics after every missed hookset and fish catch.
      The O ring is there to take the brunt of the ripping force and prevent the plastic from tearing off.
