  • Hi! My name is James Koorey. Today I will give you a step-by-step tutorial on how to repair a 2005 Honda Odyssey minivan sliding door middle roller.
I bought the roller from the Honda dealership for under $50 and spent 30 minutes repairing it.
Don't be afraid to do this yourself with some basic hand tools.

    Super helpful--thanks for the video!
I would suggest anyone doing this to quickly disconnect the negative battery terminal after you get the door in the right position, but before you attach the cables to the new roller. I watched in horror as the motor somehow got activated as I was trying to attach the cable to the roller, and it reeled the cable in, which meant needing to tear apart the inside to get the door roller motor, turning this 20 minutes project into a multi-hour one. I disconnected the battery for the second door, followed the video, and it took literally 18 minutes start to finish.

Just did this fix today! Not so bad after all. Pointers for those doing the fix:
    * Open the door about 6 inches, and then turn the door power off. This is far enough to get at the mechanism. With the power off, you can easily move the trolley later.
    * I used the box from Amazon to cushion the door an a floor jack. worked fine.
    * Remove the slider cover,
    * after removing the E-Clip, use a iron rod to extend the hammer's reach and you can easily tap the pin out without removing the fixed part of the mechanism from the door, thereby not messing with the door's slignment and saving a great deal of hassle.
    * After removing the pin, slide the trolley towards the rear of the vehicle (no power needed, you turned that off), about halfway down the track is the best place to remove and re-apply the cable ends.
    * Before replacing the trolley in the rail, tie a piece of string to hold the spring compressed, you can cut this away later, but it makes it much easier to get the pin back in.
    * Use the iron rod to extend the hammer's reach to seat the pin again.
    * With the door is mostly closed, the track cover is easier to remove and replace.

I just wanted to say thank you for such an excellently prepared and narrated video. I replaced this part on both of my slider doors yesterday. Because of your instruction, the entire job took me about an hour to finish both doors. I am especially grateful for the explanation of the real amount of time this job took you. It gave me the confidence to try this on a Sunday afternoon. Each one of these would have been a thousand dollar repair at the dealership. Your instruction just saved me $2,000. Thank you.

My wife gave me an ultimatum to fix the sliding door on her '08 Odyssey and this video was extremely helpful. The steps were laid out so nicely in the video that for brownie points I went ahead and replaced the other side and promptly told her about my pro-activity. Thanks again for posting!

Thank you! Still helping people in 2022. The door on our 2010 Odyssey wouldn’t work on hills, and we live on a hill, so the kids all had to climb out on the other side. My husband and I bought the parts and did this repair on both doors in about an hour and we are back in business!

Follow up to my previous comment - watched this video once, ordered the part, then watched it again and performed the steps with you once the roller arrived. Super straight forward. Thanks so much for putting this together. My one comment to anyone else...the cover part that he pulls off with the window down...it slides forward towards the front of the car, then off. I tried to just pull mine off and ended up cutting my hand. Slide forward, then off.

Thanks for the video!! I did the driver side yesterday on our 2010. I wish all my auto repairs went as smooth. I marked the location of the plate that mounts to the door for re-alignment after bolting it back on to make it easy. There were two recesses facing to the rear of the vehicle on the bracket that bolts to the door so I grabbed a Sharpie and put "dots" where the recess edges touched the door, one more mark for centering I put on the top side (on the door and the bracket); that was plenty to get my alignment perfect!
ONE YEAR later (04/21/18) and replacing the other door roller! Thanks again for excellent video!

James: Thanks for posting this. I did the replacement this weekend and it only took about 30 minutes. Great detail in your video! 3 pointers: (1) if ordering the door parts from Amazon - make sure that they are the parts for the automatic doors and not the manual doors. The first order I placed never specified a difference and they sent the manual door rollers. Had to do an exchange. (2) Be cautious when removing the retaining ring from the pint that holds the clamp to the rollers. Mine popped off and went flying thru the air. Landed about 5 feet away and spent a few minutes searching for it. (3) Have patience. The only struggle was getting the pin/cable back into place. Took more than a few attempts but it finally worked. Overall - very simple process.

Alright guys ;) Just did both of mine, video definitely help me and thank you a lot, I saw the video of some guy tearing apart his entire van and thought to myself there's no way I need to do all of this.. I was able to get both doors done in 45 minutes together but I didn't unbolt them I simply knocked out that center pin and it went easy as pie.
For anyone wondering I put a crowbar upside down on the center pin after I remove the lock clip and hammered the Crowbar to pop the pin out the bottom.
    Alright guys... im out...lol

I actually took my panel off thinking it just needed a good cleaning. When I popped it off one of the broken roller pins just came apart. So door was hanging by one roller. Thank God I found this video and was able to repair it same day because I couldn't close the door until I did. I have been dealing with this for years because every video I had seen went to extremes to repair it like you said taking half the car apart. So we just let it ride. This fix cost $44.95 for each side and took no time. So thank you for posting. Looks like you pissed off 84 for repairmen who would probably charge me $1000.00. Great job

Thank you for this! I wish everyone I spoke to that know something about this issue didn't tell me it was expensive and hard to do... been putting it off and letting the door rock a bit because it still opened. But yesterday mine fell off the track in a lowes parking lot. Got it back together but only after denting and scratching the side of my van... this is super simple and I'm grateful for this video showing how to do it!

    • @stevenbeckhamvideo
      @stevenbeckhamvideo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Same here. I put it off because the door still kind of worked and then eventually it fell off in a church parking lot and put some nice gashes all over the side of the van. I have extremely limited mechanical experience but this wasn’t terribly hard. My one holdup after watching this is that the replacement part appears to be for the wrong side.

Great video - thanks for all the guidance, help & tips!! I completed the repair & couldn't have done it without your video & the below supporting comments. The cardboard scraps really help protect the paint. I used a hydraulic floor jack to support the door since the pin was a bit difficult to remove - I had to unbolt the bracket from the door. I traced the bracket location on the door with a silver sharpie for alignment reference. I purchased the Genuine Honda 72561-SHJ-A21 roller assembly (left) on amazon.

1 spent about 15 minutes pulling and pushing and swearing at the door (it was really stuck) until I shot some WD-40 on the rollers, then first pull it opened.
2 the aftermarket replacement part I bought had bushings that had to be drilled out before they would accept the hinge pin. Totally not part of the plan, maybe the OEM one would have been better.

Door did fall significantly when I undid the bolts. Also assembling door back on required several attempts bc i would hear a bump at the end where it was not aligning perfectly. Had to lift it up more and eventually got it right. love it.

Thanks for putting this together. With some careful tapping, and a large nail-setter, I managed to remove the pin without unbolting the mechanism. This made realignment a non-issue on reassembly. Just be careful to shield the glass and paint from your hammer. Perform at your own risk! Hope this saves you 20 minutes.

Thanks so much! I tried to do what everyone is saying and leave the door bracket attached and just hit the pin out, but my pin was all but rusted in place (2005 model), so I definitely had to remove it and bang it out with a hammer pretty aggressively. It was not hard at all to reattach the bracket. **I will add that it is important to make sure that both ends of the spring are on the inside of the bracket. I already had it up in the track and was about to reattach the door when I realized the spring was not creating any tension. I checked it and realized I had one end of the spring poking through the elbow of the hinge. Had to take it off the track and redo it. Small oversight on my part, but all in all it still wasn't too crazy of a repair. ALSO, my 2005 has a washer on the inside of the upper bracket hole. It looks like the replacement part has a built in ring that replaces the need for the washer. I jammed mine in there thinking it was necessary, but then after looking at a photo I took of the old and new parts side by side, I realized it probably wasn't necessary to have that washer in the lineup with the new roller. Any way you skin it, this video helped save us tons of $$. Thanks!

James...thanks..Had the door up and running in no time. I like the "whoop whoop" sound effect. Took my door bracket off to find both rollers completely gone! To help re-attach the bracket I traced (outlined) the original bracket with a marker. Be careful to make sure cable ends are completely seated in bracket.

Thanks for the video! Between it and the comments, I'm gonna have no problems fixing my 2006 model. Both doors doing the same thing. MANY THANKS!

Thanks for the video! The closer you keep the roller assembly to the car the easier it will be to remove/install the cable ends. I missed the tip about pushing the hinge pin and not unbolting it from the door, but it's not hard to realign. If you switch the doors to manual, you can easily push the cable/rollers around.

Wow.. this video came in very usefull! I used the jack from my spare as leverage & also bought the part from Honda. Not expensive at all though it would have if I have taken it to a mechanic for service plus the waiting time. Especially on a Saturday SMH... The job took less than 30 min and it was done on a supermarket parking lot 😊 Thanks again for this video!

Thank you very much for this video it's the last day of April 2022 and I was able to do both doors today on my 2006 Odyssey. This video is still helping people years later! The first door took me just under an hour and that was largely due to a hiccup where the door fell off the bucket and out of the top track so I had to put it back into that track and prop it back up but it took about 10 or 15 to do that no problem. I took a break after finishing door number one and then the second door took me literally 20 minutes now that I had experience! The only slight error I think I may have made is on one of the doors I put the pin back upside down my dad mentioned that this might mean that the door weight may now be resting on the c-clip when the door is open rather than the head of the pin. However I'm not sure if this is a big concern and worth switching or not overall I think it will be fine. Anyway both doors are working and I'm very pleased this video saved me $500 at the Honda dealer especially as I was able to order the parts from a third party website as well.

thanks you the help, worked perfectly. Did both doors on a 2010, both doors missing one grommet totally. Hardest part getting one of the pins out of the hinge. Thanks again.

Awesome video! Replaced both rollers this weekend. One bit of advice- turn off the doors when reattaching just in case you grab the door handle when aligning the door.

Hey man, this is great! I watched your video and made this repair in less than an hour. Only thing I did differently was use a skateboard and small boards for the door support so it would glide easily as needed. But everything worked out great.
