Sandy ---- you make me smile. I watch all your videos. I love the radio ones and like
the rough camping vid's too. My ancestors came from your neck of the woods in 1635. I wish I was able to go camping and operate qrp with you but I have messed around and gotten to old. 73, n5gkv

One would think a 20 minute video talking about and watching a bloke shave would be boring. Boring it is not. You have a unique way of making any topic entertaining and interesting. Really enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing. Dave

Hello Sir, I would like to introduce myself, I am George Painter from the USA and I have a wet shaving channel. I found you from watching Paul, you are right, he is a true gentleman and his videos helped me through a serious illness and has become a great friend. It was an honor to watch your first DE shave, I truly enjoyed it an appreciate you sharing it with us. If it would be ok with you I would like to share this video with my Facebook brothers, Gold dollar shave club. We are a group of men who are wet shaving hobbiest and share the love of shaving and I know they would enjoy this as much as I did. Thank you again Sir,
    All the best to you,
    George

I remember my granddad showing me how to shave with his razor just like that Sandy, brought back some real good memories, you had to work a lather up on the hard shaving soap. I still have his glass bottle of 'old spice' in my bathroom cabinet, I never use the stuff but its always there as a reminder. Pleasure to watch.

Dear Sandy, thankyou so much for posting this video. It brings back very many happy memories (and provoked a few tears, lol!) of watching my father shave when I was a little girl. He passed when I was 15 and I will always miss those close moments with him. The noise of the razor, the smell of the shaving soap, the expletives when he cut himself! He was in the Royal navy for 12 years and so shaving was a daily thing for him, even after retirement. The only time I knew him to not shave was when he had two voyages up into the Arctic circle. He used to say that the Royal Navy was the only service that allowed men to grow full beards (a full set he always called it) I don't know if this is still the case. Anyways, congratulations on finding a way to pamper yourself a little! We all deserve some, now and then! Much love, Ales xx

      aleswitch Hi Ales,
Hope you are well. Glad this bought back such nice memories for you. You were too young to lose your dad. I was 25 when my dear old Dad died. That was back in 1988 but I can remember him like it was just yesterday.
      Take care

When I was 16 I dug out my dad's old army issue razor from 1942, bought some blades and gave it a go.
The following day I bought myself a Philishave.
Though you do inspire me to give it another chance.

Fantastic video Sandy, you've inspired me to think about looking further into this kind of shaving. Looks like a luxurious pampering experience that you can enjoy for years to come. I'm so glad Paul sent you these items, you deserve the best in life :)

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rick,
The future is DE shaving for me from now on. It;s not cheap to start off though. The brush alone is worth over 50 quid! But once you have bought all the kit it will last for years. Paul says £15 of razor blades will last a couple of years so in the long term you could save money. But it's worth trying this for the expereince alone.
      Take care
      Sandy

brilliant to see sandy, very refreshing to see someone bucking the trend of the sheep following fury face growers lol.
cant beat a close shave mate.
    a true gentleman :)
when i was a reserve soldier no one dared grow a beard for fear of a proper beating (respirators dont seal on beards and let gas in).
i use my hair clippers on #0 to keep my stubble down a bit once a week.
ill probably wet shave once every 2 or 3 weeks, or if im going out out lol.
i got a badger hair brush a few years back but still use a mach 3 razor, after watching this im tempted to look at some razors the same as this.
paul is a bloody nice bloke for posting all this to you.
    have a nice weekend mate

I have my late fathers D.E. razor which I have used for 34 years. They are great value as if you flip the blades you get 4 shaved at least. I am wrapping it up for Christmas as a present to my 14 year old boy. Keep the tradition going. That's what you get when you buy quality. Lasts many lifetimes. Keep safe and look after Mandy and the family.

Hi Sandy, used these years ago for a long time I think they were called the first safety razors at the time, as I remember some models used to open a split in the middle of the top plate when twisting the handle so you could drop the blade in from the top and the brush, well we used to use any old bar of soap that was handy! mmm think I am getting old lol

I felt every stroke. What a close shave. I remember playing around with my granddads shaver which looked very similar but a gold chrome plate. I use the cheap throw away ones and sometime only with soap. Bit of a cheap skate to be honest but I do agree it's nice to pamper ones self now and again. A great enjoyable video Sandy. Might upgrade the shaving to the next level. Great guy that Paul for sending you the gifts. Take care. Nick.

I cant believe i have just spent 15 mins watching a man shave :-) more surprising than that i found it very inspiring, when my granddad died who i was very close to i could not dispose of his razor which is similar to yours however its brass, i still have blades and all accessories too. I remember as a small boy how he would teach me to shave using the afore mentioned razor and it is an item that brings memories of him flooding back. I am hoping the blades will be ok as they are at least 20 yrs old. The razor itself was around at my earliest memory and im just approaching 50. Thank you for the vid sandy im off for a shave. All the best my friend. Shaun

Really nice to see someone bring you as much joy as one must feel after receiving one of your knives! :)This video brought
me back many years, as I would love to watch my Grandfather who visited us from Germany every summer who shaved just
that way. He had a soft boars head bristle brush & he'd use one of my mother's coffee mugs to overflow with the cream...
I found it so relaxing to watch, as I did your video, Sandy. As a new subscriber, just wanted to thank you for the bit

Hi, you've really gone upmarket with excellent kit to boot. My field/travel kit consists of a Gillette 3 piece razor, Wilkinson sword double edge blades, Palmolive shave stick which fits inside a Wesco/BCB camouflage stick tube, British army heliograph signalling mirror dated 1945, a small shaving brush, styptic pencil, flannel and soap bar packed inside a Dutch army dpm camouflage wash bag which has served me well for over 30 years. I last used it just days ago in hospital having a knee replacement.

Nice - welcome to the wet shave. I have historically used gel and a Gillette fusion but started with DE razor. I have a nice real badger brush, DE razor, soap dish and it all fits on a stand -. First pass top to bottom, left side face one edge then right side the other, then ear to nose/midline again with one edge on alt sides, then nose/midline to ear - then finally feel for any stragglers.

Hi Sandy, now you're as smooth as as a babies bottom! My husband used to have a razor like that but he gave it up in favor of the disposables. He has bumps on his face and every day he would have nicks all over. The sink would look like a crime scene. He would tear off bits of toilet paper and stick them to the nicks. As a young bride I used to like to watch him shave, even despite of all the bloodletting! ATB, Lisa

What a good laugh I had watching a shaving virgin! (well, almost).
When I started shaving with my Dad's old cast-off razor they all looked like that, though not of that quality, and there was simply no other method unless you used one of the new-fangled electric shavers that sounded like a helicopter.
Only rich people changed their blade every time though.
You must have a face like a baby's bottom now - no need to shave for a month.

Been wet shaving for about 7 years now. Got a 1959 Gillette double edged razor on eBay. You don't need to change the razor every shave. Should be able to get a few shaves out of each one. I usually go with the grain of the hair on the first pass, then against the grain on the second pass. I used to do a middle pass crosswise with the grain. Enjoy!

My namesake Great-Grandfather was a barber and shaved with a straight razor, keeping it sharp with a sandstone, and keeping an edge with a strop. My Grandfather and Father both used a straight razor until the Gillette double edge razor, similar to your new razor, came available. I began shaving, even though I didn't need to shave, while serving in the U.S. Navy. About 1974 I abandoned the Gillette for the Norelco electric rotary razor. I've owned 2 Norelco electrics both becoming candidates for the garbage dump over 35 years. I now use the use a couple times and throw away razor. I stopped using the barber's soap in a cup and application brush over 10 years ago and dry shave every couple days when I'm not growing a beard (mostly during winter/cold months). I have retired and no longer required to have a clean shaven face. I have used the down, across, and up strokes for shaving since the mid 1960's but I've never seen the application of shaving cream applied between the different strokes. I've lathered once and stroked then rinsed. Occasionally, I will treat my face to a warm wash cloth after the shave for a few minutes.

Nothing like a proper shave bro... Looking good... I do this every week with the addition of the Optrex Eye wide blue eye drops... I have brown eyes myself but find that the blue stuff works better to lighten the whites and bring out the openness of the eye... I also bang on some Vaseline intensive care lotion before going off for a 7K hire with my lad. Not a puffy fella by any stretch mate but you will find you look 10 years younger and feel it too. good on you pal.

I use an Edwin Jagger razor with Feather blades and it's superb! If you clean the blades by wiping them on a towel after each shave, you will get quite a few uses out of each blade. YMMV and Feather blades last longer than some others (they're sharper than most too).

Have always used this type of razor. Tip -strop the blade. After rinseing before putting it away, push the blade down a towel both edges. Turn the blade over, repeat. Keeps soap and water drying on the blade egde. Doubles the life of each blade.

Sandy. I reckon you should make a ‘one off’ Jacklore Japanese type straight razor. You could send it to Paul as a challenge to shave with it. They’re an uncommon type so he might not have tried with one. It would be a great challenge for you as well. A thin hard blade honed to an extremely sharp edge.

The thing about going over in different directions is that if the hairs grow flat to the skin like they do on my neck it can cause in growing hairs and rash/spots if you go against the grain.
I always shave just with the grain now even though it's not super smooth and I don't have so many problems. I used to get horrendous neck rash and spots before this!
Not so much a problem if your beard grows straight out.

Sandy, Did you say that was a Rolls Royce razor or Edwin Jagger? I grew up with those double edge razors. For years I used one I got from cheapo I got from the government, with good blades-Wilkinson you could get a good shave. With proper preparation the blades lasted 4-5 shaves. Probably went through a half dozen since 1965. About 20 years agouti got hard to get double edge blade sand new razors. Everything suddenly went to disposable heads and they get pricey. On my second of that type of razor. I think these heads have 4 blades. I get 5-6 shaves, but at a cost. Would've to get good affordable double edge razor. I've seen the high end chic chic razors. I shave every 3-5 days or at times I wait two years!LOL

You're really lucky Paul gave you an Edwin Jagger, the absolute best beginner razor of any in my opinion. Having used Merkur and Edwin Jagger, I absolutely have to say that Edwin Jagger gives a far superior shave to the classic Merkur shave head. Many people claim they give the same performance, but they aren't even in the same ball park.

i have a sharpening stone especially constructed to resharpen those double sided disposable blades. I can make a plastic disposable razor last for over a week before it starts to dull. Clean the packed hair out and sotre upright in a water glass next to the sink. Water causes rust and dull blades. I remember basic training. lots of kids who had never shaved before were required to shave every day mo matter what. One sadist told this kid with acne. oh just plow thru it and shave them smooth. they will flatten out. He bled like a stuck pig for almost a whole day. Kid learned how to shave and sadist learned how to do pushups the right way.

Bit different from your usual videos but enjoyable all the same. I must admit I used to use one of those razors years ago and I always cut myself. I think in hindsight I used to put too much pressure on the razor. Also I have a few bumps in my skin, a few blemishes, and it seemed I was planning them off every time I used that type of razor. I use the 3-pass method too but with a Gillette Mach 3 in order to spare myself the bloodletting. You've obviously a lighter touch than I had!
